Missing your oldie Xbox 360’s bright and airy white finish? Well, Microsoft’s still not willing to sell you a slimmified 360 in any color other than black (excepting the limited edition Halo gear), but at least you can gaze upon the singular example of what a white one may look like above. This seemingly repainted Xbox 360 250GB (to give it its official, and ridiculous, name) has been lovingly put together over in China and really makes us wonder why Microsoft is depriving us of such snowy good looks. Perhaps it wanted to draw a clear between the old and the new? Either way, hit the source for the cheapest way to peek an all-white slim 360 without giving the Colorware crew a call.

[Thanks, Anthony]

Samsung launches new NF and SF Series laptops with ’shark’-like designs http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-launches-new-nf-and-sf-series-laptops-with-shark-like-designs.php http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-launches-new-nf-and-sf-series-laptops-with-shark-like-designs.php#comments Thu, 02 Sep 2010 02:51:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-launches-new-nf-and-sf-series-laptops-with-shark-like-designs.php

It’s that time of the year again! Yep, the time when most laptop makers start thinking about the holiday season and unleash a massive amount of systems. Samsung’s kicking off its announcements at IFA with the SF and NF Series, both of which have a brand new wave or fin-like designs — they were apparently codenamed “shark” within the company. Beginning with the netbooks, the NF series will hit in the coming weeks and will be available in two skus — the ivory, single-core Atom NF210 will be $379 and the silver NF310 will have a dual-core Atom processor for $399. We got a chance to check them out a few days ago and found the overall build quality to be really solid — we really loved the new chiclet keyboard as well as the swirly pattern on the metal touchpad. Sammy’s also claiming over 10 hours of battery life on them, but we’ll obviously want to test that for ourselves.

On the bigger and badder end is the SF Series. Similar to the netbooks, the mainstream laptops have glossy lids with the new wave like edges. According to Samsung’s global press release, they’ll be available with Core i3 / i5 processors and in three different sizes — there’s the 13.3-inch SF310, 14-inch SF410 and 15.6-inch SF510. The US team tells us the $749 Core i3-powered, 500GB hard drive-packing SF510 will hit the market soon and will be a Best Buy exclusive. We got a peek at that one as well, and similarly love the new chiclet keyboard, though we’re hesitant on this one’s single-button touchpad. Until we bring you some full reviews, there’s additional details in the press release below and some hands-on shots in the gallery.

What’s inside the T-Mobile G2, aside from fancy hinges and an HSPA+ capable modem? We can’t say for sure, but this week saw a zip file from China set the Android community astir with visions of vanilla frozen yogurt heaped high atop a stack of powerful silicon. Android Guys discovered an allegedly leaked G2 Android 2.2 build (sans Sense) at the website of one 911sniper, last seen outing supposed HTC specs left and right, and our old friend Cyanogen took it upon himself to have a peek inside. What should he find but references to Qualcomm’s MSM7×30 chipset, with all the silky-smooth 720p multimedia playback that brings, as well as the remote possibility of dual-mode HSPA+ / LTE support if the “x” in “MSM7×30″ turns out to be a “6.” There’s no telling whether any of this is legit at this point, but we dare to dream.

We can’t say there’s a real shortage of streaming, set-top boxes on the market, but that doesn’t mean we won’t welcome Sony’s addition with open arms. Not to be confused with a netbook or a nettop, the Netbox streams Sony’s Bravia Internet services — YouTube, Netflix, DailyMotion, etc. — as well as supports a “wide range” of video formats including DivX and MKV. Although it’s got 802.11n WiFi baked in, the rather compact box has an Ethernet port around back as well as an USB jack on the front for hooking up an external hard drive for watching any of your legally-downloaded (obviously!) videos. Sadly, when we got to check out the Netbox earlier today it wasn’t connected to a network — go figure, with all those connectivity options — but the software was up and running, and we got to take a peek at the remote app on an Xperia X10. Fret not, the free app will be available for the iPhone and other Android phones. Look, we’d understand holding out for a BRAVIA with Google TV, but all in all for $130 we wouldn’t blame you for heading off to Sony right now and picking one of these little guys up.

Well, that didn’t take long. Just a few months after Fujisoft’s PALRO was formally introduced to the Japanese education segment, said humanoid is now set to receive a host of new applications as well as become useful as a people tracker. It’s bruited that PALRO will soon gain a Twitter client (to read tweets aloud as best it can), a cooking app, a Japanese word game and remote monitoring abilities (among others), but it’s unclear how these obviously commercial apps will help / not help the robot inch closer to a citizen’s release. In related news, PALRO has been spotted with a few newfound abilities, namely the instinct to track people and objects via its built-in camera. We’ll spare you the rhetoric on why teaching these things to watch our every move is a tragic, tragic mistake, but feel free to peek the video after the break if you’re brushing the inevitable downfall of mankind off as a silly rumor.

Christmas came early at Engadget HQ this year, as evidenced by the picture above — you’re looking at two Dell Thunder prototype smartphones, each with some surprising quirks, and hints that they might include global HSPA, AWS for the likes of T-Mobile, and maybe even a dash of CDMA support. We’ll warn you ahead of time that these are labeled EVT1 for “engineering verification test” and date back to the April leak, so they’re about as early as you can get — don’t expect the final handset to arrive without some significant differences. Good? Then peek the gallery below, hit the break, and let’s get on with the show.

Razer BlackWidow Ultimate mechanical keyboard offers backlit, programmable keys http://lemenem.com/tech/razer-blackwidow-ultimate-mechanical-keyboard-offers-backlit-programmable-keys.php http://lemenem.com/tech/razer-blackwidow-ultimate-mechanical-keyboard-offers-backlit-programmable-keys.php#comments Thu, 19 Aug 2010 01:58:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/razer-blackwidow-ultimate-mechanical-keyboard-offers-backlit-programmable-keys.php

There are mechanical keyboards, and then there’s Razer’s newest duo. For the past three years, the gaming accessory company has been toiling in a back room trying to figure out how to really get mechanical keyboards right; according to it, the vast majority of the options today “feature stiff keys that cause key actuation fatigue,” and it has sought to remedy said issue with the BlackWidow and BlackWidow Ultimate. Launched today over at Gamescom, these two keyboards offer key actuation that feels much like a mouse click, with an actuation point that’s actually halfway through the full travel distance. The company claims that its power-packin’ pair has one of the lightest actuation forces for all keyboards, making it ideal for hardcore gamers who can’t be bothered with missing a single keystroke. The standard BlackWidow offers up fully programmable keys with on-the-fly macro recording as well as five additional gaming keys, while the Ultimate edition adds individually backlit keys with five levels of lighting, 3.5-inch audio and microphone out jacks as well as an additional USB port. Both ‘boards are due out next month for $79.99 / $129.99, respectively, and you can peek the full specs list in the press release just past the break.

It all started with Micro Four Thirds, but now just about everyone is jonesing to play along in the mirrorless camera game. The crew over at Serious Compacts managed to get ahold of quite a few contenders (Samsung’s NX10, Sony’s NEX5, Olympus’ E-P2 and E-PL1, and Panasonic’s GF1, GF2 and GH1), and rather than taking ‘em apart one by one, they’ve decided to size ‘em up in a fantastic size comparison piece. From lenses to bodies, all six cameras are shown from various angles, and even if you’ve convinced yourself to not be in the market for one of these bad boys, the eye candy alone is worth a peek. Furthermore, the group has been entered into a telling ISO comparison test, but if you came here looking for a spoiler, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Tap those links below to get your study on, won’tcha?

We’ll be straight with you — prior to this fine day, we’d never heard of the whiz kids at Waterloo Labs, but we’ll be keeping our focus locked on their initiatives from this point forward. Why, you ask? Just look at that bloke above, who is in the middle of asking Mario to leap over a tunnel with a simple eye movement. Granted, we’ve seen eye-controlled interfaces before, but there’s just something — shall we say… inspirational — about being able to control your favorite NES titles with your own face. Better still, the crew is providing the full blown how-to down in the source, and if you’re not a fan of strapping an array of electrodes on your person, you still owe it to yourself to peek the video past the break. Oh, and it’s good to see these guys still have to blow on their NES cartridges to get ‘em to work right — misery adores company, eh?

We might one day live in a world where everyday electronics can fend for themselves against household disasters but, for the time being, we can only marvel at one of a kind projects like this “Floppy Legs” drive from British design team Chambers Judd. As you can probably surmise, they’ve added some legs to an otherwise ordinary external floppy drive, which remain concealed most of the time, but spring to life if there’s liquid spilled near the drive. Head on past the break to see that amazing feat for yourself, and be sure to take a peek at some of the team’s earlier projects as well, including the Gesundheit Radio that “sneezes” to clear away dust.

Yeah, seriously. While Aircell’s Gogo in-flight WiFi service has been blocking VoIP calling services (Skype being the most obvious example) from day one, it’s apparently not throwing the same brick wall in the face of Apple’s new standard. Our good pals over at TUAW managed to record a (relatively) solid two minute FaceTime conversation with an iPhone 4 owner, and only after you realize that said owner is a few thousand feet above the Earth’s surface does this all become a lot more interesting. We know for a fact that certain iPhone 4 owners have had difficulty with FaceTime conversations when using highly firewalled access points (like those found in hotels and corporate offices), but it seems as if seat 16A is cleared for transmission. For now, anyway. Head on past the break to peek the FaceTime ad that Apple forgot to make.

