A team of talent from MIT has put its head down in order to concoct a new Android application that can come darn close to solving complex computational problems in just a fraction of the time that it’d take a bona fide supercomputer. The goal here is to let researchers and scientists convert to Google’s mobile OS, but if you aren’t falling for that one, it’s also designed to “let engineers perform complicated calculations in the field, and to better control systems for vehicles or robotic systems.” Of course, the models that are hosted on the phone do require a supercomputer to create, but once certain formulas are embedded, the app can then compute approximations in mere seconds rather than hours. Best of all, rbAPPmit is available for download as well speak in the source link below, but we’d probably wait for the (presumably thick) user guide to surface before diving in headfirst.

If 6.0.0 RC1 just wasn’t cutting it for ya, CyanogenMod-6.0 has released what’s being touted as the “first stable release based on Android 2.2″ and has hit the target number of supported devices, which by our quick count includes EVO 4G, Slide, Nexus One, Dream / Magic, Aria, and Droid — and we might be missing a few.. You know the drill; if you need a bit of Froyo in your mobile life.

Google sells out of Nexus Ones for devs, ‘working hard’ to get more; SLCD not alleviating backorders yet http://lemenem.com/tech/google-sells-out-of-nexus-ones-for-devs-working-hard-to-get-more-slcd-not-alleviating-backorders-yet.php http://lemenem.com/tech/google-sells-out-of-nexus-ones-for-devs-working-hard-to-get-more-slcd-not-alleviating-backorders-yet.php#comments Fri, 20 Aug 2010 19:22:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/google-sells-out-of-nexus-ones-for-devs-working-hard-to-get-more-slcd-not-alleviating-backorders-yet.php

The Nexus One retail situation has been pretty dire since Google humanely put down its own online store, leaving only paid developers with an easy option to get an unlocked unit (and only an AWS 3G version at that). Now, even that’s been taken away — at least temporarily — thanks to unexpectedly strong demand that left Google to “blow through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time” and run up a backorder with HTC. Interestingly, Google specifically points out that HTC is doing a good job with manufacturing despite the AMOLED shortage, which leads us to wonder whether the SLCD version is shipping in quantity yet — and considering how the Nexus One and Desire are well into midlife, we wonder whether it makes sense to even bother at this point when we’ve got next-gen products just around the corner. Good news is that Google still seems committed to getting Nexus Ones back in stock for developers, we just don’t know when that’s going to happen.

Verizon quietly pushes Skype Mobile onto select non-smartphones http://lemenem.com/tech/verizon-quietly-pushes-skype-mobile-onto-select-non-smartphones.php http://lemenem.com/tech/verizon-quietly-pushes-skype-mobile-onto-select-non-smartphones.php#comments Wed, 18 Aug 2010 14:58:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/verizon-quietly-pushes-skype-mobile-onto-select-non-smartphones.php

Back in February, Verizon Wireless made it quite clear what phones could be used with Skype Mobile, and the whole lot were smartphones. Sometime between then and now, however, it seems as if the carrier (or Skype… or both) has had a change of heart, as today a select few non-smartphones are showing up in its database as being compatible with Skype Mobile. Samsung’s $20-on-contract Reality, LG’s $80-on-contract Chocolate Touch and the enV Touch are all displayed as being in support of Skype Mobile, leading us to believe that an even larger stable of VZW handsets may soon hop onboard. Meanwhile, perfectly capable Android phones like the Nexus One can’t find a decent Skype client to save their life. For shame.

Update: Ah, ha! Now it’s official, with Skype confirming that Skype Mobile is now available on VZW multimedia phones on the BREW platform.

It’s bad enough that Google decided to stop selling the Nexus One directly — especially since the AT&T-friendly 850 / 1900MHz version is nigh impossible to find now — but what sucks even more is that existing owners have been in peril of being left high and dry for accessorizing their increasingly rare little gems. Thankfully, the Nexus One’s manufacturer has stepped in to fill the void, offering the full range first-party goodies including the car dock, desktop dock, holster, and rear covers in a range of eye-popping colors. We’re not seeing batteries here, but… you know, there’s always the gigantic aftermarket option.

Google just confirmed it at an Android / Flash event in San Francisco, and sure enough, our trusty Nexus One just found, downloaded and installed the final (read: non-beta) version of Adobe’s Flash Player 10.1. It weighs in at just under 5MB, and it’s looking as sweet as ever so far. Nexus One owners can hit up the Android Market to get their download on, and we’d highly encourage you to bookmark a few dozen Flash sites just to rub in the faces of your dearest iDevice-owning friends. Just sayin’.

General Dynamics’ GD300 is the Pip-Boy that runs Android http://lemenem.com/tech/general-dynamics-gd300-is-the-pip-boy-that-runs-android.php http://lemenem.com/tech/general-dynamics-gd300-is-the-pip-boy-that-runs-android.php#comments Mon, 09 Aug 2010 12:39:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/general-dynamics-gd300-is-the-pip-boy-that-runs-android.php

Yes, we totally stole this headline from our Spanish colleagues, but they summed it up perfectly — the General Dynamics Itronix GD300 is right out of Fallout 3, well ahead of HP’s model. It’s a full-on wrist- or chest-mounted GPS unit with an unspecified version of Android at the helm, designed to deliver both real-time global positioning (with a SiRFstarIII chip and stubby quad-helix antenna) and connect to tactical radios. The eight-ounce ruggedized plastic package is MIL-STD 810G tested for durability and holds a 600MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, 256MB of memory, 8GB flash storage and a 3.5-inch, 800 x 480 “glove-friendly” and “sunlight readable” touchscreen display. That’s only about as powerful as your average consumer smartphone, but you’re not going to be painting targets on your Nexus One, we suppose. No word on whether it will pick up post-apocalyptic radio stations as your mission unfolds. We’ve got a close-up photo and press release after the break, and you can find the full brochure at our source link.

Got yourself a QNAP NAS, do you? If you’re also in legal possession of an Android or iOS-based device, you could soon be streaming your dusty Boyz II Men and / or Our Lady Peace jams straight from your network. Over the past month, the outfit has released QMobile apps for both Android and iOS, enabling everything from Google’s Nexus One to Apple’s iPod touch, iPad and iPhone to remotely stream images, tunes and videos so long as their NAS is online (and connected to a halfway decent broadband line). The app is said to work just fine over 3G or WiFi, and there’s even a My Jukebox feature that essentially acts as a shuffle system for those who aren’t too picky about what comes through. Both apps are available now in the Android Market and App Store for no charge, but you’ll probably want to tap those source links and update your NAS management software to v3.3.0 before trying any fancy business. Video promo is past the break, if you need some encouragement.

Nexus One lives on as Google’s official developer phone http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-lives-on-as-googles-official-developer-phone.php http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-lives-on-as-googles-official-developer-phone.php#comments Thu, 05 Aug 2010 15:16:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-lives-on-as-googles-official-developer-phone.php

Well, it looks like the now slightly dated Google Ion finally has an official successor — Google has just announced that the Nexus One is its new developer phone. It apparently remains unchanged from the recently-axed consumer model, however, and Google notes that it will ship with Android 2.1 but receive Android 2.2 shortly after you turn it on. Got your developer credentials handy? Then you can log in and get your order in right now for $529.

Update: We just got a look at the specs on Google’s developer site and it looks like the Nexus One on offer is unfortunately T-Mobile only. Check out the tell-tale bands for yourself after the break.

Update 2: The specs mention that the device has “no root access” and that the bootloader is locked, but we’re taking this to mean it’s no different from any other Nexus One you’d buy. More ominously, though, it says that fastboot isn’t enabled, which leads us to wonder whether this is going to cause problems with bootloader unlocks in the field. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Thanks, Carson!

DARPA has long been working on making real-time translation systems practical and portable, and it looks like it’s now closer than ever to its goal — although it can’t necessarily take all the credit. The research agency recently teamed up with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (or NIST) to test three different systems as part of its TRANSTAC project, at least one of which relies on none other than a Nexus One to do real-time, spoken language translation from Pashto to English, and vice versa. Of course, specific details on the translation systems are otherwise a bit hard to come by, but NIST is more than happy to draw a few Star Trek comparisons in its demonstration video — check it out after the break.

Enso whips up two smartphones and three new slates, but we wouldn’t order any of ‘em http://lemenem.com/tech/enso-whips-up-two-smartphones-and-three-new-slates-but-we-wouldnt-order-any-of-em.php http://lemenem.com/tech/enso-whips-up-two-smartphones-and-three-new-slates-but-we-wouldnt-order-any-of-em.php#comments Sat, 31 Jul 2010 12:26:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/enso-whips-up-two-smartphones-and-three-new-slates-but-we-wouldnt-order-any-of-em.php

Oh, Enso — must you really give us a reason to hope? After dealing with what felt like a case of the vaporwares, and then being epically disappointed with the zenPad (which is now out of stock, curiously) that you finally shipped, we just can’t muster up the courage to look fondly upon the five new products that are gracing your webstore. That said, those that don’t mind risk taking and actually enjoy the thought of fighting for a refund have three new MIDs / slates to ponder along with a pair of Android-based smartphones to consider. Let’s break ‘em down real quick, shall we?

  • zenPad 2 ($219; shipping now): Here you have a 5-inch, Android 1.5-based MID with an 800 x 480 resolution resistive touchscreen, a bundled stylus, inbuilt 3G, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, microSD slot (8GB included), 128MB of RAM, 256MB NAND Flash, a 624MHz Marvell PXA303 Xscale CPU, integrated accelerometer, onboard GPS, micro-USB port, 3.5mm headphone jack and a battery good for 4.5 hours of use. We’re told that an Android 2.1 update is “imminent,” but we believe that about as much as we believe BP’s promise to “make it right.”
  • zenPad 3 ($249; pre-order): This here tablet boasts the exact same specifications as the zenPad 2 (right down to the battery life and resolution), but it rocks a 7-inch design that’ll aid those who can’t squint hard enough to see fonts on the 5-inch sibling.
  • zenPad 4 ($199; shipping now): We hate to state the obvious, but this is quite obviously an iPad KIRF — right down to the Home button. You’ll find a 10.2-inch resistive touchpanel with a 1,024 x 600 resolution (one that Enso swears up and down “has a fast response and works very well”), along with Android 2.1, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, 256MB of RAM, 2GB of storage, a microSD slot (8GB included), a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, built-in accelerometer and a 2,400mAh battery that’s good for 5 to 7 hours of life.
  • zenPhone ($349; shipping now): So… it looks like a Nexus One KIRF, it’s called a zenPhone, yet it says it’s a MID. Oh, and it’s not this ZenPhone. Whatever the case, it’s got a 4.3-inch resistive touchscreen (800 x 480), 3G HSDPA radio, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, 256MB of NAND Flash, a microSD slot (8GB included), a 3.2 megapixel rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera, a 2,600mAh battery, onboard GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack and — wait for it — Maemo 5 running the show. Yeah, seriously.
  • zenDroid ($319; pre-order): In the market for a Droid KIRF, are you? You’ve come to the right place, with this one offering a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen (800 x 480), 3G HSDPA, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, an FM radio tuner, Android 2.1 (”upgradable to 2.2,” we’re told), a microSD slot (8GB bundled in), 512MB of NAND Flash, a 624MHz Marvell PXA935 processor, 5 megapixel rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera, a 1,500mAh battery, onboard GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack and a micro-USB connector.

