Palm Pre fake tires of waiting for webOS 2.0, takes up iOS and BlackBerry OS lookalikes instead

We feel your pain: you love your BlackBerry at work and your iPhone for personal use, but as hardware goes, nothing gets your motor running quite like the Pre’s pebble-esque shell. Trust us, we’ve all been there! Well, a new clone out of China seeks solve all your technological woes by combining an iOS-inspired user interface and the Pre’s body — with an iPhone home button thrown in for good measure, of course — and when the time comes to throw on the suit and tie and head to work, you can switch the UI over to BlackBerry mode. As far as we can tell, it still functions like an iOS clone here, but at least the skin will remind you of the good ol’ Bold days. Looks like you can’t buy this thing online, but considering how well the software works in most of these things, it’s probably for the best.

Aceeca’s PalmOS-based PDA32 gets reviewed, albeit in prototype form

Ah, the dream does live on. If we’re being straight with you, we didn’t exactly have the highest hopes for Aceeca’s PDA32 to ever make it out of the dreamworld in which it was created, but apparently it’s well on its well to commercialization. For reasons unknown, of course. The good folks over at TamsBlog managed to get ahold of a prototype device, powered by one of yesteryear’s greatest operating systems and encased in a comically large shell. It’s important to note that this isn’t a finalized retail unit, but it’s still fairly fascinating that an object like the one you’re looking at above is actually about to ship in the year 2010 A.D. The overview is about what you’d expect, noting that the screen is above average, the enclosure itself is downright “fat,” and the whole thing seems far more sensible in the enterprise realm than the consumer one. Sadly, there’s no real talk of software performance, but we suspect that’ll come when the final product ships out. Hit the source link for a fascinating look at a device you’ll never buy.

Exclusive: Samsung Cetus i917 bows for AT&T, shows off its Windows Phone 7 ways

Does the almost Pre-esque shape of this beast look vaguely familiar? It should, because it matches up nicely with the outline of the Samsung Cetus we saw in the FCC a little while back. Indeed, we’re told this is the Cetus i917 destined for AT&T, featuring Windows Phone 7 in a glossy, black, curved shell that should fit nicely in those new skinny pants you just overpaid for. We don’t know when this is hitting exactly, but we suspect everyone involved — Microsoft, AT&T, and Samsung — wants to have this on shelves in time for the holiday season. Hit up the gallery below for a couple more shots.

Nokia C7 leaks again in press-quality photo shoot

We’ve yet to see an official announcement for Nokia’s all-but-real C7 with Symbian^3, but let’s be honest: wouldn’t you rather see a few more leaked shots of it posing next to a nip of Chivas Regal anyway? Of course you would, and Chinese site zol.com.cn has your number along with a few thoughts on the device: it’s got a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display, 8 megapixel camera sans Carl Zeiss branding (a nod to the fact that the Nseries will still reign supreme for photography), dual LED flash, and a pretty meager 1,200mAh battery, presumably to keep the shell sexy and slim. It’s unclear when we might see Nokia finally fess up to the C7’s existence, but Nokia World in the middle of next month seems like an obvious target; stay tuned.

Is this the Samsung NX100 interchangeable lens camera?

Samsung’s been dishing quite a few pocketable cameras of late, but it seems as if its NX100 may have slipped out a few moments before showtime. The screen capture you’re looking at above was snagged from the end of a new National Geographic promo video — one that was uploaded on August 5th but has already been pulled back. Rumor has it that the white device there on the right is a forthcoming NX100, which would make it the latest in Sammy’s promising NX line of interchangeable lens cameras. There’s obviously no telling what kind of components lie beneath the shell, but the grab does give us reason to believe at least a few new lenses are also on the horizon. We’d say that this lines up nicely for an official reveal at Photokina, but you already knew that, didn’t you?

Update: And now we’re hearing that the NX100 will make its official debut at IFA in just under a month. Huzzah!