Today, the company has finally revealed the first actual shots of the forthcoming device, along with a video showing it in action. While diminutive, it’s certainly not as compact and discrete as IR-enabled cases, but if you’ve already committed to an iPod touch / iPhone / iPad case (or just prefer rocking your device sans clothing), this here dongle is likely the next best thing. In case you’re wondering, this little guy will transform your iDevice into a universal remote, enabling it to talk to any home entertainment component that listens to IR (read: that’s just about all of ‘em). July is upon us — do you know what that means? The OnStar eNav feature is now fully Google-fied, and we’re desperately hoping that other factory navigation systems take notice of the awesomeness and begin to do likewise in the not-so-distant future. We managed to grab some hands-on time with a Moorestown-powered MeeGo tablet prototype during the hustle and bustle that was Computex 2010, but if you’re looking for a more subdued, PBS-approved rundown of what the forthcoming operating system will offer, you’re in the right place. Hosted up just after the break is a video demo of the pre-alpha user interface, complete with a finger-led walkthrough of the entire system. We’ll be frank — what we’re seeing here is downright dazzling, and it all looks a heck of a lot easier to wrap one’s noodle around than a full-on copy of Win7. Peek it for yourself, won’t you?

[Thanks, Allen]

We’ve already gotten an early peek at what’s in store for MeeGo on handsets courtesy of some leaked UI guidelines, and it looks like folks now won’t have to wait too much longer to try it out for themselves — Nokia has confirmed that the pre-alpha release will be available on June 30th. That will be followed by the “fully productized” version sometime in October, which should also coincide with the release of some actual MeeGo-based handsets. No further details beyond that just yet, but N900 users should be the first to get a taste of a true MeeGo handset experience — despite Nokia’s lack of official support.

Good news, Android fans! HTC’s Aria — arguably the first Google-fied phone on AT&T worth caring about — is seemingly slipping onto carrier floors a few days early. As the story goes, the Sense-equipped, Android 2.1-powered handset was supposed to go on sale this Sunday, but based on these unboxing shots from a giddy tipster, it’s clearly ready to be procured early in some locations. Still unsure if it’s worth your $129.99 on contract? Have a peek at our review right here.

Update: We’re also hearing through the grapevine that these are in stock in certain Best Buy Mobile locations.

[Thanks, Travis]

Stock of Sony’s premier new compact system camera is still pretty scarce on the ground, but British photography retailer Jessops has managed to round up a batch and is ready to ship you one right this minute. Provided, that is, that you’re equipped with £589 ($687) and a lusting for the silver variety of the NEX-5. The swarthy variant and the kit that includes a 16mm pancake lens are not yet ready for their time in the spotlight, but you can pre-order them now as well. Or, should your needs not stretch to quite such stratospheric heights, peek out the NEX-3, which can already be had from US e-tailers at far saner price tags.

[Thanks, David]

Even as the Kinect-exclusive Dance Central got certain Engadget editors into the groove, it didn’t resonate with all of us, so we headed downstairs for a peek at Your Shape, to get in touch with our inner Zen — and beat things up, of course. We had a blast punching blocks, though the system only recognized strikes that crossed our own body, and some editors were tripped up by the mirrored virtual doubles the game generates. Actual yoga poses were far better done, with Kinect accurately tracking our moves with little perceptible delay. Unlike in Wii Fit, which merely measures center of balance, a joint gauge of sorts (you can see the angle of your bones) let us readily tell when we were slouching or off-kilter, and adjust our posture respectively. We broke a sweat, looked like doofuses and had fun doing it — what more could you want? Video after the break.

During our time at ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut this past week, we were able to peek inside every nook and cranny of the company’s technological side. We discovered some pretty remarkable things about the culture and attitude toward innovation, and while the bulk of that discovery will be seen in a forthcoming Engadget Show segment, we couldn’t help but share some insight from a kind fellow who has been deeply involved in the blinking lights portion of ESPN from day one. We sat down for a brief one-on-one interview with Chuck Pagano — ESPN’s executive vice president of technology — following the outfit’s 3D launch, and while we were both bitter over the 1-1 result in the South Africa vs. Mexico match, he was understandably excited about the future of his firm’s latest channel. For Chuck’s take on 3D, the move to HD and the impending arrival of ESPN streams on your phone, be sure to grab your best reading glasses and click on through.

An iPad stuffed inside an iBook not your cup of tea? Then perhaps this Macintosh Classic mod will be better suited to your more discerning, old school tastes. As you might expect, there’s not a lot involved in this one — just some gutted internals and an opening on the side that lets you slip in an iPad, which magically fits just where the old CRT used to be. Head on past the break for the video, and hit up the source link below for a peek at some of the possibilities offered by the mod.

Update: What would a Mac be without a keyboard? Wonder no more — just hit the break for video number two. [Thanks, Sapan]

Well well, what’s this? Our pal Stuart Miles at Pocket-lint spotted an interesting detail on one of Apple’s iPhone 4 screenshots: an “Open in ‘Keynote’” button while viewing an attachment in Mail. It’s since been replaced by a shot that reads “Open in ‘iBooks’,” but it certainly seems like the iWork suite will eventually make it across the iOS range from the iPad. While we’re not going to pretend like that’s nearly a big a deal as Microsoft integrating Office into Windows Phone 7, it’s still a welcome move, as we know more than a few people who’d like to make some work-type edits on the go. Why we didn’t get a peek at this today we don’t know, but we’ve got a feeling we’ll hear more about it as June 21 gets nearer.

Intel has managed to make Moorestown-based phones do an awful lot of things on stage. Multitask, scale photos sans lag, and automatically correct your grammar before it comes out of your mouth. But believe it or not, one thing we haven’t seen the Aava Mobile-built reference design do is play the full PC version of World of Warcraft and / or Quake III (from within Moblin) for over an hour on a full charge. Well, until this week’s Computex event. Peek a couple of videos just past the break if you’re in disbelief, and trust us when we say that it had no issues keep the frames flowing at a comfortable clip. The future is bright, people.

Always thought the iPad should’ve really just been an enlarged iPhone? No, seriously — like an iPhone after one of those “Honey, I Blew Up the Kids” incidents? Well, iiView is bringing just that to market this month, except its M1Touch runs Windows 7 Premium and packs an Intel Atom N450 processor along with 2GB of RAM. It also has a 250GB hard drive and a 1.3-megapixel cam on its left bezel. We finally got to see the tablet up close and personal — it’s been under lock and key in the Microsoft booth all week — and it’s pretty much the biggest iPhone you’ve ever seen. The capacitive touchscreen was fairly responsive, though there was a noticeable lag in opening programs. We’re told it also has an accelerometer and that the familiar circular button on the right bezel will bring you back to the desktop, but both were disabled on the display model. Around the edges you’ll spot a trio of ports, a SIM slot, a mini HDMI output and a microphone jack. As for the actual feel of this thing, it’s pretty thick from the sides and weighs 1.5 pounds. Chances are that you stopped reading this post a few minutes ago and started clicking through the gallery to see shots of bugger alongside a normal iPhone, but we’d encourage you to also peek the video waiting just past the break. Oh, and if you’d like to give your iPhone an inferiority complex, you can always head on over to that source link and order one of these for $499.

OCZ reveals consumer-level RevoDrive PCIe SSD, blazing fast HSDL data interface http://lemenem.com/tech/ocz-reveals-consumer-level-revodrive-pcie-ssd-blazing-fast-hsdl-data-interface.php http://lemenem.com/tech/ocz-reveals-consumer-level-revodrive-pcie-ssd-blazing-fast-hsdl-data-interface.php#comments Thu, 03 Jun 2010 02:27:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/ocz-reveals-consumer-level-revodrive-pcie-ssd-blazing-fast-hsdl-data-interface.php

OCZ has a penchant for doling out new kit at trade shows, and this year’s Computex is no different. The star of the new-release show was the RevoDrive, a PCIe card with between 128GB and 480GB of SSD onboard. The unit we saw here in Taipei was near-final, with a pair of SandForce SF-1200 controllers, a daughter board expansion slot (for possibly combining two in a RAID scenario) and a promised starting price of around $400 to $600 (not to mention read / write times of nearly 540MB/sec). Obviously, this hits well below the multi-thousand dollar PCIe SSD options from Fusion-io and company, and it’s the first time we’ve seen PCIe SSD become even remotely affordable. If all goes well, the RevoDrive will start shipping within a few months. In related news, the company also announced that the Vertex 2 line of solid state solutions will be slimmed down for the 1.8-inch form factor (like you’d find in an iPod classic), but details on pricing or availability were nowhere to be found. Lastly, and potentially most importantly, the company revealed a fresh-out-of-the-lab prototype that could significantly enhance transfer rates from PCIe devices. Codenamed HSDL (high speed data link), the solution combines an industry standard SAS connector with an OCZ-built PCIe board in order to enable transfer rates as high as 20Gbit/sec. The company said a final product is at least six months out, but it’s already toying with the idea of selling a single and quad-slot card in due time. Peek the gallery below for more of what’s to come.

We saw a lot of new technology demoed at Intel’s Computex keynote this afternoon, but the most impressive thing may have just been MeeGo running on a 10-inch Moorestown Quanta Redvale tablet. While the demo on stage was very brief, we caught up with some of the product managers right after the presser and convinced them to give us a peek at what is coming in 2011. To say we’re impressed with the “pre-alpha” version of the software is a huge understatement. So, what are you still doing up here? Hit the gallery for a ton of hands-on shots and then that read more button for some impressions and video.