[Thanks, Neil]

Nexus One blasts off to 28,000 feet, looks slightly worse for wear (video) http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-blasts-off-to-28000-feet-looks-slightly-worse-for-wear-video.php http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-blasts-off-to-28000-feet-looks-slightly-worse-for-wear-video.php#comments Fri, 30 Jul 2010 18:40:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-blasts-off-to-28000-feet-looks-slightly-worse-for-wear-video.php

Your average satellite these days is roughly on par in terms of size with your average living room, give or take, and so naturally the cost of lofting one into orbit is, if you’ll pardon the phrase, sky high. Despite that, many offer less processing power a mobile processor like Snapdragon. The obvious solution? Chuck a smartphone into orbit and revel in the savings. That’s the idea behind the PhoneSat, helped along by the Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation, which strapped a Nexus One into a rocket with 1,000lbs of thrust and threw it up to 28,000 feet to see how it copes with the immense stress of riding into space. Of course, 28,000 feet isn’t quite space (NASA would have run out of astronaut badges long ago), but the G-forces and temperature cycles felt during this short trip are comparable to a one-way voyage to orbit. The first such launch didn’t go so well, with the rocket suffering a ballistic return — coming in like a projectile without a ‘chute. The shattered remains of that are shown above. But, the second flight was rather more successful, and the video results can be seen below — captured by the phone itself.

During the iPhone 4 Antenna issue keynote, CEO Steve Jobs made it a point to emphasize that Apple was not the only handset manufacturer to have devices suffer from signal loss when held ‘incorrectly,’ which he demonstrated on some out of date hardware. (Blackberry Bold, Droid Eris, Samsung Omnia 2). We here at TechnoBuffalo decided to test his notion, and tested 7 of the most popular, current-gen phones on the market, which should give a nice sampling of what to expect when you go to your carriers shop to pick out your shiny new toy. In this round of death drip tests we tried: * iPhone 4 * EVO 4G * Droid X * iPhone 3GS * HTC Aria * Nexus One * Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) The results were surprising TechnoBuffalo: www.technobuffalo.com Follow me on twitter cuthut.com

Welcome back to our “worst kept secrets” hour, where HTC has seen fit to release a PR blast informing the world of what it already knew: the Desire and Nexus One are getting Super (duper) LCD displays to fill demand that Samsung’s AMOLED division cannot. Interestingly, HTC’s statement says nothing of the Droid Incredible, a close sibling to these 3.7-inch devices, but the global Nexus One and Desire are getting hooked up “later this summer.” CEO Peter Chou has also helpfully explained that the visual experience on the new SLCD screens is “comparable” to AMOLED, but offers better battery performance. Mystery HTC Windows Phone 7 device: in the wild and lacking any Sense http://lemenem.com/tech/mystery-htc-windows-phone-7-device-in-the-wild-and-lacking-any-sense.php http://lemenem.com/tech/mystery-htc-windows-phone-7-device-in-the-wild-and-lacking-any-sense.php#comments Sun, 25 Jul 2010 21:56:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/mystery-htc-windows-phone-7-device-in-the-wild-and-lacking-any-sense.php

A candybar slate from HTC with a 3.7-inch SLCD and 1GHz Snapdragon processor — sounds about right for the Desire, but this little puppy is actually running Windows Phone 7 (presumably a developer build, given the apps catalog). According to our tipster, the three buttons under the screen are touch-sensitive à la Nexus One, the camera boasts 8 megapixels of memory retention, and the “hardware is ready.” What you’re not seeing, however, is any sign of skinning — no Sense on this one, we’re afraid. The company is apparently in talks with two US carriers, including Verizon (we’d presume Sprint given the CDMA connection, but we’ve no insight here). Are we looking at the rumored VZW-bound HTC Spark from June? Unfortunately we can’t confirm anything at this point, so for now, just enjoy the tantalizing snapshots.

[Thanks, anonymous]

The HTC HD2 did it, and so did the iPhone 3GS (assuming you jailbroke), but now you can get your blocky amnesiac ex-SOLDIER action on Android courtesy of ZodTTD and yongzh. Their PSX4Droid app just launched on the Android Market for $5.99, and — despite a few glitches — it emulates PlayStation games like a charm, complete with multiple scaling modes and save states. Watch a Galaxy S rock the likes of Final Fantasy VII and Ridge Racer after the break, plus Crash Bandicoot on a Nexus One and some paired Wiimote action with a Dell Streak. Then, challenge yourself to adhere to intellectual property law instead of immediately hunting down ROMs and a BIOS file. We dare you.

Tweaker ports Samsung’s TouchWIz UI onto non-rooted Nexus One for reasons unknown http://lemenem.com/tech/tweaker-ports-samsungs-touchwiz-ui-onto-non-rooted-nexus-one-for-reasons-unknown.php http://lemenem.com/tech/tweaker-ports-samsungs-touchwiz-ui-onto-non-rooted-nexus-one-for-reasons-unknown.php#comments Sat, 24 Jul 2010 09:08:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/tweaker-ports-samsungs-touchwiz-ui-onto-non-rooted-nexus-one-for-reasons-unknown.php

This one’s been kicking around the interwebs for a few weeks now, but it has managed to grow into something of a beast during that period. Frankly, we couldn’t think of less fitting way to send the glorious Nexus One out than to completely deface it and ruin what Google has worked so hard to perfect. But regardless of what we think, that’s exactly what has happened here. One rolle3k over at xda developers clearly has a masochistic gene or two planted inside of his skull, but at least his APK doesn’t require your N1 to be rooted before providing you access to a TouchWiz user interface. Feel free to hit the source if you’re up for seeing what you’ve been missing out on, but only if you literally cannot think of a single better thing to do with your time.

Samsung Galaxy S review shootout: Captivate for AT&T and Vibrant for T-Mobile http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-galaxy-s-review-shootout-captivate-for-att-and-vibrant-for-t-mobile.php http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-galaxy-s-review-shootout-captivate-for-att-and-vibrant-for-t-mobile.php#comments Thu, 22 Jul 2010 20:20:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/samsung-galaxy-s-review-shootout-captivate-for-att-and-vibrant-for-t-mobile.php

We’ve got to hand it to Samsung with its Galaxy S line. Coordinating the launch of a single family of devices across all four national US carriers (plus a regional or two) is a feat very rarely accomplished, and usually reserved for really unique handsets that those carriers wouldn’t be able to effectively source from anyone else; HTC’s Touch Pro2 is a prime example of that. Add to that the murky issue of exclusivity periods… and, well, yeah, Samsung definitely has reason to be proud here — on the business end of things, anyway. Never mind the awesome contractual maneuvering that undoubtedly took place to make this all happen, though — we all know that it’s the hardware (and software) that really counts. Today we’re looking at the first two models of the American run, the Captivate for AT&T and the Vibrant for T-Mobile; Verizon’s Fascinate and Sprint’s QWERTY- and WiMAX-equipped Epic 4G are still forthcoming, though we expect the Fascinate to be largely similar to these first two.

Beyond their simple appeal as sexy, high-end Android phones, what makes the Captivate and Vibrant especially interesting is that they are actually their respective carriers’ only high-end Android phones at the moment. In other words: if 1GHz processors and high-res AMOLED displays are how you roll, these are basically the only game in town if you’re on AT&T or T-Mobile — particularly now that Nexus One sales are winding down. Do they rise to the challenge? Let’s have a look.

Android 1.5 and 1.6 are still major players in the field, together accounting for some 41 percent of all Google-powered phones in use as of July 15 — but for the first time, Android 2.1 is on significantly more than half of the phones out there, up from an even 50 percent in mid-June. 55.5 percent of devices are running Eclair to be exact, and Froyo also makes an appearance with a little sliver of 3.3 percent — an anemic figure obviously hampered by the fact that no one outside Google itself (on the now nearly-defunct Nexus One) has deployed the latest version yet. It’s fascinating to see the change in the version mix over time get visualized like this — now all we need is that dark green line at the very bottom to shoot upwards and obliterate everything else on the graph. Let’s make it happen, guys.

Nexus One is sold out in Google’s store — forever http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-is-sold-out-in-googles-store-forever.php http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-is-sold-out-in-googles-store-forever.php#comments Wed, 21 Jul 2010 14:59:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-is-sold-out-in-googles-store-forever.php

Google warned us that the Nexus One was approaching the end of its days, but we’ve gotta admit, we didn’t realize just how quickly that moment would come. Sure enough, Google’s official online store for the phone now just shows an ominous message that “the Nexus One is no longer available for purchase directly” from the company, which means you’re going to have to go through Vodafone, KT in South Korea, or hold out for the units that they plan on selling directly to registered developers. Needless to say, for the bulk of potential customers, the phone is all but history. So, on that note, Nexus One: for your straight-shooting stock Android ways and your unlocked radio, you’ll be dearly missed — and we hope your legacy lives on, even though your retail model does not.

[Thanks, Dan]

We knew this was eventually coming, and here it is: Google is giving everyone the heads-up that it just got a fresh batch of Nexus Ones in stock, and once they’ve been sold through, they’ll no longer be offered directly through the company’s online store. For what it’s worth, the customer service lines will stay open even after that happens — and you’ll still be able to buy a phone through KT in South Korea, Vodafone in Europe, and “possibly other [retailers] based on local market conditions” — but by and large, your average American is going to have a hard time getting one pretty shortly. If you’re a registered Android developer, though, Google’s looking at continuing to offer the device through some sort of sales partner — a wise move considering it’ll be just about the only thing you can buy unlocked running a clean-slate latest build.

Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s Android aren’t exactly complete strangers (hello, Moto), but now the company is saying it’ll bring a full-featured client to the platform sometime within the next six weeks. Not much is known, but according to PC World (via Yahoo! News), it’ll at least include desktop-parity with features such as web, image, and news search (in addition to maps, of course). ¿Está tu Nexus One listo para los links?

Seems trivial at cursory glance until you realize the Desire has a FM radio app, which should ergo be just as feasible on the Google-branded device. Cut to xda-developers’ intersectRaven, who’s released a custom N1 kernel that theoretically brings life to the FM receptor. It’s available to download, but as for when you’ll get a chance to really use this yourself, that’s entirely up to the custom ROM developers updating their respective wares. For his part, Paul O’Brien said today he’s already got it working on an upcoming Froyo Sense build for the device — hang tight, folks, it’s coming.

