Portal 2’s (canceled) competitive multiplayer detailed
Arguably the biggest addition to Portal 2 is the new two-player co-op campaign. But, did you know that Valve was also working on competitive multiplayer as well? Valve’s Erik Wolpaw told 1UP that they “had something up and running — the best way to describe it is sort of speedball meets Portal. You know, a sports analog.” Essentially, the goal was to get a ball from one end to another, using portals.
But don’t expect to find this mode in the game when it ships next year. Why? “It quickly became apparent that while it’s fun for about two seconds to drop portals under people and things like that, it quickly just devolves into pure chaos,” Wolpaw explained. “It lost a lot of the stuff that was really entertaining about Portal.”
While Valve have given up on competitive Portal-ing, that hasn’t stopped the fan community from creating their own games. Team Portress, for example, mixes a Portal Gun into Team Fortress 2, with some hilarious results.

160GB PS3 Slim, 320GB Move bundle coming to US and Europe this fall
The leaks weren’t wrong, they just weren’t the whole story. A 160GB PlayStation 3 Slim is indeed coming to the US — Europe, too — but additionally, there’s a heftier 320GB Sports Champions Move bundle. The former standalone console is available now stateside for $299, and according to the GamesCom press conference, Europeans will have to wait until October for 299 Euros. As for the biggie, which includes the game and one-player Move package, that’s due out September 19th in US (or September 15th across the pond) for $399 and 349 Euros, respectively — just in time for holiday shopping sprees.

Modu’s T-Phone captured in the wild chilling with Android? (video)
Look everyone, it’s the littlest handset come to deliver Android cheer. Last month we got word that Modu was working on a touchscreen device dubbed the T-Phone, featuring full 3G and microSD expansion, also referred to as the Modu 2. Now we have video of what looks to be the same phone out in the wild, running an early version of Android (possibly 1.6) and looking rather fit next to an iPhone and an HTC G2. Curiously, this is said to be lacking 3G data entirely, only pulling data over WiFi, but we have to think that’s just an issue with this prototype and not something that will be a feature of the retail release. It also sports FM tuning and, curiously, a stylus — resistive ahoy? We’ll have to wait and see.

Apple Cinema Display goes to 27 inches, 16:9 aspect ratio
Having reached a grand old age in the rapidly cycling tech world, Apple’s 24-inch LED Cinema Display is today getting itself a new sibling. The new 27-inch display clocks in at a 2560 x 1440 resolution, sports a 16:9 aspect ratio, and does it all for the (not so) low price of $999. That might not sound like a steal, but Dell’s similar U2711 (both offer IPS at the same resolution) actually retails for a hundie more at $1,099. For the price Apple includes a built-in iSight camera, a three port powered USB hub, and a universal MagSafe connector for charging up your MacBook. Interestingly, Apple has really built this display to be the ultimate MacBook or MacBook Pro companion, since a single cable breaks out into the USB, Mini DisplayPort (with audio support), and MagSafe plug that are just about all your laptop requires when sitting down at a desk. PR is after the break, and the screen will start shipping in September.

iPad-toting Syte Shirt redefines ‘multitasking’
Disgusted with Apple’s refusal to bestow honest-to-goodness backgrounding to the iPad, even though the (presumably) weaker iPhone 4 has been doing it for weeks? You aren’t alone. Syte Shirt, a new startup with a vision to change the world in a way you’ve never even dreamed of, has just announced its first product: the iPad-toting shirt that you’re undoubtedly gawking at above. This pre-shrunk heavyweight cotton tee sports a slit on the inside for sliding your tablet into, and there’s a window on the front that enables the wearer (or anyone else, for that matter) to fully interact with the tablet without you having to disrobe. Imagine that! Heck, there are even ports for accessing the dock connector and the 3.5mm headphone jack, which certainly helps to justify the otherwise unconscionable $49.95 to $54.95 price tag. Right? Right?

New Xbox 360 250GB review
When we first saw its face in a Italian ad, more than one Engadget editor called its bluff: “The top half doesn’t line up with the bottom,” some said, “that’s got to be Photoshopped.” While that early image was indeed CG, the form factor was certainly not — the new Xbox 360 sports enough sleek angles and disappearing curves we’ve taken to calling it the Stealthbox. As mother always told you, though, it’s what’s inside that counts; does that glossy exterior house any improvements, or is it hiding just another Xbox? Find out after the break.