Tablets may be attracting all of the attention right now, but it’s clear that Intel’s keeping a broad focus on mobile computing. During today’s PC Client keynote at Computex, the company took a moment to talk up Canoe Lake, an experimental platform that’ll enable 720p video playback on a machine that’s barely thicker than a couple of envelopes stacked together. We got a chance to peek the prototype on hand in Taipei, and we were told that Intel designed the device you’re peering at above completely in-house as a way to sell PC makers on the idea. They also affirmed that a GMA 3150 GPU was inside, and that the platform was capable of handling high-def multimedia. The machine was indeed functional, but few tricks were shown — the 10-inch display looked suitable enough, though it would certainly take us a few days to stop noticing that monster gap between the keyboard and LCD. But hey, you’ve got to cram those components / battery / fairy dust somewhere, right? Look for a plethora of Canoe Lake-based systems (probably fashioned like the gapless netbook at the tail end of the gallery below) to start shipping in “the second half of this year” from companies that Intel simply can’t name as of yet.

Microsoft isn’t kidding around about showing Apple it’s serious in regard to competing in the tablet space, and while most of the devices surrounding its Computex booth were locked down tight, we were able to spend a few exclusive minutes with a brand new LG that showed some serious promise. Boasting a 10.1-inch LED capacity touchscreen, the UX10 was one of the most solid tablets we’ve had the opportunity to touch. The prototype on the floor was equipped with an Intel Atom Z530 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing webcam, an SD card slot, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a 7200mAh battery and a micro-HDMI output. The entire front was smothered in glass, with an itty-bitty bezel and a striking pearlescent white paint job around back. Though, we couldn’t help but notice the similarities in the logo when thinking of a certain Streak. Microsoft representatives couldn’t comment on an estimated price, though they did affirm that the device will escape the prototype stage and ship to consumers at some point in the future. Hit up the gallery below for a closer look, and peek past the break if you’re a fan of videos.

ASUS‘ ARES line of gaming PCs has been kicking for a few years now, but regardless of how many iterations we see, we’re still a wee bit terrified when approaching a chassis this gargantuan. Just after the outfit’s press conference in Taipei, we daintily hurried over to the newest member of the family in order to snag a few shots and get the low-down on what users could expect when it ships between now and next century. Aesthetically, we’re told that the CG8490 was inspired by “ancient and modern armor of both Eastern and Western cultures,” likely a politically correct statement with no actual meaning. Regardless, this monster can overclock itself by as much as 20 percent without boiling over, and the six-core Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition CPU is suited for slicing up even the most complex of tasks. There’s also 12GB of DDR3 memory, 2TB of hard drive space, a standard DVD burner and a pair of overclocked ATI Radeon HD 5870 GPUs to handle DirectX 11 and Eyefinity duties. Mum’s the word on a price or release date, but we’re going with “too much” and “not soon enough.”

Oh, and be sure to peek the limited edition ARES GPU as well as the company’s Rampage III Extreme motherboard in the gallery below.

At long last, the ASUS Eee Pads have arrived, but unfortunately they’re just not working the way we’ve been imagining for all these months. We got a few minutes to toy around with the 10-inch EP101TC and 12-inch EP121, but both were barely working. And “barely” is being gracious. We can tell you that both models are incredibly well built — they’ve got aluminum edges and matte back covers — and neither was particularly heavy. The EP121 wasn’t booting at all, but it was being shown off with a super sleek keyboard docking station, which will be used to turn the tablet into an ultraportable laptop of sorts. An NVIDIA Tegra-powered EP101TC was powering on, but its Windows Embedded Compact 7-based interface was still noticeably buggy, and the touchscreen quite unresponsive. The UI certainly looked attractive enough, and our swipe motions across the capacitive touchscreen were handled admirably, but ASUS definitely has a ways to go in terms of functionality. We wish we had more impressions to share, but it looks as if we’ll have to wait for a less half-baked iteration to really dive in. ‘Til then, feel free to peruse the gallery below and peek the video just beyond the break.

It’s been a while since an ASRock piqued our interest (though we do love that name). That said, we are getting close to Computex, so we’ve been expecting to hear from a few old friends over the next week or so. For instance, TweakTown has just got a peek at ASRock’s new Vision 3D HTPC and we must admit it’s a pretty solid looking piece of kit. Inside its glossy aluminum housing one rests an Intel Core mobile processor and an NVIDIA GeForce GPU for 3D Vision graphics support, and a quick trip around the case finds four USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, dual-link DVI, 7.1 audio, and a Blu-ray drive. If you’re a 3D TV nut, however, you’ll have to shell out extra for NVIDIA’s 3D Vision kit (with glasses an appropriate software). No price yet, but they’re aiming for a July street date. Video after the break.

Microsoft’s Robbie Bach and J Allard leaving as part of broader shakeup; Xbox and Windows Phone teams now reporting directly to Ballmer http://lemenem.com/tech/microsofts-robbie-bach-and-j-allard-leaving-as-part-of-broader-shakeup-xbox-and-windows-phone-teams-now-reporting-directly-to-ballmer.php http://lemenem.com/tech/microsofts-robbie-bach-and-j-allard-leaving-as-part-of-broader-shakeup-xbox-and-windows-phone-teams-now-reporting-directly-to-ballmer.php#comments Tue, 25 May 2010 15:54:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/microsofts-robbie-bach-and-j-allard-leaving-as-part-of-broader-shakeup-xbox-and-windows-phone-teams-now-reporting-directly-to-ballmer.php

Well, it looks like the rumors were true. Not only is Microsoft’s J Allard now officially leaving the company, but so is Robbie Bach, President of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, amid what’s described as a broader restructuring that will effectively dissolve the division and give CEO Steve Ballmer more direct oversight of Microsoft’s consumer initiatives like Xbox and Windows Phone as of July.

Contrary to earlier reports, Allard says that he’s not leaving due to the cancellation of the Courier, but instead says that after nineteen years with the company, he simply wants to devote more time to his personal interests, “particularly adventure sports.” Allard also insists that he won’t be moving on to Apple, Google or any other Microsoft rivals — in fact, he’s staying on as an advisor to Steve Ballmer. Robbie Bach’s departure is equally curious — despite being just 48, his move is being described as a “retirement,” and he says that the decision was his own and that he wasn’t encouraged to leave. He’ll also apparently remain with Microsoft through the fall to aid in the transition.

When all’s said and done, mobile communications VP Andy Lees and interactive entertainment head Don Mettrick will each separately report to Ballmer — both have headed their divisions for some time now, so we’d assume that things will otherwise proceed as planned. Still, the loss of talent at the top is certainly noticeable — we’ll see how Microsoft responds now that Ballmer is firmly driving its mobile and gaming efforts.

We’ve got Ballmer’s full letter to the company and Microsoft’s official PR after the break, so take a peek.

So these three operating systems walk into a bar one night … alright, we’ll behave. With all the Steamy conversation about gaming on non-Windows desktop platforms going on, we thought you might care to peek at a little OpenGL performance comparison review. As the chief cross-platform API, it’s the only way we’re going to be seeing the latest games running natively on Mac OS and Linux, but how will that experience compare to the market leader? As it turned out, Windows maintains superiority in this field, with frame rates that were habitually above those on the latest Ubuntu and well ahead of what you might get on Mac OS 10.6.3. It’s still early days — after all, Steam’s non-DirectX cupboard is pretty bare right now — but at this point in time, OpenGL gaming is a crown that Microsoft retains with relative ease. Hit the source for all the line graph evidence, and let’s hope things improve for the rest of us in rapid fashion.

They might officially be targeting the lower end of business budgets, but a quick peek at the attractive stylings of Lenovo’s ThinkPad Edge and Dell’s Vostro V13 would suggest that both have no shortage of consumer market appeal. So, for the sake of differentiating between these two thin-and-light machines, Lenovo has provided us with one of its torture test videos. Subjecting the V13 and Edge to (hopefully identical) pressure at varying points across the LCD lid, this procedure assesses the robustness of each machine’s screen design. In spite of lacking all the fancy metals presented in its elder ThinkPad siblings, the Edge comes through the test unscathed and begging for more, whereas the V13 … well, it doesn’t. Skip past the break to see the hideously disfigured LCD that resulted from its visit to the Lenovo labs.

Panasonic is back with more information on its four-mic packing HDTV camera accessory, the TY-CC10W. Skype friends who would like to see your living room without actually visiting can take a peek in either 30fps VGA or 720p/22fps h.264 encoded streams, courtesy of any nearby video phone compatible VIERA Cast TVs this can mount on top of and plug into via USB. We’re (probably the only ones) waiting for a Chatroulette couch surfing client, but if you prefer your internet face-to-face meetings without the PC then ¥18,000 ($193) on June 11 will make it yours in Japan, no word on U.S. availability.

If you haven’t been paying attention over the last couple of years (we understand, we’ve been caught up in the Twilight series too — Bella’s life is so complex) Silicon Image has been pushing a 5-pin alternative to pared down HDMI jacks that are capable of outputting 1080p to connected displays while also providing power to the mobile device over a single cable. A 1.0 draft of the spec is due in the first half of the year, but an early peek is available now for $100. Since we’re not CE companies looking to implement the jack or build cables and docks we’ll pass but you might be interested in perusing the FAQ on the site if you’re still not sure why we need yet another type of connector to feed HD from our pocketable devices to the big screen.

Now that everyone and their grandpappy’s thoroughly caught up in tablet frenzy, it’s time for some of the lesser beasts to start coming out of the woodwork. Next up? The Archos 7 Home Tablet, which just garnered the last bit of FCC approval it needs to see a late April release. With a comparatively slow 600 MHz Rockchip RK2808 inside, don’t expect the Home Tablet to set speed records like its younger brother, but do look forward to a reasonably competitive price when the video-friendly Android device arrives stateside. See what it looks like with a paintjob (and sans “Ewe” logo) in our video from CeBIT after the break, or peek pics of an government-sponsored teardown at the source link.