[Thanks, John]

Earlier this evening, we took the plunge — now, we’re rocking Froyo on our old-and-busted T-Mobile G1. That’s because Cyanogen’s team of ROM hackers has come through once again for the little handset that could, serving early adopters with HTC Dream and Magic phones (as well as the Nexus One) with the first fully-functioning, stable build of CyanogenMod 6. Based on Google’s famous frozen yogurt, the release candidate’s got more fabulous tweaks than you can shake a stick at, but sadly doesn’t seem to include Flash 10.1, and though WiFi and the camera are working great (as well as SurfaceFlinger and Chrome to Phone) many would-be shoppers in the Android Market are finding themselves faced with the dreaded force close. As usual, you’ll find instructions at the source link if you understand the risks — if you’re not careful, you can easily brick your phone.

Ever wondered what would happen if you threw another mobile OS onto your Nexus One? Without removing Android? Contrary to popular belief, the world will in fact not end, and in many cases, lives could very well be improved. One particular modder over at Nexus One Hacks has managed to put together a video how-to demonstrating the installation of Ubuntu as a secondary OS on his rooted N1, and while you’ll obviously find yourself dealing with a few incompatibilities should you follow suit, it’s not like you really have anything better to do tonight than tinker. Right? Right. Jump on past the break and mash play to get going.

Rumors of a June 8 launch of Telus’ HTC Triumph — a rebranded version of the Desire, seemingly — came and went without a trace, but now, we’ve got another reason to think that the model’s launch might be just around the corner. Basically, an HTC device with model code PB99220 just got FCC approval with = WCDMA on bands I, II, and V, which would make it fit for use on Bell, Telus, Rogers, and AT&T (plus some European support thrown in for good measure). The original Desire was numbered PB99200 (the Nexus One was in the PB991×0 range), and HTC’s shtick is to recycle these codes for different variants of a particular model by changing only the second-to-last digit. We don’t have any current intel to suggest this is going anywhere but Telus, but hey — with AT&T opening up its doors to higher-end Android gear with the Captivate, it could happen, right?

These five Nexus One smartphones may seem to have defects, but there’s actually nothing wrong with their AMOLED screens — the funky colors are an attempt to improve battery life by turning off unnecessary sub-pixel LEDs. Hooking up his handset to an industrial power meter, Android engineer Jeff Sharkey discovered a blood-red screen drew 42 percent less current than full color — the least of any combination by far — purportedly doubling the effective battery life of the phone. While you’re probably not going to be able to test the requisite software patch for yourself unless you’re mildly familiar with Google code, you’ll find a video of the crimson wonder after the break to fuel your dreams of a eyestrain-free astronomy cheat sheet… and Android bullfighting, of course.

Another day, another Froyo build. Now that Android 2.2 build FRF85 — i.e. the big one that got pushed over-the-air to every Nexus One this week — is out on the prowl, Google’s taken it upon itself to release yet another update, FRF91. We’ve heard from a few tipsters that it’s also going out OTA, but our devices have yet to be notified — all the same, a direct link for the file has been found, so it’s legit. Word on the street is it’s just a security update, but we’ve to install it ourselves. Go on, live a little, download’s just below.

iPhone 4’s antenna problem looks worse than it is, but it’s still bad http://lemenem.com/tech/iphone-4s-antenna-problem-looks-worse-than-it-is-but-its-still-bad.php http://lemenem.com/tech/iphone-4s-antenna-problem-looks-worse-than-it-is-but-its-still-bad.php#comments Wed, 30 Jun 2010 18:26:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/iphone-4s-antenna-problem-looks-worse-than-it-is-but-its-still-bad.php

The iPhone 4’s antenna issues have sparked off a firestorm of debate as to the root cause — Apple says holding the phone differently or buying a case are the best answers, while other are going down a more voodoo path — but our friends at AnandTech have done some more scientific testing of the problem and come up with a few interesting results. Turns out the iPhone 4 actually performs slightly better inside a case than a phone like the Nexus One, which has had similar issues crop up, but it’s slightly worse when held in the hand, reporting an average signal drop of 20dB. Here’s where it gets a little wacky, though: the signal meter in iOS 4 is logarithmic, so that 20dB drop can either leave you looking steady at five bars or drop you all the way to zero, depending on what the actual signal level in the area is like. Take a look at the chart above and you’ll get it: the range of values between one bar and four spans just 23dB, while the range for five bars is 40dB. That means holding the phone in an area with a strong five-bar signal will have no apparent effect — you can lose 20dB at full signal and still see five bars — but holding the phone in an area with weaker coverage will easily drop the meter to one bar, since the 20dB signal drop covers almost the entirety of the remaining 23dB scale. Oops.

Of course, that’s just the on-screen display, which Apple can and likely will tweak in a future iOS update. The real question is whether the reported signal has anything to do with performance, and Anandtech agrees with our general experience, saying that the iPhone 4’s improved signal to noise ratio means it actually does a better job of hanging onto calls and using data when there’s low signal than the iPhone 3GS. In their words, “this iPhone gets the best cellular reception yet, even though measured signal is lower than the 3GS.” However, there’s no getting around the fact that we’ve definitely dropped a couple calls with the iPhone 4 by holding it the wrong way, and Anandtech says the only real solution to the antenna issue will be for Apple to either subsidize free bumpers or add an insulative coating to the antenna band. We’ll see what happens — we’ve got a feeling an iOS update is on the way, but we’d definitely love to see Apple pursue a more aggressive solution to this problem.

It’s summer. It’s hot. Naturally, everyone wants to lick some frozen dessert in one form or another. Shortly after the Nexus One got its absolutely official Android 2.2 update, HTC has once again leaped out to tell us of its own Froyo offering. The Taiwanese mobile giant has informed Recombu that it’s expecting “several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire” to join Google’s latest green bot party “beginning in Q3.” We went to the trouble of confirming this with HTC ourselves, and while this isn’t really much of an update from the company’s previous statement in terms of time frame, here’s hoping that at least some of its customers will get the delivery before the summer fiesta ends.

Android 2.2 Froyo FRF85 now available for Nexus One (update: official) http://lemenem.com/tech/android-2-2-froyo-frf85-now-available-for-nexus-one-update-official.php http://lemenem.com/tech/android-2-2-froyo-frf85-now-available-for-nexus-one-update-official.php#comments Tue, 29 Jun 2010 03:59:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/android-2-2-froyo-frf85-now-available-for-nexus-one-update-official.php

We’ve been receiving numerous tips over the last hour that Nexus One owners on AT&T bands are receiving an over-the-air update for Android 2.2 FRF85, otherwise known as the “bulletproofed” Froyo build. No confirmation at this point, and since you’re asking, no word yet either on an update for the larger T-Mobile N1 install base (though we’ve had at least one report of a user on FRF50 getting the OTA today). We’ve pinged Google for answers, will let ya know what we hear.

Update: Thanks to a few readers, we’ve now got a direct link from Google’s servers to update from EPE54B to FRF85.

Update 2: Tipster Christian R has sent us a picture of his T-Mobile-banded Nexus One with FRF85, apparently updated from Android 2.1 build ERE27. Has the T-Mobile rollout begun? Not for us, at least.

Update 3: And now we’ve got a direct link to download a FRF85 build that’ll supposedly work for any Android build. We can safely say that it worked for us on a T-Mobile device with 2.1 / ERE27. Download from Google here, and if you need direction on how to do the update yourself, take a cue from our commenters. [Thanks, MRCUR and afinite]

Update 4: And now it’s official. Keep an eye on that notification bar if you’re itching for the OTA method. So that’s one phone down, quite a few to go! [Thanks, cl]

If phones could make babies, then this HTC Wildfire would indubitably be the love child of the Desire and Nexus One. But of course, the humdrum reality is that ’tis just an Android 2.1 replacement for the entry-level Tattoo — same 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7225 processor, 3.2-inch 320 x 240 capacitive LCD touchscreen instead of 2.8-inch resistive, 384MB RAM instead of 256MB, and a 5-megapixel camera instead of 3.2 (although quality matters more, obviously). So can this affordable handset provide enough bang for the buck to satisfy Europeans and Asians? Can the aging processor keep Sense UI well oiled? All will be revealed after the break.

HTC running low on AMOLED stock, will add SLCD to the mix for some models http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-running-low-on-amoled-stock-will-add-slcd-to-the-mix-for-some-models.php http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-running-low-on-amoled-stock-will-add-slcd-to-the-mix-for-some-models.php#comments Fri, 25 Jun 2010 23:52:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-running-low-on-amoled-stock-will-add-slcd-to-the-mix-for-some-models.php

AMOLED displays in phones haven’t necessarily lived up to their promise; they’d been billed as the be-all, end-all answer for clarity, vibrance, and low power consumption, but in reality, the latest and greatest LCDs look just as good, offer similar viewing angles, have little to no impact on battery life, and fare far better in direct sunlight. We’ve been able to confirm this evening that HTC will be adding an additional supplier of displays later this year — Sony — which will be delivering its Super TFT LCD tech as a mobile exclusive (initially, at least) to key HTC handsets, some of which are already in the marketplace.

Specifically, Samsung’s had a devil of a time keeping up with deliveries of its 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display, which means that the Desire, Droid Incredible, and Nexus One could all theoretically be impacted — but because this is a problem of the demand for displays outstripping supply (or at least the supply that Samsung is letting HTC buy), at least some of the affected phones will likely be offered both in AMOLED and SLCD varieties. How those products will be differentiated in the market is unclear, but it may not matter much — we’re told that the displays are virtually indistinguishable. We’re working to get our hands on an SLCD phone just as soon as we can, and when we do, we’ll put our eyeballs on the case.

Apple responds to iPhone 4 reception issues: you’re holding the phone the wrong way http://lemenem.com/tech/apple-responds-to-iphone-4-reception-issues-youre-holding-the-phone-the-wrong-way.php http://lemenem.com/tech/apple-responds-to-iphone-4-reception-issues-youre-holding-the-phone-the-wrong-way.php#comments Fri, 25 Jun 2010 00:07:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/apple-responds-to-iphone-4-reception-issues-youre-holding-the-phone-the-wrong-way.php

So, we just spoke with Apple and got the straight dirt on the reception issues that have been plaguing users today… and it’s a little surprising. In essence, Apple cops to the fact there are reception issues with the new iPhone — namely, that if you cover the bottom-left corner of the phone and bridge the gap between the notch there with your naked flesh, you could see some signal degradation. Yes, you read that right: it’s not a software or production issue, simply a matter of the physical location of your hand in regards to the phone’s antenna. The company’s suggested fix? Move your hand position, or get a case which covers that part of the phone, thus breaking contact. As you can see in the email above which just arrived in our tip box, this is a sentiment which runs pretty high at the company. Here’s the official statement:

Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

We know what you’re thinking, and we’re thinking it too: this sounds crazy. Essentially, Apple is saying that the problem is how you hold your phone, and that the solution is to change that habit, or buy one of their cases. Admittedly, this isn’t a problem that exists only for the iPhone 4 — we’ve seen reports of the same behavior on previous generations (the 3G and 3GS), and there is a running thread about this problem with the Nexus One. While it is definitely true that interference is an unavoidable problem, we can’t help feeling like this is really a bit of bad design. If the only answer is to move your hand, why didn’t Apple just move the antenna position? What we can say without question is that in our testing of the phone, we had improved reception and fewer dropped calls than we experienced with the last generation, and we never noticed this issue. Additionally, when using a bumper we can’t recreate the signal loss. So, now we have an answer… all we’re wondering is whether or not the company will start handing out bumpers pro-bono to those who are experiencing problems. It certainly seems like the right thing to do.

