Customer greeted with malware on Vodafone-issued HTC Magic (good thing it’s discontinued)
Crapware’s bad enough, but having your life torn asunder simply by plugging in that shiny new (insert USB-connected device here) is an exciting new trend — viruses find their way into the darnedest places, don’t they? It seems an employee at anti-malware firm Panda Research who’d ordered a new Magic off Vodafone UK’s site was greeted with no fewer than three nefarious executables upon plugging the device into her PC: a bot client, a password stealer, and a Conficker variant, and running a network sniffer quickly confirmed that the virii were live and ready to do harm as soon as the autorun in the Magic’s mounted mass storage was executed on her Windows machine. If this were a widespread issue, we’d certainly have heard about it in other places, so odds are good (as Panda points out) that this was simply a case of HTC or Vodafone doing an awful job of wiping a refurbished set — but it gives you pause and kind of makes you wish you worked for an anti-malware firm, at least on days when you’re plugging in a new phone for the first time. The silver lining, we suppose, is that Vodafone has recently discontinued the Magic, though that creates another problem: the only Android device it currently stocks now is the lowly Tattoo, so the X10 and Nexus One can’t come soon enough.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCLIV: HTC Tattoo joins the WinMo gang, or appears to anyway
No matter how realistic a KIRF phone looks these days, there’s always a catch somewhere. For instance, this GSM handset is pretty much an exact clone of the HTC Tattoo, except for a couple of debatably important things: the suspiciously-cheerful $169 price tag, and the fact that Windows Mobile (and not Android) is running the show. Oh, and it doesn’t end there: judging by the photo, you’d assume this evil clone runs WinMo 6.5, yet the spec sheet mutters 6.1. A typo? Maybe. Something far more baleful? Maybe. A KIRF OS to go along with the KIRF hardware? Probably. That said, it’s hard to turn down a cheap phone that packs GPS, FM radio, stereo Bluetooth audio, a spare battery and a 2.8-inch touchscreen (240 x 320), but that’s assuming that you’ve no self-esteem to speak of. Alcatel OT-980 with Android hands-on, we feel frugal just looking at it
This is arguably one of the cheesiest Android devices we’ve ever handled — and yes, we’re including KIRFs in that observation — but you’ve got to give Alcatel some credit here for taking the platform to a form factor that’s entirely under-served and doing so with an affordable price point in mind. The company plans to aggressively target HTC’s Tattoo when the OT-980 launches in its usual non-US markets later this year with Android 2.1, full HSPA, WiFi, AGPS, compass, and a 2.8-inch display. The thing is a straight-up fingerprint magnet (and the harsh lighting certainly wasn’t doing it any favors), but that’s not really any different from the Pre that it vaguely apes. The only prototype Alcatel had on hand had a busted display — if you look closely, you can make out the UI, so it seems the backlight may have passed on to the giant circuitboard in the sky. That doesn’t speak very highly of the build quality here, but then again, this is an homage to the Pre, right?

Acer Liquid e, beTouch E110 / E400, and neoTouch P300 / P400 hands-on
Acer took MWC rather seriously this year with no fewer than five phone intros to its name spanning the range from Android to Windows Mobile 6.5.3, so we went ahead and put our hands on all of them today. Starting at the bottom of the range, the lowly beTouch E110 is obviously designed to compete head-to-head with the likes of the HTC Tattoo — in fact, it apes the Tattoo’s design pretty closely in some respects. Unlike Acer’s higher-end Android phones, the E110 uses a custom skin that seems pretty well-suited for its QVGA resolution, and it’s still managing 3.6Mbps HSDPA in your choice of 900 / 2100 and 850 / 1900 flavors for different areas of the world. It feels as cheap as it looks, but as long as it’s priced appropriately, we still think it’s a reasonable way to get new audiences on the smartphone bandwagon.

Alcatel’s Pre-alike OT-980 with Android seeks to undercut HTC Tattoo
North Americans are about as familiar with Alcatel as Europeans are with baseball, but the brand — owned by China’s TCT — actually does a decent amount of low- to mid-end handset business around the world. One thing Alcatel isn’t known for, though, is venturing into the smartphone fray, so it comes as a bit of a surprise that they’re taking a swing at the Android market here with the OT-980 slider. Even more surprising, perhaps, is the fact that it basically looks like a cheesy Pre with red accents, but stay with us: TCT wants to undercut HTC’s ultra low-cost Tattoo when it brings the 980 to market, so you might be able to find this one for peanuts. Apart from the fact that it runs Donut, the spec sheet reads pretty nicely, too, with 192MB of RAM, Qualcomm’s relatively new 600MHz MSM7227 core, WiFi, 3G, and a magnetic compass, but you’ll have to wait a bit — it’s not expected to hit the market for another few months, it seems.