Motorola Sage spotted in the wild, Mr. Blurrycam claims there’s QWERTY on board

Sure, we’d heard tell of a Motorola Sage and briefly posited that the 850 / 1900MHz Android device could be AT&T’s followup to the Backflip, but bless our bluetooth and count our digital compasses if this isn’t it. Ubergizmo obtained this shot of a Motorola device that’s a dead ringer for the aforementioned horizontal clamshell, complete with the huge trackpad (mounted on the front this time) and 3.1-inch screen. Mr. Blurrycam reportedly says it will sport Android 2.1 and a hardware keyboard as well, though from this angle there’s no telling where Motorola might have stuck the QWERTY in, on or around the silver-trimmed shell. Portrait slider, anyone? [Thanks, Calob]

ChouChou Electric Butterfly flutters to life inside a jar

Most robot pets may not be easily mistaken for the real thing, but that’s not likely to be the case with the ChouChou Electric Butterfly, which might even have a few people reaching to free it from its jar. Unfortunately, it’s the jar that keeps the butterfly “alive” — it has some AA batteries in its lid that apparently allow the butterfly to respond to vibrations and flutter about. That may not sound like much, but the effect is pretty striking — see for yourself after the break. Of course, just because it’s simple doesn’t mean its cheap. You’ll have to shell out a hefty $76 to bring this one home.

MobileProtect now officially ready to insure your iPhone 4 from everything*

And just like that, it’s confirmed. We’d heard through the grapevine that AT&T may be fixing to certify a third-party to sell an iPhone insurance program, and now it looks as if Asurion has been given the green light by Ma Bell, and not a moment too soon. According to the company, MobileProtect is the “only iPhone (and iPhone 4) insurance to protect against loss or theft (the reason for nearly 50% of phone claims), while also covering water or other liquid damage, accidental damage, and out-of-warranty failure.” Of course, you’ll have to shell out a borderline-ridiculous $11.99 per month for the coverage (and yeah, there’s still a deductible), which is made even more outrageous by the fact that the iPhone 4 and its Gorilla Glass is nigh indestructible. Er, wait…

*Claims of “everything” are subject to interpretation, as anyone who has ever dealt with an insurance company will attest.

HTC Legend with North American 3G now available unlocked

Sure, the Desire’s coming to a handful of regional American carriers later this year, but what if you want the smaller, sleeker, more aluminum-clad Legend? Well, there aren’t any carrier-branded options in the States — but it seems that a number of unlocked units with US 3G bands are starting to ooze out of the cracks. Negri Electronics has an 850 / 1900MHz 3G Legend in its store for a shade under $500, which means you’re not getting much of a discount over the more powerful 850 / 1900MHz version of the Nexus One — but you are getting a pretty sweet unibody shell and an optical d-pad. Any takers?

KlearKase joins booming Kindle waterproof enclosure market

You know a product’s taking off in popularity when new cases for it start dropping on a daily basis. So here we are, two Kindle cases in two days, only this one is klearly the feistier one. The KlearKase press release wastes no time in slamming yesterday’s M-Edge Guardian for being twice as expensive, three times as heavy, and presumably nowhere near as cool. This new 6-ounce polycarbonate shell has some industry bigwigs behind it too, with Dick Brass and other former Microsoft execs forming its brain trust. We still don’t see ourselves spending $39.99 on something like this, but if you feel otherwise, Amazon will have stock of the KlearKase by the end of the month.

Samsung teases next Android announce, Galaxy S bound for T-Mobile next month?

It’s no secret that Samsung wants to spread its high-end Galaxy S far and wide, but the exact details of its US attack have been a mystery thus far. TmoNews is reporting a “trusted source” as saying that the phone is pegged for a launch on T-Mobile on July 21, which matches up with some chatter we’ve been hearing as well. Though T-Mobile’s been supporting Android as aggressively as any carrier in the world, the company lacks a hero device — something akin to the Droid Incredible or EVO 4G — so it would stand to reason that Samsung’s best Android gear to date would be a good fit over there. Nothing wrong with a Super AMOLED display in a sub-10mm shell, now, is there? In the meantime, we’ve been invited to an event on June 29 to see “the next generation in Android smartphones” from Sammy, so we’re hoping for some more details then — and naturally, we’ll be on hand.