Update: To add a little perspective, check out a video from 2008 after the break showing the same issue with the now-ancient iPhone 3G (thanks Inge).

Nexus One getting Android 2.2 FRF83 update over the air? http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-getting-android-2-2-frf83-update-over-the-air.php http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-getting-android-2-2-frf83-update-over-the-air.php#comments Thu, 24 Jun 2010 03:41:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-getting-android-2-2-frf83-update-over-the-air.php

The Android 2.2 source code just went public this morning, but we’re hearing a fully-compiled, legitimate OTA version of Froyo may be hitting small batches of Nexus One handsets as well. Though a 1.78MB ZIP file floating around XDA-developers this afternoon was originally thought to be the droid we’ve all been looking for, Android and Me reports that they received an honest-to-goodness OTA version of FRF83 after trying (and failing) to get that ZIP to work, and we’re getting several similar reports. Let us know in comments if you’ve received a frozen treat of your own.

Android Market is down, showing zero apps (update: fixed) http://lemenem.com/tech/android-market-is-down-showing-zero-apps-update-fixed.php http://lemenem.com/tech/android-market-is-down-showing-zero-apps-update-fixed.php#comments Wed, 23 Jun 2010 20:41:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/android-market-is-down-showing-zero-apps-update-fixed.php

Look, we know that checking the Android Market for updates its a nervous habit during brief periods of downtime for many of us — but for now, you’re going to have to go back to chewing your nails or tapping your fingers on the table, because the Market’s down. Well, that’s only partially true — you can still get into the Market app on your phone without any errors, you just won’t see any apps in there, which renders it pretty useless by our estimation. Hang on, don’t panic — we imagine this won’t last long.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: It’s still down for us on a Froyo Nexus One, but if you take a gander through our comments section, you’ll see that a lot of folks are having no trouble at all — so it’s probably based on your location, your devices, and your operating system. As far as we can tell, it’s not restricted to Froyo since we’ve received a number of tips on the issue and we’re hearing of some Droids that can’t see apps. Keep the observations coming, folks!

Update 2: Google just reached out to us to let us know that it should be fixed and that the total outage was somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 minutes. They’re apologizing for the inconvenience — but with the Droid X being announced today, can you really hold a grudge?

It’s still not hitting the bulk of Nexus Ones as far as we can tell, but for what it’s worth, Google has unleashed the source code for Android 2.2 today, which is a solid sign that the code’s been bulletproofed to the Open Handset Alliance’s satisfaction and is ready for deployment across a number of phones from different manufacturers and carriers. It’s still ultimately up to a bunch of gatekeepers in suits to decide when various models will get the upgrade, but this is basically zero day — so let the countdown begin.

iPhone 4 teardown: 512MB RAM confirmed (updated) http://lemenem.com/tech/iphone-4-teardown-512mb-ram-confirmed-updated.php http://lemenem.com/tech/iphone-4-teardown-512mb-ram-confirmed-updated.php#comments Wed, 23 Jun 2010 10:16:02 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/iphone-4-teardown-512mb-ram-confirmed-updated.php

With nary hours since the reviews went live, the gang at iFixit — no doubt blessed by the hands of early deliveries — have procured an iPhone 4. And as is their modus operandi, they wasted no time tearing that sucker apart screw by screw. The teardown is still ongoing, but here’s what we got so far: 512MB RAM (confirming earlier rumors), a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor (same as the Samsung Wave S8500, they say), and chemically-strengthened Gorilla Glass for a more torture-friendly front panel. Those two screws on the bottom of the phone can be removed to excise the real panel, but the site says the front glass “will likely be rather challenging [to remove].” The battery, looking rather large even in the pictures, is a whopping 1420mAh Li-Polymer — comparatively, the Nexus One is 1400mAh and the HTC Droid Incredible is 1300mAh. There’s no SIM eject tool with this phone, but a paper clip should work just fine. As for the much-ballyhooed side panel antennas, the phone apparently now “[utilizes] whichever network band is less congested or has the least interference for the best signal quality, regardless of actual signal strength” — in other words, better call reliability (hopefully). Also helping with overall voice quality is a dual microphone setup for suppressing background noise. Peruse on over if you’re interested in seeing a bare Apple device at its most beautiful.

Update: The teardown is complete with a few more interesting bits of information. First, the battery is very easy to remove (and thus, replace) after removing the two screws. The LCD panel is not, however, as it’s tighly glued to the glass and digitizer. So if you do manage to break the Gorilla Glass, you’ll have to replace it, the digitizer, and the LCD as a single unit. The new AGD1 3-axis gyroscope is thought to be made by ST Micro and Broadcomm provides both the BCM4750IUB8 single-chip GPS receiver and BCM4329FKUBG receiver giving the iPhone 4 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and an FM radio.

Considering Google’s typically feverish pace in deploying new Android builds, we’ll admit — we kind of expected Android 2.2 Froyo to be released to retail Nexus Ones by now… but no dice. So, where is it? The company hasn’t committed to a firm date for a global roll-out yet, but there’s official word from an Android employee over on the Nexus One’s support forums this week that FRF72 is not the final update and that a release “will only happen once a release candidate meets [their] quality criteria.” Korean versions of the phone were pegged to launch with 2.2 this week, so any way you slice it, it can’t be long now.

Its existence has been an on-again, off-again rumor for over a week now, but it looks like a new build of Android 2.2 Froyo for the Nexus One — FRF72 — is very real. It finally leaked in the past few hours, we’ve tested it on a Nexus One of our own, and as far as we can tell, it’s straight-up legit. Get it if you dare — it’s up on Google’s official servers right now, but if it’s pulled, we’ve no doubt it’ll be floating around on a bunch of mirrors ad nauseam. G’luck to ya, folks!

Sure, the Desire’s coming to a handful of regional American carriers later this year, but what if you want the smaller, sleeker, more aluminum-clad Legend? Well, there aren’t any carrier-branded options in the States — but it seems that a number of unlocked units with US 3G bands are starting to ooze out of the cracks. Negri Electronics has an 850 / 1900MHz 3G Legend in its store for a shade under $500, which means you’re not getting much of a discount over the more powerful 850 / 1900MHz version of the Nexus One — but you are getting a pretty sweet unibody shell and an optical d-pad. Any takers?

The Nexus One may have taken a little while to reach South Korea, but it looks like KT is doing its best to make up for lost time — the carrier has just announced that it will not only be offering the Nexus One, but that it will come complete with Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo). True to Nexus One form, you’ll be able to snag the phone off-contract for 699,600 won (or about $576), but you’ll also be able to get it for just 150,000 won (or $125) on a two-year contract. Not many surprises beyond that, but it looks like supplies will be limited to just 4,000 units for the June 21st launch — although KT promises it will be readily available at stores across the country in July.

[Thanks, Tom]

HTC Aria review http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-aria-review.php http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-aria-review.php#comments Thu, 17 Jun 2010 15:04:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-aria-review.php

It’s sort of hard to believe, but AT&T finally has an Android phone worth paying attention to. Mind you, the AT&T compatible Nexus One is easily the best Googlephone on America’s largest GSM operator, but this is the first one that the company has bothered to brand and sell on a subsidized plan within its own stores. Pundits could argue the reasons why forever, but considering that the carrier’s doing all it can just to keep up with the demand for iPhones, it’s hard to imagine that AT&T has been longing to pursue Android with reckless abandon. Believe it or not, it’s been over 1.5 years since T-Mobile gave the world the first taste of a mobile OS that would soon rival (and surpass) the other options already on the table, but outside of the forgettable Backflip (and the nowhere-to-be-found Aero), there’s been no Android to speak of on AT&T. HTC has somehow managed to break down the blue and orange walls, piercing the heart of a hardened operator and squeezing a delightful mid-range Android smartphone into a lineup that’s about to be monumentally overshadowed by the iPhone 4. So, is the HTC Aria worth the $129.99 that you’ll be forced to pay on a 2-year agreement when it ships on June 20th? Read on to find out.

Sure we’ve already had our eyes all over Logitech’s CE4100-powered Google TV box and given its WiFi controls on iPhone and Nexus One a try, but we didn’t know exactly what to look for (or, according to Steve, what we’d probably be avoiding) when it hit stores. That’s been put to rest, as the above picture we received reveals we can expect the Logitech Revue with Google TV. Obviously reminiscent of the “with Google” Android branding on handset, the name also ties into its ability to bring together multiple forms of entertainment, we’ll see this this fall if slick branding is enough to get buyers and developers behind the return of Web TV.

Basically a quick update to show a few features and a few methods of doing things the right way, More videos coming soon, as I find out good stuff to make our phones the ultimate phone, pc, radio, laptop, tv, you name it, we are almost there. At the last part of the vid, I cannot stress enough how good flash works, and how these idiots keep trying to make themselves believe it’s flawed or sloppy or kills battery or laggy, IT’S NOTHING BUT AN ASSET ADDITION TO OUR PHONES. I can’t see myself without it after this phone. Iphone 4 news: the glass it’s made of, will break in about 2-3 drops, multi task is limited, the 2 cameras for live video calls is limited to WI-FI only. They copied our 2 microphones for noise cancellation, still stuck with AT&T for another 2 years, AT&T limited data for customers no longer having unlimited data. The display has good resolution although the screen is too small to take full advantage, not sure what is actually new or good about the phone lol.

HTC Aria goes official for AT&T, gets toyed with on video (update: $130, coming June 20) http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-aria-goes-official-for-att-gets-toyed-with-on-video-update-130-coming-june-20.php http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-aria-goes-official-for-att-gets-toyed-with-on-video-update-130-coming-june-20.php#comments Mon, 14 Jun 2010 13:21:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-aria-goes-official-for-att-gets-toyed-with-on-video-update-130-coming-june-20.php

Um… okay? In what’s easily one of the most curious product introductions of the year (in terms of method, not design), AT&T has seemingly just made official the first not-awful Android device to be sold in subsidized fashion for its network. ‘Course, those who don’t mind ponying up for an out-of-contract phone have been able to to pick up an AT&T-compatible Nexus One for a few months now, but contract lovers have been stuck with the Motorola Backflip and the promise of Dell’s admittedly underwhelming Aero. Dante Martin, a product manager at the carrier, has followed up on a prior video with a confirmation that the HTC Aria is indeed “launching on AT&T,” though he gives precisely no specifications in his address posted after the break. All we know is that the phone will most certainly ship with Sense and an optical trackball, but mum’s the word on a price or release. For now, anyway. Here’s hoping this is just the beginning — AT&T needs a decent dose of Android in the worst possible way.