Motorola ‘Ruth’ specs outed, likely company’s least interesting Android phone yet
Don’t look for it to replace your Droid — or even your CLIQ — but Motorola’s got another Android phone coming up here that’s likely targeting a decidedly different market. The so-called “Ruth” — model number MB511 — has been unearthed via Motorola’s own user agent profile database, revealing a decidedly HTC Tattoo-like QVGA display, GSM / WCDMA radio of some sort, and Qualcomm MSM7200a processor. What’s more, we’re seeing a mention of Android 1.5 in the browser specs section of the profile — so whatever this is, whatever GSM carriers around the world pick it up, let’s hope there’s already an Eclair-flavored update in the pipe.

HTC ‘Touch.B’ is an Android-powered Touch2?
If you glance at this thing for just a fleeting instant, you might actually mistake it for a Touch2 — but it’s not. A closer look at the button layout shows a decided lack of keys required by WinMo 6.5, which leads us to the logical conclusion that the so-called Touch.B here — previously known under the codename “Rome” — runs Android. MobiFrance doesn’t have any additional details on the phone, its specs, or where it might launch, but if it does in fact run on the Google juice, it’s looking like a possible successor (or kissing cousin, perhaps) of the Tattoo. Now that we look at it, we’re not actually seeing the buttons that’d be required of an Android device, either — and we have heard rumors for ages now that HTC would be releasing devices running a homegrown dumbphone platform — but we’ll hold off on the conclusion-jumping until we get just a little more detail.

Verizon announces early store openings for DROID launch
We’d already heard through the grapevine that select Verizon Wireless stores would be cracking their doors open early to deal with the presumed flood of consumers “Humans” eager to snap up the first-ever Android 2.0 device, and now the carrier has come right out with the official details. We’re told that “many” of its over 2,000 retail locations will open at either 7AM or 8AM local time to field orders for the DROID, though VZW mall stores will all open at their regular time. You should check with your local store to see exactly when they’ll open, and while we can’t guarantee it, we’d guess that having an Android-related tattoo on your person is a good way to get VIP treatment once you arrive on scene. Or, you know, you could just get your Best Buy pre-order in now and save $100 up front by dodging the mail-in rebate.

Nokia Booklet 3G hits the unboxing phase of its product cycle
Might as well add your own soundtrack, because chances are, you won’t be able to understand what the narrator with a tattoo on his left hand is saying. Not that you really need, as you can probably get the gist of this Nokia Booklet 3G unboxing. We’ve got blue packaging, a power brick, a “Hello, Hei” greeting just under the portable itself, and a fairly sleek portable to boot. Of course, with a $800 price tag on the outside and an Atom processor on the inside, it’s not the most attractive of combinations. See the whole kit and caboodle after the break.

HTC Tattoo has resistive touchscreen, a few regrets
We suppose it was inevitable. In the effort to take Android to the mainstream (i.e., cheap), HTC had to commit that most controversial of technological sins: fronting a touchscreen-only device with a resistive sensor. Granted, Android is more prepared for pairing a resistive screen with your stubby fingers than something like the stylus-oriented Windows Mobile, but it’s still not going to be a joy for implementing the OS’s few gestures or the imperfect touchscreen keyboard. As we’re sure you’ll all agree.

HTC Tattoo (aka, Click) brings Android, Sense UI to all
This one sure took awhile but the oft leaked HTC Click has been renamed and kicked out the door as the Tattoo. While HTC is light on specs with the press release, we know it has a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, 3.5-mm headset jack, and microSD expansion. And besides being small and compact, the Tattoo can be personalized with owner-designed covers — hence the name. The HTC Tattoo lands in Europe early October before hitting select global markets in the months to follow.
Update: And… out pop the specs: 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7225 processor, 512MB/256MB ROM/RAM, 106 x 55.2 x 14-mm / 113 grams, 2.8-inch touchscreen LCD pushing 240×320 QVGA pixels, 900/2100MHz HSPA/UMTS and quad-band GSM/EDGE, internal GPS, 802.11b/g WiFi, digital compass, accelerometer, and Bluetooth 2.0. Not bad for a mass-market device.