Wowsa, looks like those FCC folks really take their jobs seriously. With the iPad they didn’t just bother to test out the radiation and maybe take a little peek for themselves under the covers, but instead disassembled the whole machine on camera. Unfortunately they took it upon themselves to cover over the specific chips, so we’ll have to wait for one of those pro bono teardowns to get the full lay of the land, but it’s still a unique look at the makeup of this thing. Check it out in the gallery below.

Quim Gil of Nokia’s Maemo team has dropped some knowledge on the folks chatting up the upcoming MeeGo release in the official Maemo forums, and it sounds like there are at least a couple critical points to be aware of for N900 owners and would-be ROM flashers when the first developer preview drops next week. To quote Gil, “nothing beautiful, stable or fully featured” will be a part of that initial release — and to be more blunt about it, “99% of you don’t want to install that release in your N900.” The good news, though, is that Nokia seems to be aware of the importance of a dual-boot solution to MeeGo devs working with N900s in the long term, and Gil reports that a proper setup for that “will come at some point” — it’s just not on their short-term radar. We can totally understand that; we’ve no doubt there’s still tons of reconciliation to manage between the legacy Maemo and Moblin ecosystems, and that’s presumably priority one as they march toward a May release of what’s being billed as a MeeGo 1.0 release.

Speculation had been building that the next cut of Maemo 5 — PR1.2 — might have MeeGo dual boot capability, but it’s not to be. That said, PR1.2’s still got plenty of tweaks that should be of interest to N900 owners, including a totally revamped landscape on-screen keyboard, onboard memory wipe capability (thank goodness), and an option to enable auto-rotation in the device’s settings. The forums are all abuzz over both topics, naturally — and since a proper PR1.2 release for N900 is still just a twinkle in Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo’s eye, you may as well have a peek, right?

[Thanks, Akinwale]

It’s the first poker table we’ve seen since the enviable X10 surfaced in 2008 that would fit appropriately in the new Aria (read: Vegas 2.0), and given that we just left the halls of CTIA ourselves, we couldn’t be drooling any more heavily over this gorgeous creation. Designed and built by students at the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Poker Surface magically combines a multitouch surface with an interactive mobile application that enables users to see their cards when they tilt the phone upwards towards their face. Then, users can complete a play by sliding in their bet(s) and flipping their hand once they’re all-in. There’s no word on when (or if) this gambler’s dream will be available for shipment to man caves everywhere, but you owe it to yourself to peek the video after the break, regardless.

LG Air Sync hands-on http://lemenem.com/tech/lg-air-sync-hands-on.php http://lemenem.com/tech/lg-air-sync-hands-on.php#comments Fri, 26 Mar 2010 00:50:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/lg-air-sync-hands-on.php

We got a peek today at the new “3-way” synchronization service from LG that the company is calling Air Sync; it’s only available on the GD880 Mini right now in the UK, but they’re looking to expand it across Europe and Asia before too long and — if we’re lucky — North America eventually. So what is it, exactly? Basically, it’s a synchronization service for text clipping, photos, videos, contacts, and the like that integrates with your PC using a downloadable client. After it’s installed, you get a few new context menu items that let you fast-track content to your phone via the cloud, and we were pretty amazed at just how quickly the transfers consistently happened — within a few seconds, a dialog pops up on LG’s demo Mini notifying you that the goods have been received. It sounds like LG will be looking at deploying this with a subscription model in most markets, so don’t expect gratis awesomeness — but if you transfer tons of pictures from your desktop to your mobile, this might be the way to go. Follow the break for video.

We’ve heard of soccer balls that play a tune when kicked, sure, and we’re pumped to see the World Cup in 3D, but it’s not often that someone comes up with a serious technological makeover for the sport that’s nearly as old as life itself. CTRUS, however, is just that — a theoretical revolution in soccer that begins with the all-important ball. To start with, a reinforced elastic structure means that CTRUS doesn’t require any air. (So long, pump.) Next, GPS and RFID chips keep track of the ball’s position at all times, and tell it to light up in different colors when it scores a goal or is accomplice to a nefarious violation. (Farewell, referee.) Last but not least, the sphere itself will report back with accelerometers that measure the ball’s kick force and travel speed, and a camera that could (with magical software stabilization, of course) actually film action from the ball’s own POV. Sadly, the ball is just a concept from an undercover marketing agency, but since we’re dreaming, we urge its creators to add a second camera. Just imagine just how immersive it would be to have your face booted in at 130km/h in glorious 3D. Or, just peek the concept videos after the break.

Dell Aero first hands-on! http://lemenem.com/tech/dell-aero-first-hands-on.php http://lemenem.com/tech/dell-aero-first-hands-on.php#comments Wed, 24 Mar 2010 03:15:57 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/dell-aero-first-hands-on.php

Here she is, folks — Dell’s first-ever Android device destined for a Stateside release, and AT&T’s second overall handset (the first being the Backflip) with a Google-based operating system. At CTIA’s MobileFocus event, we were able to brush up against a fully functional Aero (shown beside a Mini 3, just for your information), but we left without seeing the actual home screen. The closest we came to witnessing Android 1.5 boot up was the typical AT&T intro screen, and once that popped up, our presenter promptly popped the battery out in order to stop what would’ve otherwise been a truly momentous occasion. We begged and pleaded for a few interface shots, but Dell insisted that AT&T was holding an invisible gun to its head in order to keep the screen dimmed. We were told that the interface was still being tweaked, and the carrier simply wasn’t ready for the world at large to take a peek.

Outside of that, we learned that this will indeed be the planet’s lightest Android phone ever when it ships (believe us, it was light), and while v1.5 will be onboard, Dell seemed confident that 2.1 (and beyond) would be made available shortly after launch. We were also told that it would ship with a 5 megapixel camera (a step up from the Mini 3’s 3 megapixel shooter), an undisclosed amount of internal storage, a new color / design scheme (the one you see here will be the only shade available at launch) and a 2GB microSD card bundled in at purchase. You’ll also find a good deal of AT&T baked into the OS, but it’s not like you should be surprised to hear of carrier meddling. Finally, we were informed that pricing would be set by AT&T, and that it would be shipping “soon” — far sooner than “six months from now.” There’s also the possibility that Dell could arrange some sort of Aero / Mini 10 combo deal for those looking to really sink their teeth into a hefty AT&T contract, but there’s nothing substantial to go on just yet in that department. Enough chit-chat — give the gallery below a look to see what’s coming your way.

Samsung Galaxy S hands-on with video http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-galaxy-s-hands-on-with-video.php http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-galaxy-s-hands-on-with-video.php#comments Tue, 23 Mar 2010 22:27:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-galaxy-s-hands-on-with-video.php
Samsung dragged the Galaxy S out for us to gawk at this morning at CTIA and after the 30 minute video presentation, we were itching to actually check it out in our hands. Let’s just get this out of the way right off: the 4-inch WVGA 800 X 480 Super Amoled display on the Galaxy S is nothing short of stunning. Put side by side with an iPhone under some very harsh lighting, the difference between them — feel free to have a peek at the video after the break — is pretty astounding. Everything is bright and crisp, text legible, and the colors are jaw-droppingly beautiful. Touchscreen performance? This is another standout on this Android 2.1 device and coupled with Samsung’s 1GHz Application Processor, not only is it responsive but the UI is smooth and fast. The Galaxy S can shoot HD video at 720p using its 5 megapixel cam, plays it back with aplomb, and did we mention the display? The spec sheet lists this as triple-band HSPA device living in the 900 / 1800 / 1900 realm — and while US availability was announced for this year, no word on what carrier — so we hope to see that 900 swapped out with 850. This is one for the wish list friends, and we’re seriously hoping that wish gets filled long before this year’s holiday season.

AT&T’s Palm Pixi Plus and Pre Plus hands-on http://lemenem.com/tech/atts-palm-pixi-plus-and-pre-plus-hands-on.php http://lemenem.com/tech/atts-palm-pixi-plus-and-pre-plus-hands-on.php#comments Tue, 23 Mar 2010 19:15:45 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/atts-palm-pixi-plus-and-pre-plus-hands-on.php

We just spent a few fleeting moments with AT&T’s just-announced Pre Plus and Pixi Plus from Palm, and they’re pretty much exactly what you’d expect: GSM remixes of the models available on Verizon (we weren’t allowed to take a peek at the SIM slots, but rest assured, there’s an AT&T carrier logo up there at the top left). Both devices seemed relatively zippy — yes, even the Pixi — though that can naturally change pretty quickly once you’ve got a few cards chugging away. We were delighted to see that Palm loaded our very own Engadget app on their demo devices — a good way for booth stoppers-by to catch up on show news, eh? Check out the gallery below, and keep an eye out for more coverage throughout the day!

Curvy, sumptuous concept and prototype electric vehicles are definitely easy on the eyes, but if you’ve been searching for something a touch more “real,” fresh-out-of-bankruptcy Chrysler has one car that’s not going back to the drawing board. Our compatriots over at Autoblog report that the all-electric Fiat 500 EV — which saw a limited run of 100 in Europe and made a cameo at this year’s Detroit Auto Show — will actually be produced and sold in the US starting in 2012. Since the automaker’s not talking specs, it’s hard to say how it’ll compare to a Volt or a Leaf, but history (peek the ‘More Coverage’ link down below) tells us the original electric Fiat 500 got up to 120 miles on a charge. We’d caution you not to get too worked up by that hot hatch action, though — despite the fact that the Peapod made it briefly to market, this isn’t the first time Chrysler’s told us to expect a commercial vehicle we can charge. Here’s hoping for better results this go ’round.