[Thanks, Travis]

Update: Ah, and here’s the official presser. It’s a mid-range phone with Android 2.1, a five megapixel camera, 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchpanel, inbuilt WiFi and support for 7.2Mbps HSPA. There’s also a soft-touch back and a total weight of around four ounces, and AT&T says this one will be available on June 20th nationwide for $129.99 on a two-year contract (after $100 mail-in rebate, of course). As for specs? There’s a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM 7227 processor, proximity sensor, integrated GPS, a digital compass, light sensor, 512MB ROM / 384MB RAM, a microSD card slot (2GB included) and a 1,200mAh battery good for up to six hours of yapping.

HTC EVO 4G’s graphics capped at 30FPS? http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-evo-4gs-graphics-capped-at-30fps.php http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-evo-4gs-graphics-capped-at-30fps.php#comments Fri, 11 Jun 2010 01:57:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-evo-4gs-graphics-capped-at-30fps.php Reports are flying in from across the internet — and by that we mean the xda-developers and Google Code forums — that the EVO 4G might have something of a framerate issue. It seems that the device is “locked in” at 30 frames per second both in 2D (Canvas) and 3D (openGL) modes, while anecdotally, a phone like the Hero hits 54fps on average and has “smoother scrolling” in the menus. This apparently is visible both with the standard Sense UI installed and with the Froyo preview build, although in the latter case the Nexus One bootup video is 60fps before halving upon reaching the home screen.

So, wherein lies the culprit? For Google’s part, Android framework engineer “Romain Guy” responded to one thread reasserting the platform team’s “target was, is and will be 60fps.” We can’t imagine it’s related to the hardware given the EVO’s impressive specs. Some fingers, ergo, are being pointed towards firmware. This wouldn’t be the first time HTC’s handsets have come under scrutiny for troubling graphical performance — 2008 was not the company’s finest year in that department. Whatever the reason is, we just want a quick resolve — after all, it’s just not fair when our Hero-carrying buddies are scoring better benchmarks.

Yes, the underclocked Snapdragon slate that never made it stateside has just received its own Android 2.2 port. Though still in early alpha with no Wi-Fi or camera functionality and plenty of bugs to boot, the freshly frozen yogurt has the Liquid turning tricks already — with very playable-looking framerates in Raging Thunder II and Flash video support. Early adopters note that the phone isn’t terribly stable at higher CPU frequencies, so don’t expect to push that processor much higher than stock, but even 768MHz is reportedly nice and snappy when you’re running Android 2.2. Video proof after the break, and you’ll find the unfinished ROM at our more coverage link if you’re the adventurous sort. [Thanks, Miroslav]

How would you change Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10? http://lemenem.com/tech/how-would-you-change-sony-ericssons-xperia-x10.php http://lemenem.com/tech/how-would-you-change-sony-ericssons-xperia-x10.php#comments Sat, 05 Jun 2010 03:03:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/how-would-you-change-sony-ericssons-xperia-x10.php

You may not agree with Sony Ericsson’s time table, nor their decision on what flavor of Android to use, but let’s face it: you were intrigued when SE told you the Xperia X10 would be its first Google-fied smartphone. To date, the X10 has yet to gain the kind of global appreciation shared by the Motorola Droid, Nexus One or iPhone, but that’s not to say quite a few of you haven’t ended up with one. We had our fair share of gripes and grins when reviewing the thing, but as you well know, this is no place for us to rehash what we’ve already explained. Rather, we’re curious to know how exactly you feel about the Xperia X10. In what can only be described as the most competitive smartphone landscape in the history of the world, the X10 is going up against some huge players; do you feel that the product SE has delivered is up to snuff? Would you have rather seen a different version of Android from the start? Any issues with the touch panel, camera, or industrial design? Digging those hard buttons below the display? We have to imaging that the X11 is already floating around in someone’s mind, and chances are high that they’ll be looking in comments for advice on where to turn. No pressure.

While we absolutely adore our Nexus One — now that it’s got a bellyful of that fabulous frozen yogurt — one of the most exciting Android additions shown off at Google I/O isn’t actually slated for Froyo: the ability to push apps and music over the air from computer to phone. The underlying framework apparently is, though, and thus a bite-sized version of the functionality is already available at Google Code. If you’re one of the lucky few running Android 2.2, you can get an extension for Chrome and Firefox web browsers that will let you push URLs, Maps and YouTube video links direct to your device using a Google Account. You can think of it as an early foray into a Continuous Client, perhaps, sharing with yourself before you head to a business meeting. Better yet, share an account with a group of friends and push interesting items to everyone on the go. See how (and see it in action) right after the break.

You’ve seen it in San Jose, you’ve seen plenty of it in Vietnam, and now, apparently, you’re seeing the iPhone 4G waving at you from the center of Europe, namely the Czech Republic. We haven’t been able to corroborate that these fellas do indeed have a legitimate next-gen iPhone in their paws, but hey, that’s what they claim. The guys from superiphone.cz have gone above and beyond the leaker’s call of duty, by taking the supposed next-gen screen under a microscope and figuring out its pixel density and display technology. According to them, the new iPhone will sport an IPS panel, much like the other handheld device Apple introduced this year, with a cool 960 x 640 resolution. This quadruples the total number of pixels from the iPhone 3GS — making rescaling of current apps a straightforward affair — while also giving Apple the right to claim the highest pixel density yet seen on a phone. You’ll find similarly zoomed-in pics of the Nexus One and iPod touch screens at the source, and the answers to all your iPhone-related questions at WWDC in a few days’ time.

Look, the N900 might be sitting at the top of Nokia’s handset pyramid in terms of capabilities, but as we’ve said all along, the N900 is not a mass-market device. Nokia’s been very clear that the N900 was launched as a means to strengthen its Maemo development community (on the path to MeeGo we now know). And by all accounts, it’s done just that while winning a rabid fanbase of nerds in the process. Nevertheless, Reuters uses Gartner’s estimate of less than 100,000 units sold in the device’s first five months as proof that Nokia can’t mount a challenge to RIM and Apple. True the numbers are paltry compared to the 8.75 million iPhones Apple sold from January to March, but a more apt comparison might be the oft noted Nexus One sales that reached just 135k units moved after 74 days. Regardless, in its defense, Alberto Torres, head of Nokia’s solutions business said that “Sales have substantially exceeded expectations.” So yeah, Nokia has problems, but the N900 isn’t wasn’t one of them.

Update: While Nokia doesn’t normally give out detailed sales figures per device, we’ve just been told that more than 100,000 N900s sold in the first five weeks — not months — globally.

If for some reason none of the current Android slates have tickled your fancy, not the Nexus One nor the Droid Incredible nor even the Evo, maybe Acer’s Stream is for you. It sports Nexus One-like specs, with a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and 512MB of RAM. It’s five megapixel camera can record 720p video and it can also play back content at the same resolution with support for Xvid, WMV HD, and others. There’s an HDMI port on-board in case you want to bring that content to the big(ger) screen, and it’ll even act as a DLNA and UPnP streamer on WiFi, with dedicated play/pause, fast-foward, and rewind buttons. This could be the most media-friendly Android smartphone we’ve yet seen, and that it’s already made its way into the hands of a previewer (as shown in the favoloso video after the break) and has passed FCC scrutineering is a very, very good sign that this could be serving up your home media collection soon.

Being completely unable to keep a popular device in stock is a great problem to have, we suppose — but considering that Verizon Wireless’ Lowell McAdam believes he could sell “twice” the number of Droid Incredibles that he has available, that’s got to be a bit of a bummer if you’re one of the company’s bean counters (or a would-be buyer, for that matter). In a talk at a Barclays Capital conference today, McAdam made it clear that component shortages were to blame for the high-end Android handset’s general unavailability — specifically the Samsung-sourced AMOLED display, which is seeing duty in more phones all the time and will likely be in short supply for a while yet. At the present, new buyers need to wait until at least mid-June to get their Droid Incredible if they order online, and the Nexus One’s brief inventory situation is very likely related; since Samsung is using a ton of AMOLED displays in its own devices, doesn’t this all seem like a conflict of interest?

If you want to know what Google meant by “more retail availability” for the Nexus One when it talked about spiking its first-party phone store, take a good, hard look at our brave new world here. Independent retailer i Wireless has started offering a number of Android devices in the past few days, including the Nexus One — a product that’s still extraordinarily difficult to find outside of Google’s own site, especially since none of the American Big Four carriers intend to offer it directly. It turns out that i Wireless is an authorized T-Mobile affiliate, so they’re selling the phone for $299.95 on contract after rebate — a good bit more than the $179 Google charges, but in return, it looks like you can select just about any plan T-Mobile offers (Google restricts you to the Even More 500 plan to get the subsidy). We think we already miss the old way of getting these things.

Hearing Google say that Android 2.2 would be filtering out to the Nexus One in short order was no huge shock — after all, it’s Google’s first smartphone. But for those who purchased Motorola’s first heavy-hitter since the RAZR, it looks as if they’ll be close behind in enjoying the spoils. According to a Motorola spokesperson quoted at Slashgear (full statement is past the break), the company is expecting the original Droid to get Android 2.2 “in the near future,” though he / she wouldn’t go so far as to provide specifics beyond that. Better still, the same person stated that Motorola is excited about Froyo in general, and it’s “looking forward to integrating it on [the firm's] Android-based devices as [the software] is made available.” We hate to read too deeply into anything, but “devices” sure gets our digits tingling.

[Thanks, Alex]

Believe it or not, your newly-upgraded Nexus One isn’t the first Android smartphone to have Adobe Flash video capability, nor even the first to play said content on a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU — Europe’s been rocking the HTC Desire since April, which sports a little something called Flash Lite even on the older Android 2.1 OS. In these articles, he’ll explore where our industry is and where it’s going — on both micro and macro levels — with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.

A few weeks ago I sat down with the father of Android, Andy Rubin. Andy’s a super smart person, having done stints at Apple, General Magic, WebTV and Danger before starting the Android project. We talked about a lot of things, and we particularly spent time discussing Android fragmentation. I’ve written in the past about my concern that the Android platform is fragmenting much like desktop Linux has over the years, and the potential for the platform to turn into a patchwork of devices and vendor specific modifications that bear little relationship with each other. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my conversation with Andy, and I’ve rewritten this column more than a few times as a result.

