OnStar’s Family Link tracking package launching in mid-April (updated: hands-on)

Image
Looks like OnStar’s finally ready to go live with the Family Link program it was talking up last summer. The service, which lets family members track vehicles for the low, low price of $3.99 (on top of an existing OnStar package), is set to begin a phased rollout next month. Family Link revolves around two primary, similarly named features: Vehicle Locate and Vehicle Location Alert. The first lets concerned relatives view the vehicle’s location on a map and the second sends an alert at a chosen interval, letting the vehicle’s location be known via text or email. The initial roll out will be open to select subscribers in April, with more invitations hitting in June and a more complete rollout later in the year.

We went hands-on with the service at an OnStar demo in New York City, tracking vehicles in both New Jersey and Detroit. Family Link was able to locate a connected truck in Detroit in a mere five seconds, zeroing in on the vehicle’s precise location at OnStar HQ in Michigan (note: we had tracked another vehicle in New Jersey a few minutes before — that time with a roughly 20 second delay). It’s not designed for constant tracking — you won’t see the car icon moving down the map as you drive — but it appears to be an excellent solution for keeping tabs on your kids as they drive OnStar-equipped vehicles. We also took a look at those handy text vehicle location alerts, that OnStar will push directly to any mobile device or email address at user-selected intervals. Jump past the break to see our hands-on with both Family Link components.

Zach Honig contributed to this report.

CNBC: Quad-core iPad 3 with LTE to be unveiled in New York (update: not New York)

The above tweet from CNBC says it all, really. Apparently sources close to the news network have revealed that the iPad 3 will be unveiled in New York rather than the traditional West Coast unveiling of previous products. It’s interesting to note that the recent Mountain Lion briefings and Education event were both based in the Big Apple, lending some weight to the claim. Although company expert Jim Dalrymple has already rebutted the broadcaster’s claim about the location. The rest? Well, it certainly tallies with the most recent crop of rumors, but when it’s Apple-silly season we won’t believe anything until we see it.

Update: Here it comes. The official invitations have been sent out by the company to an event in San Francisco on March 7th.

Google+ update will add new Hangout features, give first dibs to famous people

The Big G has detailed a few changes that are en route in forthcoming updates to both the Google+ desktop interface, the Android app and — with an undisclosed lag — the iOS app. You and your inner circle will soon be able to attach Hangout invitations to specific posts, so you can “upgrade the conversation from long-form to live” with a single click. The Hangouts On Air self-broadcasting feature is still in development and only available to selected celebs, but Google is about to roll it out to “hundreds more” public figures and users with large followings, while also adding features that will eventually appeal to normal people’s vanity too: including the ability to upload full-length and private recordings of your supposedly charismatic rants to your YouTube account. See the source link for more.

Heads of Google, eBay, Facebook and Twitter will advise G8 summit on how to search, sell, poke and RT

So what if Barack Obama managed to bring the vast majority of US tech leaders in for a private meeting recently? Nicolas Sarkozy can do it too! The French président and soon-to-be host of the next G8 gathering is said to be preparing some rather handsome invitations to Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Schmidt and a few other big timers from the internet in order to discuss the world wide web’s future direction. The input from these web sages is to be filtered down into a volume of extremely precious wisdom, which is to then be conveyed to the multinational meeting taking place in Deauville near the end of May. Sarkozy just needs to make sure the other seven participating nations don’t object before sending out the official invites. We have a pretty good idea of what Eric Schmidt thinks our future will involve, but Zuckerberg and the others? That’ll be interesting to hear.

Hi-Rez Studios acquires Tribes franchise, turning it into an MMO

Haven’t you always wondered about what kind of rich, storied cultures surrounded the vertically-centric gunfights of the Tribes series? Like, what’s the historical significance of all those jet packs, you know? These pressing questions may soon find an answer — developer Hi-Rez Studios has acquired the rights to the Tribes franchise, and is using those newfound rights to make a PvP-focused action-MMO titled Tribes Universe.

A post on the forums for Hi-Rez’ other flagship title, Global Agenda, revealed a few scarce details for the new project, the most intriguing of which being, “a significant rewrite to the Unreal Engine servers to allow for 100+ players to be fighting in the same map.” An alpha testing phase for the game is currently set for early 2011, and players who have reached the Global Agenda level cap will be given priority for invitations. Here we’d hoped we’d have priority for invitations, because we own an actual jet pack. It’s true! We made it ourselves.

Apple’s MobileMe iDisk App updated for iPad, redesigned Calendar goes beta

Too lazy to cancel your $99 MobileMe automatic subscription renewal and make the jump to one of the many free alternatives? Don’t worry, your lethargy has paid off this morning as Apple introduces its new MobileMe iDisk 1.2 app and a beta version of its new MobileMe Calendar. iDisk is pretty much the same app you know and ignore only now it’s optimized for the bigger iPad screen, tweaked to support multitasking, and offers the option to open iDisk documents in compatible apps — like using iBooks for PDFs for example. The faster loading MobileMe Calendar beta (login to MobileMe to request an invite) features redesigned day, week, and month views; calendar sharing amongst friends, family, and predators (if you like); the ability to publish a calendar to a team or group; and event invitations to anyone holding an email address (me.com or not) with RSVP support and automatic change notifications. Best of all, the Calendar beta uses the CalDAV standard, you know, just like that free Calendar from the company that rhymes with frugal.

Voddler video-on-demand service free to the people (of Sweden)

Voddler, the year old video-on-demand service that’s wowing them in Western Europe (much like Sandra Kim did when she won Eurovision for Belgium in 1986) has just announced that as of today it is offering open enrollment to users in Sweden. The company is already boasting over 600,000 registered users (up until now, invitations were required), contracts with five of America’s major movie studios, and Scandinavia’s biggest assortment of free movies and TV shows. Sadly, if you’re a displaced Norwegian living in the states, this will all do you no good at all: the service is not available in the US of A. We suppose this is all payback for Hulu’s restrictions from international fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Either way, the situation is pretty “wackadoo.” We’ve heard on the street that the service, which features a ten foot interface for living room friendly viewing and utilizes a P2PTV overlay network (similar to Vudu) for streaming should eventually hit the states, although there doesn’t seem to be a timeline on that. PR after the break.

[Thanks, Karl]