New MacBook Pro, Air and Mac Pro pricing potentially leaked by Apple ads and online store (updated) http://lemenem.com/tech/new-macbook-pro-air-and-mac-pro-pricing-potentially-leaked-by-apple-ads-and-online-store-updated.php http://lemenem.com/tech/new-macbook-pro-air-and-mac-pro-pricing-potentially-leaked-by-apple-ads-and-online-store-updated.php#comments Wed, 17 Mar 2010 11:33:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/new-macbook-pro-air-and-mac-pro-pricing-potentially-leaked-by-apple-ads-and-online-store-updated.php

Could this be another example of online advertising presaging the onset of a hardware upgrade from Cupertino? Apple’s ads on Australian tech pub PC Authority have been spotted displaying some rather peculiar price tags for its flagship mobile and desktop computers. Whereas Cupertino’s Aussie online store lists the most affordable versions of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Pro at A$1,599, A$1,999 and A$3,599, respectively, the above, official-looking ads would seem to disagree. Clicking on them still leads to the currently priced (and specced) machines, but looking at them suggests that — in the absence of some major conspiracy or a splendidly random price hike — we’re getting an early peek at the pricing of the newly updated models of each of those series. The MacBook Air has jumped by A$400 so that what used to be its costliest base price is now its lowest, while the MBP has suffered a A$300 bump in cost of entry. Then again, considering the expectation that the mobile computers will get Core i7 CPUs while the Mac Pro will get all dressed up with Core i7-980X regalia, this development is perhaps not all that surprising. The major thing to take away here is that the long-awaited upgrades might finally be arriving. We’re putting our piggy banks on alert, just in case.

[Thanks, Matthew]

Update: We’ve come across some other pricing inconsistencies contained within Apple’s own New Zealand site. Find out what’s happening after the break [Thanks, ScottNYC].

Update 2: The prices above have been corroborated by Apple’s Australia site, which now suffers from the same schizophrenic pricing as its New Zealand compatriot. You’ll find screenshot evidence after the break.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: skyscrapers, combustible ice, and coffee-powered cars http://lemenem.com/tech/inhabitats-week-in-green-skyscrapers-combustible-ice-and-coffee-powered-cars.php http://lemenem.com/tech/inhabitats-week-in-green-skyscrapers-combustible-ice-and-coffee-powered-cars.php#comments Mon, 15 Mar 2010 20:46:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/inhabitats-week-in-green-skyscrapers-combustible-ice-and-coffee-powered-cars.php The Week in Green is a new item from our friends at Inhabitat, recapping the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us.

This week Inhabitat took a peek into the future of our built environment by showcasing the most incredible designs from the 2010 eVolo Skyscraper Competition. From water purifying buildings to cities stacked on stilts and self-sufficient underwater skyscrapers, there’s no shortage of futuristic thinking on tap.

Alternative energy was also a hot topic this week as China launched plans to tap “combustible ice” as an energy source and researchers at MIT discovered a new way to produce electricity by sending thermopower waves through carbon nanotubes.

We also saw several exciting advances in efficient transportation as South Korea rolled out an EV that is recharged by electrified roads and researchers at UT Dallas revealed a heat-scavenging tailpipe that may one day help power cars. And if you think your Prius gets good mileage, get a load of this super-efficient gas engine that gets 98 MPG. Finally, if you rely on that morning cup of coffee to get your engine running, you won’t want to miss this coffee-powered car that gets 56 espressos per mile

Enjoy your CES peek at Samsung’s ultrathin 9000 series LED-lit LCD HDTV, with its touchscreen, video displaying remote control (also available as a $350 add-on for the 7000, 8000,and 750 series televisions) and 3D capability? That’s good, because bringing the 55-inch UN55C9000 home in April will cost you a cool $6,999 (the thrifty can slum it with the 46-inch version for $5,999.) Still, if you’re just looking to jump in on 3D without spending the max money, the cheapest model available at first will be the standard LCD LN46C750 available in May. In between, there’s all manner of LED (most of them listed above, both with and without 3D capabilities) or old-school CCFL backlit LCDs plus a healthy lineup of plasmas arriving over the next few months, so with a note that grabbing 3D Blu-ray player and display at the same time will net a couple free pairs of active shutter glasses and a copy of the Monsters vs. Aliens 3D Blu-ray, check Samsung’s site for each type to see what your budget can handle.

Spring Design’s Alex e-reader has certainly had one of the more interesting product launches in recent years and, with an actual release now seemingly imminent, it’s finally turned up in the FCC’s hands. There’s not many surprises left at this point, but the agency has at least treated us to a peek inside the device, and offered us our first look at the device’s user manual. Head on past the break for a few more exciting images, and hit up the link below for the complete rundown, FCC style.

Penguin UK unveiled a peek at its upcoming plans for iPad formatted e-books, and we have to say, they’re really taking the whole interactive experience trip and running with it. If you take a look at the big P’s video presentation (which is embedded after the break), you’ll spy a lot of noisy interactive games targeted at children, the innards of the human body laid bare on the screen taking text books to the next, less boring level, plus a vampire novel with an “online community for vampire lovers” built right in. On the whole, it seems like Penguin’s vision for its books moving forward is less about… books, and more about… not books. Still, we seriously can’t wait to see the company’s iPad version of The Diary of Virginia Woolf. Full, semi-educational video is after the break.

Paging all butterfly-admiring netbook lovers! With spring upon us, HP’s officially launching the Mini 210 Vivienne Tam edition that it previewed back at September’s Fall Fashion Week, and, well, it sure is unique looking. We actually got to take a peek at it a few weeks ago, and while the butterfly adorned cover may only appeal to a certain sex type, the gold covered keyboard is what you’d expect kings and queens to type on. Okay so, the design wasn’t really in line with our tastes, but at least we’re comfortable with the internal specs which are identical to the Mini 210 we recently reviewed (sans the Broadcom Crystal HD). And apparently the Mini should sound as good as it looks — HP’s updated Vivienne’s netbook with Beats by Dr. Dre audio software, which to date has only been found in the company’s Envy line. Interesting move, but of course it’s still very hard for us to understand why anyone would spend $600 on a netbook that’s got an extremely frustrating touchpad and only a three-cell battery — but we’d guess that it probably has to do with that whole ‘beauty is pain’ thing. The full press release is after the break.

Today, all that changes. After sticking to the relatively boring optical media market for years, said outfit has finally realized that there’s money to be made in flash storage. The PX-64M1S (64GB) and the PX-128M1S (128GB) are the company’s first-ever SSDs, both of which arrive in 2.5-inch form factors and use an integrated SATA II interface. As for transfers, you’ll see sequential read rates as high as 110MB/sec and 130MB/sec, while sequential write rates hit 65MB/sec and 70MB/sec (respectively in both cases). Both units can be snapped up now for $225 (64GB) / $400 (128GB). In related news, OCZ is using CeBIT as a springboard for the launch of its external Enyo USB 3.0 SSD; unfortunately, details surrounding capacity, price and pretty much anything else are being left out, but you can bet we’ll be hounding its booth representatives for those and reporting back. Finally, Team Xtreem is dishing out a 250GB Xtreem-S1 SSD with a Sandforce processor and read / write rates of around 260MB/sec, though models will be available in 60GB and 120GB as well. Peek the source links for all the nitty-gritty details, and stay tuned for more from Hannover.

It’s a relatively inexpensive (around $45) option for boosting performance in older machines, but it still requires the purchase of a decidedly not inexpensive SSD. For those with one already on hand (not to mention a traditional HDD), it allows you to have a RAID-type setup that provides peace of mind and a performance boost when it comes time to boot or load an application. Critics over at HardwareCanucks found that this little doohickey actually provided a noticeable increase in speed when coming from an older HDD-based setup, but those already using a WD Black Edition or Raptor probably “won’t see much of a difference in terms of load times.” They also point out that users should certainly use second-generation SSDs if picking one up, and if you’ve been searching for the next big breath of life to send to your aging desktop, you owe it to yourself to peek the full writeup.

Hello Games could be pulling a fast one on us all, but the first trailer for the studio’s upcoming digitally distributed Joe Danger features PlayStation 3 button commands on screen during the map creation showcase (as pictured above). As such, we’re totally breaking out the jump to conclusions mat and getting our hop on — the game is clearly coming to PS3 (via the PlayStation Network)! Alright, alright, it helps that during the game’s preview on the latest GameTrailers TV, it gets a “PSN” tagged lower third. And yes, we’ve followed up with the developers to see if it’s heading to Xbox Live and Steam as well.

We’ve also embedded the whole trailer after the break and we suggest you give it a peek. Mr. Danger’s introductory role looks to be quite intriguing; the gameplay appears to be a mélange of Motocross Maniacs and Trials HD, with a bit of LittleBigPlanet lite thrown in for good measure. If it’s even half as awesome as what that sounds like, we’re ready to give it a try.

The TrickleStar line of products does a good job of killing vampire power drain already, but all of those still require you to lift a finger and flip a toggle switch to “off” in order to stop the flow of energy when nothing is there to be charged. Conor Klein’s Leech Plug, however, does the dirty work for you. Thanks to an integrated timer circuit and a mysterious array of “electromechanics” within, his AC outlet physically ejects the charging cord when the device on the other end is done charging; granted, that leaves you with quite a mess in your dining room floor, but hey, at least you’re doing your small part to keep this fragile planet from imploding on itself, right? Peek the video after the break.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Look, that BOSS TU-2 has served you (and eleventy billion other guitarists) well, but isn’t it time for something a bit different in the pedal board mix? Stimmmopped is that very thing, which is a darling little contraption that uses LEDs rather than a microphone in order to tell you if your strings are tuned as they should be. Put simply, the device illuminates a string with a pair of lights, both of which are flashing at the frequency that the string should be vibrating at if it’s in tune; if you’re off, the illuminated part of the string will appear to be moving (thanks, stroboscopic effect!), and if you’re on the money, the lights will appear fixed. Have a peek at the source link for more, but don’t go building one yourself without a steady hand and a few vacation days to spare.

