Eternal optimist Verizon calls iPad launch ‘an opportunity’ to sell some data plans
That’s the “glass is half full” attitude we like, Verizon — always looking for a way to sign a few more of those lucrative data contracts, no matter the circumstances! Turns out Big Red is tipping off its staffers on how it can encourage customers to go with the WiFi-only version of the iPad and pair it up with a device like the MiFi rather than shelling out $130 more for integrated AT&T 3G and waiting a few extra weeks. As usual, Verizon’s keen on playing up the anti-AT&T sentiment it’s cultivated in its recent ad campaign by openly calling its biggest competitor’s 3G network “overloaded,” but we see one big hangup: 5GB of data on a Verizon MiFi is going to run you $60 a month, twice as much as AT&T will be charging for its dedicated, unlimited iPad plan. Then again, AT&T’s own boss thinks WiFi’s a bigger deal than 3G for this thing, so who knows — maybe this is a zero-sum game for both of these guys.

Motorola Devour review
While Motorola’s vanilla-Android Droid has become the most recognizable Android device on the market — thanks in part to a bombastic ad campaign — Motorola’s primary focus has been on its own custom Blur UI. At least, if quantity of devices are any indication. Hitting Verizon just as the Blur-powered Backflip heads to AT&T, the new Motorola Devour is an odd cross section of the “consumery” Backflip and Cliq, and the high-end Droid slider. We’ve been playing with the phone for a week or so (you can find our initial hands-on, video walkthrough and unboxing here), so follow us after the break as we walk through the triumphs and tragedy that is this device.

NFL Mobile comes to Verizon with livestreaming RedZone channel
We’d heard that the NFL would be bringing the RedZone channel to phones this season, and it looks like Verizon’s scored the first big partnership: NFL Mobile will launch on Big Red next month with the draft, complete with live streaming video of the event, on-demand video analysis from NFL Network, a pick-by-pick draft tracker, and other content. Once the season starts, customers will get RedZone, live streams of Sunday night and Thursday night games, on-demand video highlights and analysis, live home and away radio broadcasts, fantasy info, and the usual nasty ringtones and graphics. That’s a ton of content, and it certainly makes Sprint’s NFL package seem a little light in comparison — we’ll have to see what pricing is like and what devices this’ll run on closer to launch, however. Bring on the draft!

Verizon plays the obvious card: its 4G trials are faster than 3G
As the clock ticks down on Verizon’s opening salvo of commercial LTE availability, PR noise is growing into a dull roar — not to say we necessarily mind, considering how desperately we’re looking forward to more 4G footprint in the States. Today, the company is reporting that engineers have managed to coax up to 40-50Mbps down and 20-25Mbps up out of its test networks currently deployed in Boston and Seattle — not what we can expect in a real-world environment where you’re on a train surrounded by obstacles and other people trying to use the network, but a pretty nice, round set of numbers nonetheless. In actual usage, they’re reporting more down-to-Earth figures of 5-12Mbps down (count on 5) and 2-5Mbps up (count on 2), which still bests EV-DO Rev. A by a healthy margin. Of course, this is just the beginning — LTE will get better over time — so this sounds like a nice start.

How would you change Palm’s Pre Plus and Pixi Plus?
We aren’t trying to lump these two together or anything, but we figured we’d give those of you who opted for Palm’s second set of webOS handsets an opportunity to pool your thoughts in order to make the smartphone landscape an even better place to survey. We personally didn’t find too much new to laud on Verizon’s Palm-branded twofer compared to the original Pre and Pixi, and those of you who were hoping for all new hardware from the company at CES were undoubtedly let down. Still, there’s something to be said about a webOS product on America’s “largest 3G network,” and frankly, we’re interested in hearing how you’d change things. Would you have overhauled things more drastically? Expanded the screen size? Bumped the resolution? Enlarged the keys? Go on and tell Jon exactly what you think in comments below — who knows, the Pre Plus Plus might just carry your calling card.