Today, there are at least five different versions of Android on the market. Many of them are highly customized to allow for new features and device differentiation, but that same customization also makes it harder for vendors to update them to the latest versions. New releases and versions of Android are often outdated by newer versions in the span of just a few weeks. For example, the Nexus One when released was capable of running apps like Google Earth that devices such as the Droid could not, because it ran Android 2.0, not 2.1.Tablet vendors complain their Android offerings lack features such as Android Market because Google forbids them to install the marketplace app, forcing them to create proprietary alternatives. It would appear Android is indeed fragmenting — but perhaps there are other forces at work.

When I spoke with Andy, he pointed out there are several classical symptoms of platform fragmentation. First, older APIs no longer work and break in new releases. Second, multiple application marketplaces offer different applications that lack uniformity across platforms. Both of these are true when you look at desktop Linux. Neither are true of Android.

It was only a matter of time. The direct link to download the Android 2.2 “Froyo” update from Google’s servers has been found. According to XDA-Developers, it only works if you have a “non-rooted stock ERE27 system” Nexus One. Meet the requirements? Can’t wait any longer? Download link below.

Update: Want no pre-conditions? Here’s another link, albeit less official so proceed at your own risk. [Thanks, Justin!]

Sometimes it’s good to be the chosen child, the special one, and in the eyes of Google the Nexus One is that special phone — at least for the moment. As such it seems to have been given a special treat: access to Froyo, earlier than expected. TechCrunch’s MG Siegler is reporting that his handset received Android 2.2 overnight. So far we’re not hearing too many other reports of folks seeing this update, but that could be thanks to everyone sleeping off a week of exciting announcements. Sound off in comments if you’re waking up to this frosty, low-calorie snack.

Update: We’re not sure how this is being rolled out, as hardly anyone is seeing updates, but via Droidnytt we found a number of reports on Twitter that people are indeed seeing the update.

Update 2: Count us among the lucky few who just received the OTA Froyo update, to our original T-Mobile-based device.

Update 3: We’ve done some additional investigation, and as far as we can tell, Google is only updating review Nexus Ones that had been provided to the press — not off-the-shelf phones. We’ll stay on this and let you know more as soon as we do.

Why, thanks Google! Just a day after wrapping up a rather monumental Google I/O event in Northern California, the company’s official show Twitter account has belted out a tidbit that just about every attendee was wondering about. According to the outfit, Android 2.2 (yeah, that’s Froyo for the inexperienced) will be “made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks,” and it’ll be hitting up the HTC-built Nexus One in the “next few weeks.” That’s music to our ears, and if you’re unsure what kind of impact this will have on your own life, feel free to take a deep dive into this right here.

[Thanks, Alex]

For a company with as rich of a reputation for landscape QWERTY sliders as HTC has, you’d think they’d be tripping over themselves to release a truly high-end Android phone with a keyboard, but not so much — the closest they’ve come so far would be the midrange myTouch 3G Slide, and that puppy ain’t even out yet. We broke the news last night about three seemingly new names for upcoming HTC devices — Vision, LED, and Glacier — and Dutch site Tweakers.net is now reporting on a user agent profile for the Vision that lists the device featuring that mythical holy trinity: WVGA display, QWERTY, and Android. Furthermore, they’ve got the director of HTC Benelux on record saying that they’re planning more Android phones with keyboards — so that’s a Good Thing to hear at a time when huge slates seem to be stealing the show in every segment of the market. With the Nexus One, Desire, Droid Incredible, and EVO 4G all alive and well, we think these guys would be well-served to play with other form factors for a minute or two, yeah?

Well, who saw this coming? Froyo — yes, the one and only Android 2.2 that got released via SDK today — has already begun its grand voyage into hacky, totally unofficial device ROMs that are available to unhealthily brave users. The two we’ve got for your perusal here are for the Nexus One (of course) and Verizon’s Droid Eris, of all things; our understanding is that both of them are ridiculously unstable and unpractical for actual use at this point, but it’s patently obvious that these guys aren’t going to sleep until there are some solid firmware binaries on the interwebs. Mountain Dew Code Red and bottles of No-Doz, fellas.

Much to our surprise at the time, when Adobe sent us a Flash 10.1-enabled Nexus One for testing, the phone came preloaded with a preview build of Android 2.2 — a.k.a. “Froyo” — the apparent turning point for curbing Android fragmentation due for a very public unveiling today at Google I/O. We’ve had a day or two to dig into it, and while we’re surely missing some improvements here or there (Google was unable to provide us a changelog as of this writing), we’ve spent pretty much all our waking moments combing through every virtual nook and cranny. So what can Eclair alumni expect from the revised platform? Read on for more!

HTC EVO 4G review http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-evo-4g-review.php http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-evo-4g-review.php#comments Thu, 20 May 2010 01:45:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/htc-evo-4g-review.php

As a mobile platform, the EVO 4G’s Android foundation is still an infant — well, okay, perhaps it’s a tweener — but in its two-odd years in the public spotlight, the list of truly revolutionary devices to use it has been a significant one: the G1 for being the first to market; the Nexus One for ushering in a new (and subsequently killed) retail model; perhaps the CLIQ for introducing Motorola to the platform or the Droid for bringing the company some desperately needed, long overdue success. For the moment, anyway, a whopping fraction of the world’s most important phones are running Google’s little experiment.

Needless to say, Sprint, HTC, and quite frankly, many of us have come to expect the EVO 4G to join that short list for some obvious reasons. Put simply, its magnificent list of specs reads as though it was scribbled on a napkin after a merry band of gadget nerds got tipsy at the watering hole and started riffing about their idea of the ultimate mobile device: a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 4.3-inch WVGA display, 8 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, HDMI-out, and WiMAX compatibility. Of course, the list of potential deal-breakers for a phone is as long as the EVO 4G’s display is wide; to put it another way, there are countless ways HTC, Sprint, or even Google could’ve screwed this thing up. So does this moderately intimidating black slab of pure engineering and marketing — this high-profile bet on Sprint’s future — deliver the goods? Read on.

In a volatile Android ecosystem where bigger and better phones pop up every week, your Nexus One might be feeling a little obsolete. Frankly, there’s hardly a better way to cheer it up than by installing an operating system that’s a little more its speed. You know, not every smartphone has to be putting down maxed-out hardware. That’s a lesson that Nokia is certainly taking to heart, concentrating many of its latest efforts on lower-end Symbian devices that it hopes will capture entire new swaths of users that’d otherwise be buying dumbphones with half the functionality (and far less than half of the revenue potential). In the world of Android, though, recent devices like the EVO 4G, Droid, Droid Incredible, and Nexus One have admittedly caused us to grow accustomed to the idea that we should all be using blazingly fast processors and huge WVGA displays.

In reality, of course, Android is an extraordinarily scalable platform; there’s a whole world of hardware (and around $200 of on-contract pricing) below today’s latest round of “superphones.” At $100 on a two-year deal, the LG Ally sort of typifies what we’d expect out of a midrange Android device right now — a gap-filler that can capture users seeking a Droid experience on a Kin Two budget. So does it hold up in the day-to-day grind, or are you going to be begging for a Droid by day two? Let’s find out.

Google changes Nexus One plans, will stop selling handsets online http://lemenem.com/tech/google-changes-nexus-one-plans-will-stop-selling-handsets-online.php http://lemenem.com/tech/google-changes-nexus-one-plans-will-stop-selling-handsets-online.php#comments Fri, 14 May 2010 17:49:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/google-changes-nexus-one-plans-will-stop-selling-handsets-online.php

Although Google launched the Nexus One with grand plans to radically change the way consumers purchased phones and service, it looks like the experiment has fizzled to an end — the company just announced that will eventually stop selling handsets online and instead partner with carriers to sell the N1 in-store while using its website to promote “a variety of Android phones available globally.” Google says customers simply want a hands-on experience before buying a phone, but we’d say the lack of subsidies from any carrier except T-Mobile and some serious customer service issues probably played in killing Google’s original sales strategy — and of course, both Verizon and Sprint essentially refused the N1 in favor of the bespoke Incredible and EVO 4G. We’d also say that Android as a whole will remain unaffected, since the Nexus One was never a huge seller, but it’s still rare that a company simply gives up a business model like this, and we don’t know if Google will ever follow up with a successor to the Nexus One. The Google Phone is dead, people — long live the Google Phone.

Update: We just asked Google about future devices and support for current Nexus One owners, here’s what they said:

On the future: We will continue working with our partners to bring cutting-edge new Android handsets to market, but we have nothing to announce right now.

On support: This announcement doesn’t have any immediate impact on support for consumers who purchase Nexus One through the web store.

Cellbots get Nexus One upgrade, ad-hoc motion control (video) http://lemenem.com/tech/cellbots-get-nexus-one-upgrade-ad-hoc-motion-control-video.php http://lemenem.com/tech/cellbots-get-nexus-one-upgrade-ad-hoc-motion-control-video.php#comments Wed, 12 May 2010 22:16:53 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/cellbots-get-nexus-one-upgrade-ad-hoc-motion-control-video.php

Sprint and Verizon may have shunned the Nexus One, but that doesn’t mean the handsets can’t be put to good use: these Android-controlled, Arduino-powered Cellbots now feature the one true Googlephone as the CPU. At Intel’s 2010 International Engineering and Science Fair in San Jose, we got our hot little hands on the DIY truckbots for the first time, and found to our surprise they’d been imbued with accelerometer-based motion control. Grabbing a Nexus One off a nearby table, we simply tilted the handset forward, back, left and right to make the Cellbot wheel about accordingly, bumping playfully into neighbors and streaming live video the whole time. We were told the first handset wirelessly relayed instructions to the second using Google Chat, after which point a Python script determined the bot’s compass facing and activated Arduino-rigged motors via Bluetooth, but the real takeaway here is that robots never fail to amuse. Watch our phone-skewing, bot-driving antics in a video after the break, and see what we mean.

Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ and Flash run like butter on Nexus One (update) http://lemenem.com/tech/android-2-2-froyo-and-flash-run-like-butter-on-nexus-one-update.php http://lemenem.com/tech/android-2-2-froyo-and-flash-run-like-butter-on-nexus-one-update.php#comments Wed, 12 May 2010 04:10:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/android-2-2-froyo-and-flash-run-like-butter-on-nexus-one-update.php

While Adobe evangelist Ryan Stewart wants us to focus on Flash 10.1 performance — admittedly impressive — running on his Nexus One, we can’t help but be distracted by the Android 2.2 “Froyo” build apparently supporting his device. Can you blame us? It’s not like we’re alone with waning interest in Flash, especially for video playback. Anyway, from the looks of the homescreen in the grab above, we’ll be treated to an updated launcher, Android tutorial, and global search box when the OS is revealed (presumably) at Google I/O starting May 19. And with the giant Froyo statue apparently already delivered to the GooglePlex’s confectionary art show, well, the stage is set for 2.2 to be launched in time for Adobe’s planned June release of Flash 10.1. Get your glimpse into the future of Flash and Android in the video after the break.