Panasonic launches Skype for 2010 VIERA Cast TVs

We managed to get an early look at Panasonic’s TV-friendly implementation of Skype back at CES in January, but the company has just now finally activated the app on all of its 2010 VIERA Cast-enabled TVs (including the VT25, VT20, G25, and G20 Series). To take advantage of it, however, you’ll also have to shell out $170 for Panasonic’s TY-CC10W webcam, which supports both VGA and 720p video, and packs four unidirectional microphones, an echo canceling system, and some beam-forming technology that promises to deliver clear audio over a typical TV viewing distance of three to four meters. Head on past the break for the complete press release, as well as Panasonic’s requisite old-people-don’t-get-technology ad for the TVs.

Bacteria creates Bluetooth SNES controller, makes smartphone gamers drool (video)

Bacteria creates Bluetooth SNES controller, makes smartphone gamers drool (video)

We recently checked out the Game Gripper, which quickly turns a Motorola Droid keyboard into a gamepad, and when it comes to simplicity and cost it doesn’t get much better than that. But, it isn’t quite the same as a real controller, not not like this creation from Bacteria, creator of many a wonderfully hacked console. Here he took an MSI BGP100 Bluetooth GamePad and stuffed it into a classic SNES controller shell, enabling all the buttons except, sadly, the lowly Select. It’s all demonstrated in a thrilling video after the break that features action, gameplay, and nearly a minute of screw-turning excitement. The best part? He was hired to do this, meaning if you ask nicely (and write a check) he might just make one for you, too.

Visa and DeviceFidelity working to bring mobile payment functionality to iPhone

This ain’t the first rodeo for Visa and DeviceFidelity, and if we had to guess, we suspect it won’t be the last. Just a few short months after teaming up to bring contactless payments to any mobile with a microSD slot, the two are at it again — this time aiming for the oh-so-tantalizing iPhone market. Reportedly, the tandem is toiling away in an effort to concoct a protective iPhone shell with a secure memory card that hosts Vista’s contactless payment app, payWave. As it stands, the product would only function on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, leaving upcoming iPhone 4G / HD / Barhopper buyers out in the cold. As with any other payWave-enabled handset, this would allow users to simply tap and go when checking out, a process that our pals over in Japan have had down for centuries now. If all goes well, market trials of the payment-enabled iPhone are set to begin this summer, or approximately six months too late for anyone to seriously care.

Apple’s Seamlessly Embedded Heart Rate Monitor could turn the iPhone into a new-age mood ring

Nike is making millions from its Apple-friendly wares, designed to turned technophiles into fitness freaks. Imagine the possibilities if the iPhone could not only track your running stride but also monitor your heart rate while doing it. That’s one of a suite of potential uses for this patent app from Apple, a Seamlessly Embedded Heart Rate Monitor. The design is for a series of electrodes that are, well, seamlessly embedded into the shell of a given device in such a way that they are “not visibly or haptically distinguishable on the device.” The device could then, with a touch, measure heart-rate, uniquely identify a user, and even “determine the user’s mood from the cardiac signals.” Just imagine the new flood of EKG-related apps: iPalpitate, Murmur Maker, Cardiac Arrest… the possibilities are endless.

[Thanks, Staska]

Acer set to fill our lives with MID goodness in May

Acer set to fill our lives with MID goodness in May

For Acer, the future is the MID, and for you, that future starts next month. In May the company will launch what is said to be a “full line” of mobile internet devices, following up on that patent application filed way back in January of 2009 (which came complete with the incredibly high-detail picture above). What the company is not saying is exactly what the nature of these MIDs will be, except than they will be rocking version 4.0 of the company’s Shell UI. It’s a new version of the layer that was applied over Windows Mobile on smartphones like the M900, going all Bob on us by trying to recreate a virtual office. At this point we don’t know whether version 4.0 will still be built atop WinMo, but at least we won’t have to wait long to find out.