Leak: Microsoft Pink phones coming to Verizon, on shelves April 20th?
Details on Microsoft’s Pink phones seem to be leaking all over the place this week, and we just got a huge piece of the puzzle: an extremely reliable source just told us the two Sharp-made devices will launch exclusively on Verizon, with a possible street date of April 20th. We’ve also got two more photos of the Pure and Turtle — which are legit, as far as we can tell — and some info on the Pink ad campaign, which will indeed be targeted at teens and twentysomethings and centered around that “truly madly deeply” line Microsoft employees have been tossing around lately. (Sort of explains that 4/20 launch date, right?) Whether any of this is good enough to overcome the fact that Pink seems to be a limited featurephone platform launching into a world of cheap smartphones remains to be seen, but this thing is definitely happening. New pic of the Turtle after the break.
Update: We’ve just heard that Pink will be coming to Vodafone internationally as well — which explains why we’ve heard of both CDMA and GSM variants of the two devices.

AT&T moves toward eco-friendly packaging, earns our approbation
Notice to all gadget makers and vendors: if you reduce your packaging and engage in environmentally conscious behavior, you’ll get free press out of it and positive brand awareness to boot. Take for example AT&T’s newly announced design specifications for its own-brand phone accessories and packaging requirements for cellphone makers. Both are geared toward minimizing the surplus of paper and plastic that tends to come with the purchase of your device, and both will require the use of recycled and recyclable materials. AT&T expects to save 200 tons of excess materials by the end of 2010, which is very encouraging, but also disturbing in that it lets us know we were wasting 200 tons each year that could, presumably, have been saved by some sager planning. Anyway, better late than never — and guess what, it will probably end up costing the company less than those inane advert attacks on Verizon.

Verizon’s HTC Incredible spotted again, looking as red-accented as ever
We’re missing that crazy contoured back this time around, but otherwise, HTC’s so-called Incredible for Verizon is looking as real and ready for action as it ever has in these latest shots leaked over at Phandroid. It’s hard to say whether these crimson bits are going to make it to production — they seem a little too spectacular for a high-end device that Verizon will want to appeal to the masses, but then again, red is Verizon’s color, so who knows? We’ve seen from countless prototypes in the past (Moto’s Morrison comes immediately to mind) that they’re often given special colors, presumably to identify bandits trying to expose them as anonymously as possible — and we’re tentatively going to say we dig it here. AT&T’s gone wacky on us in the past, but is Verizon hip enough to ship a phone this edgy? Release rumors span from March to May at this point, so we’ll know within the next couple months what’s what.

Project Pink QWERTY slider ‘Pure’ found in the wild, headed for Verizon?
There’s a lot of rumbling in Project Pink land today, as Microsoft is seemingly nearing that magical time where its much-leaked Sidekick followup can finally see the light of day. First off, we’re hearing from a tipster that the phones (we’ve seen ‘Turtle’ and ‘Pure’ so far) will be exclusive to Verizon, at least at the outset — makes sense, given the CDMA radios we saw at the FCC. He calls the UI “hectic and colorful,” and also says that there’s still some serious cloud backup reliance, along with some desktop software to sync up with the cloud as well, and data plans that including a certain quantity of app downloads a month.
This is all fine and exciting, but it’s helped along by a couple of image leaks. Conflipper, well known among the xda-dev crowd, is teasing the Twitter world with some screenshots of the emergency dialer (which also mention Verizon Wireless), and a Facebook upload from the device, which can be found in the gallery below. The dialer is about as barebones as it gets right now, but there’s a bit of a hint of Windows Phone 7 Series in there to be sure. Finally, Gizmodo hit upon the hardware jackpot with a Mr. Blurrycam capture of the bigscreen ‘Pure’ QWERTY slider (pictured up above). If you really squint your eyes you can make out some of that “hectic and colorful” UI we’re hearing about.