Update: How much faster is a Nexus One running Froyo? 450 percent faster, according to the Android Police. They claim to have a device running the as-yet-unreleased firmware that can perform over 37 million floating-point operations per second in the Linpack benchmark… compared to about 7 megaflops without. Oh yeeaaah.

[Thanks, Taylor]

Meganet’s Dominator I snoops on four GSM convos at once, fits in your overnight bag http://lemenem.com/tech/meganets-dominator-i-snoops-on-four-gsm-convos-at-once-fits-in-your-overnight-bag.php http://lemenem.com/tech/meganets-dominator-i-snoops-on-four-gsm-convos-at-once-fits-in-your-overnight-bag.php#comments Mon, 10 May 2010 22:17:04 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/meganets-dominator-i-snoops-on-four-gsm-convos-at-once-fits-in-your-overnight-bag.php

“Dominator I” sounds more like a monster truck than a collection of small boxes that collectively erase 20 years of relatively secure wireless phone service, doesn’t it? Alas, what you’re looking at here is a convenient, plug-and-play solution for exploiting the hard work the world’s hacking community has put into cracking the A5/1 encryption used on GSM networks in Europe and the US over the past few years. The system consists of two nondescript white boxes, two directional antennas that you’ll point in the direction of your victim, and a laptop that you can use to get a glimpse at all of the phones currently connected to your nearest cell site and record up to four active calls simultaneously — and if you’re more of the text messaging type, Dominator I’s got you covered there, too, with full access to SMS. The company claims that the system was “declassified only last week” and is completely undetectable both by the operator and the end user, putting it in this rare nexus of “awesome” and “completely terrifying.” It can’t do A5/3, but now that it’s been cracked in a somewhat practical way, we’re sure the Dominator II can’t be far behind. Follow the break for Meganet’s video of the system in action.

Sprint cans Nexus One in favor of EVO 4G http://lemenem.com/tech/sprint-cans-nexus-one-in-favor-of-evo-4g.php http://lemenem.com/tech/sprint-cans-nexus-one-in-favor-of-evo-4g.php#comments Mon, 10 May 2010 20:39:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/sprint-cans-nexus-one-in-favor-of-evo-4g.php

In light of Verizon’s recent decision (or was that Google’s decision?) to say goodnight to the Nexus One in favor of the Droid Incredible, we thought it might be wise to reach out to Sprint and get a comment on its own version — the EVO 4G is just around the corner, of course, and it’s lying in wait to cast a long, long shadow over any other Android device in Sprint’s lineup. Sure enough, the carrier says that it’s now taking a pass on Google’s first “superphone,” seeing how the EVO 4G is basically better in every respect: WiMAX support, larger screen, better camera, and so on. Of course, this might peeve a few folks who’d prefer stock Android over HTC’s Sense UI, but otherwise, the move seems to be a perfectly logical one. Oh, and as for that EVO? No update on a launch window, but Sprint says that it’s still targeting Summer, thank goodness.

We knew the Wii Controller Demo app (now known as “Wii Controller IME”) was close to being able to interact with Android in a meaningful way, but we certainly didn’t expect to see Average Joes playing Donkey Kong on their Nexus One devices this soon. Not that we’re kvetching or anything — and in fact, we’d argue that this landed at a perfect time for you hard-workin’ Android owners to give this all a spin over the weekend. Jump on past the break for a look at the setup procedure as well as bona fide proof that a Wiimote and Android can indeed work together for the greater good. Mind those coconuts, though.

Droid Incredible versus Nexus One: cameraphone showdown http://lemenem.com/tech/droid-incredible-versus-nexus-one-cameraphone-showdown.php http://lemenem.com/tech/droid-incredible-versus-nexus-one-cameraphone-showdown.php#comments Wed, 05 May 2010 13:56:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/droid-incredible-versus-nexus-one-cameraphone-showdown.php

With all this talk of the Droid Incredible ousting the Nexus One from Verizon Wireless, having a better multitouch implementation, and just being newer and shinier, you might think this comparison of cameras is just mercilessly piling on the pain for the original Googlephone. After all, the Nexus One and its 5 megapixel sensor came out a good few months ahead of the 8 megapixel Droid Incredible, so surely this battle would be over before it’s even begun? Not so fast, says Android and Me, whose diligent testers have put the two HTC handsets through a side-by-side shootout. As it turns out, the Nexus One rather swept the contest in both naturally and flash-lit shots, while the Incredible habitually exhibited a blue hue in less than perfectly lit photos. Both cameras were adept at taking excellent daylight photos, as is to be expected, but the devil is as usual in the details — and you can find all of them at the source link below.

[Thanks, Matt]

Now here’s an innovative concept — instead of doing separate videos for an unboxing and a disassembly of the Droid Incredible, why not combine them into one? And while you’re at it, turn that into a stop-motion animation and include well timed sound effects for comedic relief. Make sure to include intimate closeups of the Incredible’s spectacularly red innards, then finish off with a sped-up reconstruction and reboot of the handsome Nexus One killer. Got all that? Good, now drop the video after the break and let the people enjoy it.

Adobe shows off prototype Android tablet running Air and Flash ‘flawlessly’ (video) http://lemenem.com/tech/adobe-shows-off-prototype-android-tablet-running-air-and-flash-flawlessly-video.php http://lemenem.com/tech/adobe-shows-off-prototype-android-tablet-running-air-and-flash-flawlessly-video.php#comments Wed, 05 May 2010 01:44:00 +0000 admin

Well, here’s something of a surprise. In addition to demonstrating Flash running on phones like the Nexus One and Palm Pre at the now-happening Web 2.0 Expo, Adobe also has a prototype Android tablet of some sort on hand that, according to Zedomax, runs Flash and Air apps “flawlessly.” Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any details at all on the tablet itself, and judging from the looks of things, it is a prototype in the truest sense of the word (check out the other shot after the break). It does seem to deliver the goods when it comes to Air and Flash, however, with it able to run Wired’s Air-based magazine app and play YouTube videos without so much as a hiccup, although we’d definitely like to see it in a few more taxing situations. See for yourself in a pair of all too brief videos after the break.

Skyfire 2.0 beta for Android video preview! http://lemenem.com/tech/skyfire-2-0-beta-for-android-video-preview.php http://lemenem.com/tech/skyfire-2-0-beta-for-android-video-preview.php#comments Thu, 29 Apr 2010 18:27:00 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/skyfire-2-0-beta-for-android-video-preview.php

We just spent a few minutes playing with the beta version of Skyfire 2.0 for Android that was released today, and we’ll cut to the chase: this is easily the best browser we’ve used on the platform. Clearly we’ll need to spend more time with it to make sure it can handle all the typical sites you’d want to visit while you’re on the road — but loading the desktop version of Engadget is always a great barometer for this sort of thing, and this browser rocked it. Rendering is about as reasonably fast as you can expect it to be (on our Snapdragon-powered Nexus One, anyhow), and everything we saw displayed spot-on perfect (save for embedded Flash, of course), but if you’re in a situation where you don’t need to see the full page or it looks screwy, you can toggle it to send an Android user agent right from the app’s toolbar below the URL field. It works just about as well as Steel and the built-in browser on a G1 we tested, and Flash videos work just fine there as well.

The browser touts compatibility with Flash videos, too, so we headed over to YouTube to try our hand at it; it immediately detected the presence of a video and popped up the so-called “SkyBar” at the bottom of the screen, where you can press the Video button to load the video in a new window. It doesn’t work embedded in the page, but considering how small your phone’s screen is, that’s really for the best — you get the full-screen experience, and in our testing, it looked fantastic. One downside is that you don’t seem to be able to scrub videos while they’re playing, but maybe this is something these guys can get patched up for the final release. Follow the break for our full video!

Update: One annoyance we’ve noticed is that pinch-to-zoom works in “steps” — it’s not smooth, which makes it pretty weird to use, but remember that Opera Mini doesn’t support it at all.

Fennec, Mozilla’s codeword for mobile Firefox builds, has just made its pre-alpha debut on Android. The tastefully named Vladimir Vukićević informs us that it’s pretty much a debug release, with unoptimized memory utilization and some quirks rebooting the app when it’s started and when add-ons are installed, but it is at a stage where the devs felt they could get useful feedback from a broader user base. It’s not yet available on the Android Market, so you’ll be needing to download it from the link below, and remember that you’ll have to have an Android 2.0 or higher device, with OpenGL ES 2.0 capabilities also being recommended. If you’ve got all those boxes ticked, get downloading and come back to tell us how that WeaveSync is working out for you. We’ve got video of an older build running on a Nexus one after the break, just to whet some appetites.

[Thanks, Jonathon]

Now this, this is all kinds of silly. Google has been busy updating its phone sales site, and the latest word for Verizon Wireless subscribers encourages them to look at the “similarly feature-packed” cousin of the Nexus One, the Incredible. Importantly, what’s missing from the new wording is the “coming soon” tag, suggesting that for all intents and purposes the Nexus has been obviated by the arrival of the Incredible. In a separate blog post updating us on carrier partnerships, Google again reiterates its mini-advert for the new HTC phone on Verizon while keeping mum about the Nexus One’s future. A true CDMA variant of le superphone should still be coming wearing Sprint regalia, but it’s disappointing to see Google use such doublespeak techniques. Is the Verizon Nexus canceled or not?

Update: We just heard back from Google — the Verizon Nexus One is dead; long live the Incredible. Here’s the official statement:

We won’t be selling a Nexus One with Verizon, and this is a reflection of the amazing innovation happening across the open Android ecosystem. Verizon Wireless customers who want an Android phone with the power of the Nexus One can get the Droid Incredible by HTC.

Now, that’s certainly reasonable, given the similarities between the Nexus One and the Incredible, but here’s a question: given that the Incredible runs Sense on top of Android, isn’t the closest Verizon analogue to the Nexus One experience actually the Droid, which runs stock Android 2.1? Considering Motorola’s recent moves away from Google, maybe this is a sign of something deeper.

You might recall that fascinating video a while back showing the Nexus One’s touch sensor getting all discombobulated when the tester’s multitouch fingerwork started to get a little too fancy, and now, Android Central has confirmed that Verizon’s Droid Incredible doesn’t suffer the same fate — but why is that, exactly? Android and Me is reporting that the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G both employ an Atmel maXTouch sensor with unlimited touch support — a relatively new product launched in late ‘09 — whereas the Nexus One is using Synaptics’ older ClearPad 2000, which was designed to top out with simple two-finger gestures like pinch zoom. The upshot? Complicated multitouch games might end up being less playable (or downright unusable) on the Nexus One, but the silver lining is that HTC’s gone ahead and rolled out better components for its latest round of devices that should prevent this from being a problem going forward. Follow the break for Android Central’s video of the Droid Incredible multitouching circles around the Nexus One — figuratively speaking, of course.