Thought your decision was made when Nikon’s P100 superzoom hit online stores yesterday? You might wanna give Olympus’ offering a quick peek as well, as today the SP-800UZ has debuted on Amazon with a similar shipping schedule of three to five weeks. It brings quite the punchy résumé too, with its 30x optical zoom and $349 price both being that little bit better than Nikon’s hardware. Additional enticements include a 14 megapixel sensor with dual image stabilization, AF tracking, 720p video recording, face detection and a 3-inch LCD. Just to make sure you’re completely comfortable with your purchase, the above price also includes a spare high-capacity battery, mini tripod, lens cleaning kit, and a USB card reader. Man, wish mobile operators treated us like this.

[Thanks, Ron]

Not even a fortnight after we saw Android 2.0.1 slapped onto Sony Ericsson’s all-but-forgotten Xperia X1, along comes a port that makes the other look like child’s play. A dedicated coder over at XDA Developers has managed to stuff Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 onto an X1, and while the functionality is limited (as you’d expect), the amount of fun to be had is restrained only by your imagination (and available vacation time). Go on and peek that source link to join the discussion — but be warned, you’ll be sucking down over a gigabyte worth of data before the first installation process.

We were all over Toshiba’s drop dead thin and gorgeous TG01 last year, so naturally a chance to peek at the rumored TG02 first hand was something we couldn’t pass up. Very little is new here, the touchscreen technology has seen resistive swapped with capacitive, the device has become a wee bit smaller while retaining the monster 4.1-inch display, and some 3D touches have been added to the SPB Mobile Shell-skinned Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Like its older sibling, the handset is still a thing of beauty and the 1GHz Snapdragon does make it all purr along very nicely — and while the UI isn’t really a custom one — we like the ability to flip between pages kinda like iPhone and Android do now. All in, this is a pretty decent effort, and removing some of the pain that was the resistive display can only make the TG02 better. Follow on for a tour and a gallery of shots.

Apple locks down iPhone trademark, includes ‘electronic games’ category http://lemenem.com/tech/apple-locks-down-iphone-trademark-includes-electronic-games-category.php http://lemenem.com/tech/apple-locks-down-iphone-trademark-includes-electronic-games-category.php#comments Sun, 14 Feb 2010 17:29:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/apple-locks-down-iphone-trademark-includes-electronic-games-category.php

Patently Apple has sniffed out the latest, and most comprehensive, trademark registration acquired by Apple on the subject of the iPhone and we thought we’d have a peek. Already entitled to use the brand name under international categories 9 (mobile phone and digital audio player) and 38 (electronic data-transmitting device), Apple has now added category 28, which reads shortly and sweetly as a ‘handheld unit for playing electronic games.’ Before you freak out and start fusing this into your iPhone 4G fantasies, note that Apple filed the claim for this trademark way back in December 2007. So nothing necessarily new on the tech front, but this document provides the broadest brand protection yet — including the bitten apple graphic alongside the name — and could strengthen Cupertino’s case in its forthcoming battle for the iPad moniker.

Remember those mind-melting Recon Instruments goggles that we caught wind of late last year? Admit it — you never, ever expected those things to actually make it to market. Despite your pessimism, it seems as if those very specs are indeed making a beeline to the consumer realm, with Zeal Optics jumping in, working a bit of magic and relabeling ‘em Transcend. Deemed the planet’s first GPS and sensor-laden ski goggles, these things are purportedly capable of logging speed, altitude, temperature and time details, and the side-mounted toggle switches will enable you to view said data in real time (or not, if you’re paying attention to the 50 foot drop ahead of you). Peek the read link for further details on the $350+ wearables (demoed after the break), and get ready to hit the slopes with a whole new mindset this October.

DIY photog creates laser trigger for remote DSLR snapping http://lemenem.com/tech/diy-photog-creates-laser-trigger-for-remote-dslr-snapping.php http://lemenem.com/tech/diy-photog-creates-laser-trigger-for-remote-dslr-snapping.php#comments Mon, 08 Feb 2010 21:39:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/diy-photog-creates-laser-trigger-for-remote-dslr-snapping.php

There’s just no two ways about it: the integrated self-timer is easily one of the most amazing technologies to ever be invented. Yeah, we said it. Unfortunately, beeping for ten seconds while a shooter races to get in position isn’t always ideal or fun, and that’s where isharq comes in. His Arduino-based mod is amongst the most flexible out there for DSLRs, enabling it to morph from a basic laser trigger hack to something that senses heat, movement or sound (just to name a few) and then makes your camera react accordingly. As it stands, his setup triggers his DSLR to snap a shot whenever a laser beam is broken, and if you’re eager to see more, be sure to peek the in-action video just past the break. Oh, and the source link holds all the secrets to recreating something like this in your own laboratory.

[Thanks, Simon]

A serious upgrade from the 8 or 9 viewing angle lenticular displays we saw at CES this year, the company claims it’s ready to refit regular displays for 3D and also assist in 2D-to-3D image conversion. We’ve got all of the usual questions lined up like how will this affect resolution, what’s necessary to render the necessary 64 different frames for each viewing angle and of course, how much does it cost, but founder Armin Grasnick says his company can handle screens of up to 100-inches quickly and inexpensively, likely by not wasting precious R&D funds on website design. The current state of 3D is glasses all the way, but we could get a peek at the next step March 2 in Germany.

We let you in on one of Klipsch’s little secrets when we revealed the Image X10i to the world back in December, and now that the company’s highest-end iPhone-friendly earbuds will be shipping en masse within a month, we figured we’d grab a set and let you know if they were indeed worth their weight in gold (or just $349.99, really). The X10 has sat atop the company’s most recent lineup of earbuds for awhile now, and with the raging success of the S4i came a stellar idea: add the same iPod / iPhone remote to the flagship set of ‘buds. The X10i is just that — a set of X10 earbuds with the iPhone remote that we highlighted in our S4i review. Needless to say, the X10i isn’t aimed at the budget-minded listener, but we were most curious to see if these really were worth the $250 leap from the aforementioned S4i. Read on to peek our conclusion.

Color us (not) surprised, but Apple is definitely launching a tablet tomorrow. At least, according to the CEO of one of the planet’s most noted book publishers. In a recent interview on CNBC, Terry McGraw (head honcho of McGraw-Hill, naturally), very openly admitted that books from his company would be coming to an Apple tablet “tomorrow,” and he also confirmed that his company has “worked with Apple for quite awhile.” As he dug the hole deeper, we also learned that the “tablet will be based on the iPhone operating system,” and he noted that said books would be “transferable.” We’re assuming an updated iPhone OS is also in the works, one that presumably supports textbooks in the way that the mythical tablet might. Obviously we’re not taking any of this as gospel until Stevie J confirms or denies it on stage tomorrow — for all we know, Mr. McGraw may have just seen something speculative — but it’s not too often you see a CEO blow this much pointed smoke. Peek the full quote after the break along with the interview clip.

Sony doesn’t seem to have gotten around to an official announcement for this one just yet, but its WHG-SLK1 iPod shelf system was on hand at CES 2010, and the folks at Sony Insider managed to get a quick peek at it. Designed as much for video as for audio, this one packs a fairly large 9-inch screen front and center, and promises a full 100W of power, along with an iPod dock, a built-in DVD player, a USB port, and accommodations for both Memory Sticks and SD cards. You’ll also get video in/out ports to connect other devices or connect the system itself to a larger screen, but there’s unfortunately no indication of a price or release date.

LG launched another Rumor set on Sprint yesterday: the LG Rumor Touch. As you all likely sussed from the name, this iteration brings touchscreen — resistive — to the mix and it also comes loaded with a pretty stellar keypad. The touchscreen is pretty sharp as well, both with the haptic feedback when using it, response to your finger’s pokes, and the quality of the display itself. The feel of the set is a bit light, — but it doesn’t extend to cheap — the slide is solid with nary a bit of rattle, and the fit where the device’s various edges meet is good. A standout, while trivial, are the themes the Touch supports, whereby, depending on season, the UI changes to winter, turkeys for thanksgiving, and, well, you get the idea. While we covered off all the specs yesterday, we learned today the Touch Rumor should ship for mid-March, but still no word on pricing. So with that, why don’t you drop below and have a peek at the gallery and watch the video walkthrough we put together with one of LG’s finest.

Shuttle’s press announcement of its new mobile platform was accompanied by a booth’s worth of demonstration units and we went over for a quick peek. What we saw was a selection of rather conventional looking machines — certainly the new internal layout is not going to affect the way machines will look on the outside. There was an Atom N450 netbook in among the chunkier devices, which — though they sported Shuttle branding and model names — seem to be just sample machines to entice OEMs into picking up the Shuttle design. This was demonstrated best by the ridiculously creaky keyboard on one of the laptops and its hapless monitor frame. Closing and opening the lid led to the display casing splitting open (see here), which was as damaging to our love of Shuttle as it was to the unfortunate plastic.

LG’s 6.9mm HDTV stole the show, but a bevy of the company’s other new wares were on display (and in action) at its press conference. The Mobile DTV-enabled DVD player was actually streaming live television via the temporary tower established here in Vegas, and the video quality was surprisingly good with no perceived lag or pixelation. We also witnessed a live Skype call, and while the quality was subpar due to the awful WiFi connection, the user interface and actual usability seemed satisfactory. Finally, the smattering of Infinia LCDs were downright dazzling, but given the competition, it’ll still be tough for these to break through in a world full of me-too sets. Have a peek below, won’t you?