Verizon suffering ‘nationwide’ data outage (update: fixed)
Having a little trouble checking in on your tweeps this morning on your Droid? Is your new Pre Plus not syncing with Facebook, or your Storm2 acting a little too calm? The problem seems to lie with Verizon, which is suffering from a “nationwide” data outage at the moment. The reason we keep putting that in quotes is because we in NY are not affected (our Droid is connecting just fine) but Verizon representatives have confirmed the issue, while people in various places all over the US are unable to connect according to the forums we’ve been perusing this morning. Verizon indicated it does not have an ETA for when things will be fixed and, sadly, it doesn’t have any status message on its site, but we’d advise not calling and bothering the support folks about this — based on how long we were on hold we’re guessing they have their hands full at the moment.
Update: We’re hearing that things are popping back online for most folks, so enjoy a little 3G with your morning cuppa.
Update 2: According to this official tweet the problem has been resolved: “VZW resolves early AM data issue that involved parts, not all, of eastern US: mix of some out, slower service, many unaffected from 4-8 AM.” So, if you’re still out, the time has come to hit up those customer service agents.

Palm Pixi now $50 on Sprint
Likely a direct counterstrike to Verizon’s $79.99 Pixi Plus, Sprint has dropped the retail price of its original WiFi-less Pixi all the way down to $49.99 after $100 mail-in rebate on a new two-year contract. As you might recall, the Pixi debuted at $100, but now that the Pre’s leaving it in the dust with both high-quality gaming and Flash support, a little more price separation between the two makes a lot of sense. Alright, Sprint, strong work — now you’ve just got to drop the Pre a few bucks to distance it from Verizon’s Pre Plus and you’ll be good to go.

Nexus One coming to Verizon March 23rd and Vodafone in April?
What better way to start your Saturday afternoon than with a pair of Nexus One release rumors. Without further ado, first up comes whispers care of Neowin that the recently-FCC’d CDMA device is launching on Verizon’s network March 23rd, perfect timing for the beginning of CTIA. And while that fits pretty neatly into that initial “Spring 2010″ launch window, there’s really no way for us to corroborate at this point other than just taking their word for it. Moving across the pond, sources from both Google and Vodafone reportedly send word to UK’s Telegraph that Voda’s getting its own model in April — obviously a far cry from the “few short weeks” we heard back in April (as that deadline’s definitely come and gone) but still not too far off. No word on price but last we heard it was rumored at around €150. You can wait diligently, can’t ya?

Nexus One hits FCC again, this time in CDMA trim
Remember how we figured out that an AT&T 3G-equipped Nexus One had stumbled its way into FCC certification not long ago? Using the same logic — mainly label shape and model number — we can safely say that this latest version to get approval is the dual-band CDMA variant that’s almost certainly destined for Verizon within the next few months. There’s not terribly much to see in the filing, but hey, take solace in knowing they’ve cleared this crucial bureaucratic hurdle (of course, Verizon’s infamous internal testing is another bureaucratic hurdle altogether).

HTC Supersonic (or Incredible) spotted on video?
It’s impossible to say with certainty what we’re looking at here, but by all appearances, this is likely the first time most of you (and all of us) have seen HTC’s so-called Supersonic on video. As a refresher, this is the phone rumored to be rocking Android, WiMAX, and pretty much every other spec line item you could possibly want for a date with destiny on Sprint later this year — and while you can’t make out much from the 40-second video, you can clearly make out the red earpiece grill we’ve seen in past pictures, suggesting that this isn’t the similarly-equipped Incredible we’ve heard of for Verizon. Anyhow, care to get dinner and a movie sometime this Summer, Supersonic? Follow the break for the full video.
Update: …and that was quick! Video’s been pulled, but if it’s any consolation, there’s not much more to it than the screen grab above. We’ll leave the video after the break just in case it comes back online.
Update 2: New video posted after the break! Yay! Also, commenters have astutely noted that there appears to be some sort of nav pad at the bottom of the phone, something the Supersonic lacks — so perhaps this is the Incredible after all, or a third Android superphone out of HTC. Clearly, we’re not complaining if that’s the case.