Acer’s updated Predator gaming desktop swoops down from the trees to decapitate the competition
When launched back in 2008, Acer’s Predator desktop was a mean gaming rig — and we don’t just mean because it had a tendency to actually set things on fire. We’re pretty sure the new, just announced revision of the desktop won’t suffer the same ailment, a non-customizable update that sports a 2.8GHz Core i7 930 CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 GPU, 1.5TB of storage, 12GB of DDR3 RAM, and an asking price of one buck under $2,000. That’s a solid deal, and the new black and orange case design looks solid too, every bit as loud as old orange and black one. It’s just perfect for showing your opponents just how serious you are about your gaming, though we’re thinking it might have been even more popular if the Stanley Cup had gone the other way.

Primo Battery Cube brings extra life to mini or microUSB devices, is not actually a cube
If you, like we, were disappointed by mophie’s unwillingness to support anything lacking an Apple dock port in its new line of juice packs, here’s an alternative. Primo is launching the Battery Cube, a decidedly non-cube-shaped device that is perhaps a bit chubby but manages compatibility with either micro or miniUSB devices. The $40 battery, which launches on July 12, charges over USB, packs a 1,000mAh cell inside, and sports four LED lights on top to give you an idea of just how many of those milliampere-hours have yet to be served. Oh, and it’s shape, because of its unequal sides it’s actually a cuboid, not a cube. But of course you knew that, you geometry whiz you.

JumpStart Dual USB charger sports an integrated rechargeable battery
It’s a sad fact of life, really. Regardless of where you go, you’ll end up needing to recharge something in your carry-on. Just the mere thought of locating an AC adapter in that airport you’re headed to is enough to give even the most hardened traveler a reason to think twice, and tracking down one of those inverters for your road trip is just about the last thing you’d like to be doing. DigiPower has just pushed out the solution to all of your problems, with the JumpStart Dual 2-in-1 battery / AC adapter offering the ability to juice up a pair of USB devices via the internal 1,700mAh rechargeable battery. Sadly for all of you iPad owners, each port is only capable of rejuvenating 5V devices, but there’s a status indicator, emergency flashlight and folding plugs for “easy transport.” The company claims that this can be recharged over 500 times, after which you’ll need to contact Sir Odor Blocker after the break for a pinch of P-P-P-P-P-P-Power.

Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 tablet sports WiFi and 3G data, about as thick as an iPhone?
Today we’ve received an anonymous tip with even more info. After a series of communications with this person, we’re confident enough to at least pass along what was said. Mind you, we’re still classifying it as rumor until we see further evidence. First off, our source claims to have spent time with the same four-button device we saw in the video yesterday. The “sturdy and well-built” tablet was “very thin,” described as about the same thickness as an iPhone. Our source says that the P1000 model is correct and that it will indeed feature “full phone functionality” albeit without a dedicated earpiece on the bezel — for audio, you’ll have to rely on a Bluetooth headset or the P1000’s speaker. Thank gawd… the last thing we want to see if someone screaming into a 7-inch tablet held to the side of their head. There’s a front-facing camera for video calling and a 3.2 megapixel camera around back for shooting pictures and video. Granted, 3.2 megapixels seems suspiciously low for the notoriously pixel greedy Samsung. Besides Bluetooth, we’re told that the Galaxy Tab will also feature WiFi and 3G data, a standard SIM slot, and can tether over USB or WiFi. Oh, and the battery can’t be removed and the version our source used had a 6×4 icon layout and appeared to be running stock Android 2.2 Froyo. Interesting, eh?
P.S. GPS too.

PlayStation Move bundle up for pre-order at Best Buy and GameStop

We’re sure every other retailer in the world will have PlayStation Move orders up in the next week or so, but Best Buy and GameStop are leading the charge: the $99 Move bundle that include the PS Eye, a Move controller and Sports Champions is now available for pre-order, with an estimated delivery date between November 1st and the 6th — just a little bit after the announced September 19th launch date. We’re sure that’ll be revised as things get firmed up, though. So, what’s it going to be? Considering we’re still guessing at Microsoft’s final Kinect pricing, we’d say the decision’s a tough one, but honestly, you know we’re totally buying all of this stuff and having an all-night dance off.
[Thanks, William]

Dell Streak review
Streak. It needs no introduction, as this slate’s been gaining a lot of attention amongst gadget lovers around the world. Thanks to the UK launch last Friday, we were one of the first on this planet to procure Dell’s finalized Android 1.6 phone from O2. Yep, you heard right — Engadget’s now in possession of two Streaks, with the older one still in its original and somewhat unstable prototype state. Our new toy sports a matte “carbon” finish instead of chrome (no word on future availability; the red version’s coming in two weeks’ time), and now 399MB of RAM instead of 405MB (according to Android System Info app; yet it’s advertised as 512MB). Anyhow, now that we have the real deal, there’s plenty to go through, so join us after the break to see if the Streak’s really going to start a new trend.