Spring Design was poised to take the official wraps off of its dual-screen, Android-based ereader this Thursday, but we were able to catch an up close and personal glance at the device today here at CES Unveiled. Highlighted over at the Marvell booth (understandable given the choice of processor), the reader was intensely thin and remarkably snappy. We had some gripes with the speed of the Nook, but every action we took on the Alex was relatively lag free. We even downloaded a book and watched it open up immediately, and the touchscreen response was also satisfactory. Spring Design also opted to expose the microSD card slot on the rear; you simple mash your card into the slot and listen for the click, and mash it once more to eject it. You better hope nothing pushes it by mistake, but hey, at least you’re not stuck removing some rear cover just to swap cards. We’ve gotta say — we’re digging this thing based on our brief time with it, and we’d invite you to have a peek at the gallery below till our demo video is prepped.

We’ve gotta say — we’re digging this thing based on our brief time with it, and we’d invite you to have a peek at the gallery below till our demo video is prepped.

Update: Video is after the break!

When we walked the sound-filled halls of Klipsch’s Indianapolis headquarters last month, the company insisted that it was always looking at possible expansions into new markets. Today at CES, it’s proving that those words aren’t being uttered carelessly. The all-new LightSpeaker is a unique and potentially game-changing device in the whole home audio market, as unlike similar contraptions, this one requires no external wiring or power. The device is designed to fit into normal 5- to 6-inch light recesses, which enables existing homeowners to easily retrofit these into their ceilings and walls. We were granted some hands-on time with the light, and put simply, you just screw it into a conventional fixture, dial up the desired zone on the bundled remote, and listen. A full-range driver sits just beneath the LED light, and it receives signals via a 2.4GHz base station that can be plugged into just about any source.

Klipsch plans to ship these soon in two main packages: a kit that includes a base station and two LightSpeakers for around $600 and a single LightSpeaker by its lonesome for around $250. The bundled controller allows users to control two zones and two sources, and you can also adjust lighting brightness and volume via the main station or the smaller remote. Each zone can easily support four LightSpeakers, and when we asked if these could withstand the elements, we were told that they’d do fine in a covered patio but probably not within an unshielded pool deck. In other words, some humidity shouldn’t be an issue, but you probably wouldn’t want ‘em to get rained on all night. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see a bundle in the future that includes a wireless subwoofer to really round out the audio, but don’t say you heard it from us. Peek the gallery for a closer look!

Egad. We had such high hopes for the Camangi WebStation, but as with a few other non-phone devices that have attempted to use Android, it seems as if this 7-inch slate falls a bit short in practice. The gang over at Laptop was able to corral a unit for a brief sit-down, and while they admired the exceptionally light and portable hardware, they kvetched about the lowly 800 x 480 screen resolution, sluggish performance when opening applications and the limited / confined feel of the Camangi Marketplace. They also barked about the resistive screen’s inability to accurately recognize finger presses, and while they’re still holding out some hope that this thing could be useful in at least a few scenarios, it’s fairly clear this piece isn’t for everyone. Peek the source link for the full skinny.

Peek devices are usually quite resolute in their single-purpose ways, but it looks like things are starting to change — the company is beta testing Facebook integration called PeekSocial. Once you install the app on your Facebook account, you’ll be able to update your status easily, and you’ll also receive periodic emails that pull content from your newsfeed. Yeah, it’s a little hacky — how about enabling support for a real Facebook app, Peek?

[Thanks, Devon]

It’s Christmas day, so we’re asking you to go a little easy on Peek here, but we’ve got a sneaking suspicion that our request will be cutely ignored in comments below. This week’s episode of How Would You Change features Peek’s latest handheld — you know, the one that only does Twitter. We didn’t find the creature too incredibly useful / valuable during our time with it, but that’s not to say it couldn’t be molded into a pristine object of desire. Speaking of which, how would you go about tweaking or overhauling the TwitterPeek? Make the screen resolution higher? Change the user interface? Add support for apps, email and calling? Make Peek pay you to use it? Sound off below!

Well, it looks like Art Lebedev has more than the rather ingenious Transparentius concept in store for us today — it’s also introduced this so-called Fleximus concept for a flexible digital camera. Not exactly anything new there, per se, but Art Lebedev seems to be pitching this one specifically to photographers, not just folks that want to peek in hard-to-see places. To that end, the Fleximus comes equipped with a proper viewfinder on one end of camera, which can also be detached and replaced with a 3-inch LCD module (check it out after the break). Of course, this is still just a concept so there’s nothing in the way of specs, but you can get an exhaustive look at the design process at the link below.

We weren’t waiting on too many more details surrounding Seagate’s 7mm thin laptop hard drive, but one critical tidbit has just now been unearthed by the outfit itself. The Momentus Thin will make its official unveiling at CES here in just a few weeks, where it’ll be available in 160GB and 250GB capacities and with 8MB of cache, a 5400RPM spin speed and a SATA 3Gbps interface. We’re also told that it’ll be far less expensive than similarly sized 1.8-inch HDD options, which means this bugger could soon be planted into Atom D410 / D510-based netbooks. The drive is slated to ship to OEM and integrator partners next month, though specific price points have yet to be mentioned. Have a peek at the first press shots below.

Atom-based PsiXpda UMPC gets handled on video http://lemenem.com/tech/atom-based-psixpda-umpc-gets-handled-on-video.php http://lemenem.com/tech/atom-based-psixpda-umpc-gets-handled-on-video.php#comments Sun, 13 Dec 2009 21:12:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/atom-based-psixpda-umpc-gets-handled-on-video.php

Remember that retro-looking PsiXpda UMPC we spotted earlier this month? Turns out it looks just as old school in person. That said, we’re still curiously attracted to the device, which sort of resembles an enlarged Touch Pro2 with a pinch of 1997 mixed in for good measure. The device was whipped out in the wild over at the LeWeb conference in Paris, and we were told that it was rocking Bluetooth, 3G WWAN, 1GB of RAM and a 16GB SSD, and we also learned that Windows XP was chosen due to its ease of integration within a corporate environment (though Ubuntu, Jolicloud and a host of other Linux-based operating systems can and will work). The QWERTY keyboard underneath is backlit in nature, the CPU is a 1.1GHz Atom and the removable battery is good for 2.5 hours of usage (with WiFi on) or 4 hours if using it offline. Hop on past the break for a peek of it in action, but keep the £500 price tag in mind before getting too excited.

[Thanks, Charbax]

Samsung TL225 / ST550 review roundup: some smiles, some frowns http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-tl225-st550-review-roundup-some-smiles-some-frowns.php http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-tl225-st550-review-roundup-some-smiles-some-frowns.php#comments Sat, 12 Dec 2009 22:01:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-tl225-st550-review-roundup-some-smiles-some-frowns.php

Incredulously enough, no other major camera maker has come out and mimicked Samsung’s front-facing LCD approach found on the TL225 (or ST550 in some areas), so if you’re in the market, it’s either this one or the lesser-specced TL220 (ST500). If you’re considering picking up the former as a bang-up gift for your special someone, you’d probably do yourself a solid by taking a peek at a few reviews around the web. The long and short of it is this: the camera’s dual LCDs are well implemented, and they actually do come in handy for those looking to handle the “self-portrait” duties in the relationship. Beyond that, however, there wasn’t a lot of praise to go around. For starters, the camera relies only on microSD memory, so those spare SD cards you’ve got laying around are no good here. Then there’s the so-so image quality coupled with the staggeringly weak battery life; Photography Blog was only able to squeeze out around 100 shots while making heavy use of the touchscreen. Everyone seemed to agree that the cam wasn’t for everyone, so be sure and take a look around before committing.

Although the bright and cheerful Peek (and its somewhat ill-advised Twitter-centric brother) has long been a source of fascination for us, we realize that for most Americans a dedicated email device doesn’t make too much sense. Now, in the same way that Hendrix had to go to London to find critical acceptance, it looks like FON CEO Martin Varsavsky thinks the device might be a winner overseas — nothing less than a heroic “pan-European email machine that avoids [data] roaming charges.” According to the man’s blog, the PeekFon will cost €99 (roughly $145), including six months unlimited service, courtesy of a new MVNO called Spotnik. After that, you’ll need to pay as you go to the tune of €12.90 (roughly $19) a month. Sick of those insane roaming charges? Curious? European? Varsavsky shares his feelings on the subject after the break.

We’ve been waiting an awful long time for this day to come, and now we’re doing our darndest to rush away 2010. Today, Sir Richard Branson officially took the wraps off of a spacecraft that we initially peeked back in June of 2008: the SpaceShipTwo. Designed to hold six passengers and two pilots, this magnificent craft will reportedly be ready to ship wealthy tourists into space as early as 2011. Reportedly, the craft will be taken up to launch altitude by the WhiteKnightTwo, after which the 2.5 hour tour will take patrons high enough to experience around 5 minutes of weightlessness. Of course, the ship still has an awful lot of regulatory passing to do, and the Spaceport America in New Mexico still has to be built, but it’s nothing short of fantastic to see the wheels turning in the right direction. Just think — you can finally tell you kid that an aeronautical engineering degree isn’t required to leave the atmosphere. Future, we heart thee.

P.S. – Peek that MSNBC link for the unveiling shots!

The projector phone mishmash idea has been around (and even demonstrated) for quite some time now, but only recently have we seen one of these two-pronged, hunchbacked monsters land on a major US carrier. LG’s eXpo is carrying that crown (or burden, depending on perspective), and while we’re itching to get one into our own labs for testing, we’ll happily pass along what looks to be the world’s first real good look at this handset in action. Make no mistake — the DLP-based beamer affixed on the back adds quite the bulge, but the actual video performance looks about as good as any dedicated pico projector that we’ve seen to date. Have a peek past the break to see for yourself.