Nexus One launches on Vodafone UK this Friday, April 30 http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-launches-on-vodafone-uk-this-friday-april-30.php http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-launches-on-vodafone-uk-this-friday-april-30.php#comments Mon, 26 Apr 2010 10:17:18 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/nexus-one-launches-on-vodafone-uk-this-friday-april-30.php

The first European carrier for the Nexus One is all set to start offering Google’s superphone for free on two-year contracts costing £35 ($54) or more per month. Pre-orders are being taken today and full retail availability is slated for April 30. It’s kind of an anticlimax now that the Incredible has started stalking the American prairies, but we’re sure there’ll be plenty of Brits who’ve been waiting with baited breath for this. There’ll be 18- and 24-month contract options, with prices starting at £25 per month, and a 1GB 3G data allowance is included together with a 1GB WiFi allowance via BT Openzone hotspots. Not exactly the most generous price plans we’ve ever heard of, but then the handset’s looking eminently affordable with its zero cash up front requirement. Full PR after the break.

Sirius XM app for Android ‘coming soon’ http://lemenem.com/tech/sirius-xm-app-for-android-coming-soon.php http://lemenem.com/tech/sirius-xm-app-for-android-coming-soon.php#comments Sat, 24 Apr 2010 08:15:34 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/sirius-xm-app-for-android-coming-soon.php
iPhone and iPod touch users may have had a Sirius XM app for close to a year now, but it looks like Android users will soon finally be able to get in on some mobile streaming as well. While there’s still no specific launch date, the app is apparently “coming soon,” and looks to be mostly identical to its iPhone OS counterpart, complete with support for streaming over both WiFi and 3G. Somewhat curiously, however, Sirius XM seems to be saying that the app will only be available for the Droid and Nexus One, although that’s a bit puzzling considering they’re not the only Android 2.1-ready phones with fast processors (if those are indeed the only requirements). Full press release is after the break, and you can sign up to be notified of the app at the link below.

Google, Broadcom close to enabling 802.11n on Nexus One? http://lemenem.com/tech/google-broadcom-close-to-enabling-802-11n-on-nexus-one.php http://lemenem.com/tech/google-broadcom-close-to-enabling-802-11n-on-nexus-one.php#comments Fri, 23 Apr 2010 11:15:31 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/google-broadcom-close-to-enabling-802-11n-on-nexus-one.php We need a name for this whole drama — we like “n-Gate,” but it’s a little too close to N-Gage for comfort. Anyhow, you might recall that Google briefly listed 802.11n support in the Nexus One around the time of its release, then wiped all mention of it only to have iFixit’s teardown reveal on no uncertain terms that the Broadcom-sourced wireless chipset was definitely capable of rocking it. The word on the street is that Google and Broadcom have just pushed new drivers for the chipset into the Android repository that enable the functionality, which likely means that future versions of the platform will support it — Froyo, for instance — including anything the Nexus One should happen to be graced with in the future. Faster wireless is always a good thing, as far as we’re concerned… especially, you know, when Google closes the book on 3G issues. Follow the break for claimed video proof that this 11n business is all too real.

Google ‘no longer investigating’ fix for Nexus One 3G issues, advises ‘changing your location’ http://lemenem.com/tech/google-no-longer-investigating-fix-for-nexus-one-3g-issues-advises-changing-your-location.php http://lemenem.com/tech/google-no-longer-investigating-fix-for-nexus-one-3g-issues-advises-changing-your-location.php#comments Thu, 22 Apr 2010 08:15:43 +0000 admin http://lemenem.com/tech/google-no-longer-investigating-fix-for-nexus-one-3g-issues-advises-changing-your-location.php

Looking back through our archives, you’ll find plenty of user dissatisfaction with the 3G reception on Google’s Nexus One. Blamed alternately on T-Mobile’s inferior 3G coverage and on software bugs, the problem was expected to be banished with an over-the-air update in early February. The update came, but the trouble also stayed. It might now be time to finally lay those last lingering hopes for rectification to rest, as Google has directly responded to calls for a bigger and better OTA patch by explaining that it’s no longer working on “further engineering improvements.” That’s a pretty conclusive sign that the problem is in the hardware, particularly when you peruse the support thread in question and the reception comparisons users have been doing with other handsets. Well, at least you know for sure now.

[Thanks, Ryan]

Talk about random gifts from the ether. British Android device owners are waking up this morning to discover their robot-themed operating system has gone and upgraded itself overnight. We’ve confirmed for ourselves that Google Maps Navigation — yes, the free turn-by-turn stuff with voice directions — has made its fully functional way across the Atlantic. This is the 4.1.1 Beta released on April 6 to US customers, but as we say, it’s now working over in Blighty as well. We’ve tested it out on a Desire and Nexus One from HTC, with the latter offering the extra-cool option to aurally instruct your Google search bar to “navigate to” your destination. Check out the gallery below for some visual edification.

[Thanks, Tes]

Update: We’re now also sure the full Navigation service works on at least some Android 1.6 devices, such as the Dell Mini 5 and a reported Sony Ericsson X10 success over on the xda-developers thread.

If you aren’t yet on board, direct your Android 1.6 or above device to the Android Market and get navigating.

Whether it’s branded the Mini 5, the Streak, the Streak 5, or something else entirely, we can say with certainty that Dell’s going to be hitting the Android market hard in 2010 — but we didn’t realize it’d be hitting this hard. It looks like the company might be taking a tack similar to Google’s with the Nexus One, because a second variant of product code M01M just garnered FCC approval — this time featuring WCDMA Band IV in place of Bands II and V, which means it’ll work on T-Mobile’s airwaves instead of AT&T’s. In lieu of a carrier deal, could Dell be looking to blow this out on as many carriers as it possibly can? We hope so — as long as our wallets can stomach the unsubsidized hit.

At this point, the HTC Incredible should seem like pretty familiar territory to our readers. We first caught wind of the device in a ROM leak back in December of 2009, and shortly thereafter saw lots of little snippets on the phone that made it clear it was headed our way. Of course, it’s a potent combination that’s been put together here — an HTC-made, Verizon-locked device sporting a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 8GB of internal storage, 748MB of ROM, a microSD slot (with support for up to 32GB cards), an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and autofocus, 480 x 800 AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, and most importantly, Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense UI on-board. The combo of America’s largest (and some say best) 3G network with a super-fast, Sense-equipped Android phone is a match made in nerd heaven. We’ve seen a near-exact device in the HTC Desire — basically the Incredible for the European market — and the internals and screen technology are almost identical to the Nexus One, but the Incredible has a personality that’s all its own. So is this the next killer device on the US market? Or have we heard this tune before? Read on for the answers you seek!

Earlier this month, an unknown manufacturer had the dubious distinction of making our KIRF list, for building what appeared to be a Nexus One running iPhone OS. Mr. Blurrycam couldn’t tell for sure… but today the KIRFtastic handset has been unveiled in all its infringing glory. Dubbed the “TEG W3000,” the device is billed as a quad-band GSM worldphone with an accelerometer, WiFi and Bluetooth, front and back-facing 2 megapixel cameras, FM and analog TV tuners and Java support. While the iPhoney OS doesn’t seem to have a App Store hackjob, the phone certainly has apps; in an interface pic, we spotted eBuddy, Facebook and Skype alongside Maps and the Opera web browser. Hands-down the most exciting ripoff in recent memory. Now cautiously whistle a happy tune, and move along.

Speaking both of the Nexus One specifically and of the platform as a whole, the company said that “it is a profitable business for us… we are driving the business to be a profitable business,” some of the strongest language we’ve heard that Google intends to fully convert Android from a hobby into an integral part of its financials going forward. On a related note, the company also boasted on the call that it’s “seeing more than 60 thousand devices sold and activations daily,” which — by our rough math, anyhow — would work out to close to 22 million Android activations annually. Certainly seem like these guys have cemented their position as a mobile powerhouse, doesn’t it?

Though some information leaked out of Verizon’s pipes yesterday, HTC just got really real with the Droid Incredible at the 99% Conference in New York today. Specs are pretty much what we expected: Android 2.1 with Sense, an 8 megapixel cam, 1GHz Snapdragon (not the underclocked core we’d heard rumored before, thankfully), WiFi, and a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Basically, this unit is a Sense-ified HTC Nexus One with an up-spec’d camera and a penchant for Verizon’s airwaves — and for a whole lotta Android users, that’s exactly what the doctor ordered. It hits on April 29 for $199.99 on contract after a $100 mail-in rebate — but in the mean time, you’ll be able to pre-order starting on the 19th. Full PR after the break.

Update: We’ve also got a live shot of the device after the break. Thanks, Bryan!

Update 2: Verizon’s own Incredible site is now live — have fun over there! Thanks, Artem!

Yes, good people of Engadgetland, we finally have an official spec sheet for the eagerly awaited Incredible handset. A 3.7-inch OLED touchscreen leads the way, with an 800 x 480 resolution, which will offer the full Google Experience on Android version 2.1. That sounds remarkably like a refashioned Nexus One to us, even down to the 1GHz Snapdragon chip inside, but where the Droid Incredible differs is in its inclusion of Sense UI (á la the Desire) and an 8 megapixel autofocising camera. There’s also GPS and 8GB of integrated memory and you can find the complete document at the source below. Not long to wait now.

[Thanks, Henry]

Occasionally we’ve had strangers — very likely non-Engadget readers — coming up to us and ask, “Sorry mate, but is that the iPad?” To which we reply, “No, it’s the Dell Mini 5.” This may sound like a silly boo-boo to make, but there is this common misconception of the iPad being just “a bigger iPhone” while not knowing how much bigger it is (despite our best effort). To clear this up once and for all, we’ve brough the two devices in question together — the Mini 5 / Streak smartphone on the left, and the iPad on the right. Now it’s up to you guys to spread the love.

As a bonus, we also threw in various phones — HTC HD mini, Nexus One, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, and HTC HD2 — to pile on top of Apple’s latest toy, just to kill the Sunday afternoon. No magical and revolutionary devices were harmed in the making of this article.

[Thanks for the toys, Chris and Andy]

Well, here’s a bit of an extra special KIRF to start the week on the right note. Not only one of the first Nexus One clones we’ve seen (HTC Desire aside), but a Nexus One clone running some sort of reasonably faithful imitation of iPhone OS (or the iPhone OS home screen, at least). Of course, considering the 550 yuan price tag (or about $80), you likely won’t find a Snapdragon at the heart of this one, and you’ll have to make do with a slightly smaller 3.2-inch screen compared to the real deal, along with an actual trackball instead of an optical trackpad. Not much more than that go on at the moment, unfortunately, but there are more blurry pictures where this one came from at the link below.