Ever heard of Cyber Wednesday? Yeah, same here. But seriously — when’s the last time you heard us kvetch over a deal? Effective today only, Peek’s email-only handhelds are being offered up with lifetime service for half of the normal price. Buy any Peek handheld and you’ll get service for just $9.99 per month for as long as you keep the device, which is certainly a bargain compared to the $19.99 that’s typically charged. In other news, Wally World has announced that from December 5th through the 12th (while supplies last, obviously), a $50 gift card will be handed over when you purchase a Wii console in-store. Just think — Walmart is actually incenting you to buy a Wii. Man, how the times have changed.

The path back to LCD leadership for Sharp begins at its just opened Sakai City manufacturing facility. Being a 10th generation facility means it can roll out more and bigger displays, producing six 60-inch LCDs from each glass substrate, 60% more than older 8g facilities. Check out the pics for a peek at where 72,000 substrates per month will be made, delivering those slim LED backlit televisions getting so much love, along with solar panels (also being installed on the roofs for that extra green vibe that’s in vogue these days) and a few of the more than 100,000 energy efficient LEDs lighting the factory itself. Whether your closest HDTV purchase is a turkey fueled memory from last weekend or yet to come, bargain hunters and AV fans alike can appreciate an eyeful of the robots and testing equipment slicing, dicing and stamping screens headed for shelves nearby, whether bearing an Aquos brand or any number of other nameplates.

Of course, Mr. Miller is known ’round these circles as a “professional skater,” so there’s a solid chance he could’ve handled just about anything the guys and gals at Activision threw his way. The reality of the matter is that not everyone feels safe and secure on something resembling a skateboard, and now we’re being let in on the world of prototypes that were used to land on the final design. Within the read link you’ll find randomly placed arcade buttons, trucks with no wheels, a terrifying amount of sensors and a comical amount of duct tape. Yeah — even the whiz kids that make your dreams a reality start with duct tape. Go on, have a peek if you’re in disbelief.

Dragon Skin body armor gains piezoelectric sensors, keeps bullet-stopping abilities http://lemenem.com/tech/dragon-skin-body-armor-gains-piezoelectric-sensors-keeps-bullet-stopping-abilities.php http://lemenem.com/tech/dragon-skin-body-armor-gains-piezoelectric-sensors-keeps-bullet-stopping-abilities.php#comments Wed, 25 Nov 2009 14:42:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/dragon-skin-body-armor-gains-piezoelectric-sensors-keeps-bullet-stopping-abilities.php

This Dragon Skin armor has been knocking about since 2007, but now that piezoelectrics and intelligence have been thrown into the mix we couldn’t stop ourselves from taking a peek at it. The armor’s strength is derived from a reptilian arrangement of overlapping ceramic and titanium composite discs, which simultaneously block incoming rounds and dissipate the impact to a wider area. What’s interesting about the new design is the two piezoelectric sensors attached to each end — one of them transfers a low voltage of power through the armor in the form of vibration, which the other picks up, and the reported energy loss is interpreted as armor degradation. Gnarlier still is the ability of these sensors to generate electricity from bullet impacts, which can then themselves give you an indication of what sort of bullet hit you. Capable of being applied to soldiers and vehicles alike, this could make the real act of soldiering a whole lot more like a video game (minus the whole “infinite respawn” thing), with HUDs showing you how much “shield” you have left. You can see an old(ish) video of the original armor after the break.

A free PDA that came with a magazine subscription in 2002? An early Peek prototype? No, this is the humbly named USB Wireless Handheld Keyboard and Touchpad that’s now available from USB Geek, and it just might be the sort of device you never knew you were looking for. As the folks at CrunchGear have noted, while the device is simply being marketed as an all-in-one wireless touchpad and keyboard, it actually has all the makings of an ideal HTPC controller — not to mention an entirely reasonable price of $62. No multitouch, no LCD — just a plain old trackpad, a wireless USB dongle, and a QWERTY keypad that should be adequate enough for tweeting your reaction to the TV show remake du jour. Video after the break.

Verizon’s Samsung Omnia II launching December 2 for $200 http://lemenem.com/tech/verizons-samsung-omnia-ii-launching-december-2-for-200.php http://lemenem.com/tech/verizons-samsung-omnia-ii-launching-december-2-for-200.php#comments Fri, 20 Nov 2009 18:15:37 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/verizons-samsung-omnia-ii-launching-december-2-for-200.php

It may no longer be the first to launch in North America (that distinct honor now belongs to Bell), but we can finally say with some confidence that Verizon’s version of the Samsung Omnia II isn’t that far off. No, seriously: we’ve managed to get a peek at the carrier’s launch pack for the phone, and the big details here are that it’ll be launching in all channels (meaning telesales, online, and in-store) on December 2 for $199.99 on contract after a $100 mail-in rebate. That pricing puts it solidly in the upper echelon of Verizon’s offerings these days, yes — but when you consider that it’s got a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display, 8GB of internal storage plus microSD expansion, 5 megapixel cam, and WinMo 6.5 Professional (allaying earlier concerns that 6.1 would be on shipping units), we think they can justify the outlay. Especially if you can resist the pull of a Droid Eris for a Benjamin cheaper once you set foot in the store, of course.

[Thanks, WC]

Even if you don’t have a favored fighter in the browser wars, you have to admit Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has been looking mighty unfit over the last few years. Younger and fitter contenders like Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome have arguably overtaken the old stalwart, and now Microsoft is making some much-needed noise about fighting back. The software giant has been giving developers and curious journalists a very early peek into its IE 9 progress at PDC, with its stated ambitions including faster Javascript (see table above), HTML5 support, and hardware acceleration for web content. By harnessing DirectX and your graphics processor, the new browser will offer improvements in text readability and video performance, as well as taking some of the load off the CPU. Development has only just got under way, mind you, so there’s still plenty of time to screw it all up. Or make it awesome.

Right on cue, T-Mobile’s newest BlackBerry is now on sale for those who covet. Starting at $199.99 on an Even More plan (which entails a 2-year contract, just so you know), the Bold 9700 can be ordered up from the carrier’s website or be snagged in-store if you prefer to roll that way. It’s also available for $449.99 on an Even More Plus Plan if you’re no fan of attached strings, but something tells us you may want to have a peek at our review before laying down that much cheddar in a moment of weakness.

It may be half a decade old, but don’t lie — you still whip your Treo 650 out from time to time, toss on some jean shorts and pretend that the size of your stub is synonymous with the big times. If we just rung your bell, you owe it to yourself to have a peek at the video past the break. There are no step-by-step instructions to accompany it (they’re out there, trust us), but man, you can just see the life seeping back into it as the code scrolls down and Android grows seconds closer to booting. It’s glorious, really.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Olympus’ E-P1 micro four thirds camera only hit the market a few months ago, but already it seems as if a successor is inching closer to release. A peek at the outfit’s official Chinese website shows a panel and link for a “new” E-P2 camera, though it seems as if the page it’s listed on isn’t quite complete. Still, we’re guessing there’s a reason of some sort it’s listed, but we’re still struggling to find the patience required to see this whole thing through.

Acer’s Aspire Z5610 all-in-one desktop certainly stood out from the pack when the company announced it last week, and it looks like it also managed to impress in person — at least if Le Journal du Geek’s brief hands-off look at it is any indication. As you can see above, that includes a glimpse at the desktop’s nifty ambient lighting system (which we presume can be turned off), a look at the system’s slim profile, and a peek at the port situation ’round back. The site also reports that the system will be available on October 30th in France, although Acer still isn’t saying more specific than “this holiday season” for a release over here. Hit up the link below for a closer look.

Microsoft’s Windows Cafe opens its doors in Paris http://lemenem.com/tech/microsofts-windows-cafe-opens-its-doors-in-paris.php http://lemenem.com/tech/microsofts-windows-cafe-opens-its-doors-in-paris.php#comments Thu, 22 Oct 2009 18:16:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/laptops/microsofts-windows-cafe-opens-its-doors-in-paris/

Japan may be home to the Windows 7 Whopper, and the US has the less edible contents of the very first Microsoft Store, but it looks like Paris may be the real place to be for out and about Windows fans, as it can now claim the only Windows Cafe in the world as its own alongside all those other little tourist attractions you might be interested in. Better still, it looks like the cafe serves up at least as many types of drinks as Windows editions, and there’s some WiFi available for those looking for a place to loiter around. Hit up the link below for a peek inside courtesy of Le Journal du Geek.

Keeping those dreams alive by scrubbing dishes at your least favorite eatery? Best put those aspirations on the front burner, as Panasonic’s got a mighty fine robot swooping in to take your place — and for a whole lot less cash, to boot. At Panny’s robotics laboratory in Osaka, the company recently showcased its latest gaggle of prototype robots designed to help humans take it easy more often. Among the usual suspects were a porter robot designed to help with heavy lifting, while the star of the show was undoubtedly the dish washing bot that wasn’t afraid to get its metallic digits wet and soapy. As expected, an array of integrated sensors kept it from grabbing a wine glass too tightly, and its four fingers enabled it to do most everything a human washer could (sans the kvetching). Have a peek at these guys in action just past the break.

As Microsoft and Apple have so precisely demonstrated, there’s nothing like a face full of egg to make the competition fire up the sucker punch machine. Take Peek, for example, who is now offering angered Sidekick users (you know, the ones that probably lost all of their data recently) a gratis Pronto for their trouble. All that’s required is an image of you, a frowny face, your wiped Sidekick and a T-Mobile bill — once that’s sent over to Peek’s dedicated inbox, you’ll soon receive your Pronto in the mail. ‘Course, it’s up to you to foot the $20 monthly bill for keeping the thing active, but hey, free’s free. Kind of.
