Milestone XT720 spec changes again, this time for the worse
Hey, we admit it, as far as Motorola’s concerned hacks like us probably have no business browsing its Motodev pages, but we can’t help but be a little peeved at the freestyle updates the company is making to its Milestone XT720 spec sheet. The processor hasn’t changed — it’s always been a 720MHz-capable TI OMAP3440 — but its speed rating has fluctuated between 550MHz, 720MHz exactly, and now the most enigmatic value yet: “up to” 720MHz. The RAM too has gone on a rollercoaster journey, jumping from 256MB at first, to a tasty 512MB, and now back down to a lean quarter gig. What’s going on over there, too many webmasters spoiling the spec soup?

iPhone 4 to have 512MB of RAM, double the 3GS and iPad?
Apple has traditionally been — how shall we put it — cagey with revealing memory and CPU specifics of its mobile devices, but MacRumors is today reporting its discovery that the fourth-gen iPhone’s RAM apportionment will be a very healthy 512MB. We’ve heard similar rumblings from reliable sources of our own. What it means is that iPhone 4 users can look forward to not only the same processor (though potentially at a lower speed) as their iPad compatriots, but also double the memory allowance. Of course, this will hardly be the first handset to offer half a gig for the OS to dance inside, but at least Apple’s keeping up with the times. Wouldn’t wanna disappoint all those pre-orderers now, would we?

Seven45 Studios may have a six-string guitar, but your bud’ll be playing air drums (video)
You think you’ll hit these colored pads? Think again, because while Seven45 Studios‘ Power Gig rhythm game has you shredding on the sweetest axe we’ve seen, it doesn’t actually come with drums — you’ll be waving sticks in the air instead, while four colored sensors pick up your motions. That makes your drum kit nice and portable, sure, but removes all physical feedback — and given the history of video game peripherals (look up Sega Activator, please) we kind of wonder what the company’s designers were thinking. Or we did, at least, until we saw the video after the break. Seems they’re just as confused as we are.

Hands-on: Power Gig’s AirStrike Drum
Power Gig’s AirStrike Drum is either a terrific idea with terrible execution … or just a bad idea. Seven45’s drum kit takes a very different approach from the game’s defining pas-faux guitar. In fact, the team has done a complete 180, going as far away from a “realistic” approach as possible.
The name does a good job of explaining how this peripheral works. Instead of hitting a toy-like facsimile of a drum, you are “hitting” air. The Simon-esque drum pad is equipped with sensors that detect when the specially-designed drum sticks are swung above. It’s certainly a novel idea, one that has some immediate benefits: without the need for replica cymbals, this device is incredibly small. For those struggling with plastic instrument clutter, this is a rather clever solution. (Bonus: The AirStrike is also compatible with current Rock Band and Guitar Hero games.) Another perk of the device: it’s quiet. Your roommates won’t be bothered by the loud sounds of plastic tapping.
While the AirStrike offers some improvements over previous drum peripherals, it’s significantly more difficult to use. With a physical object to hit, it’s easy to determine what’s wrong. Here, as I kept on missing a string of notes, I couldn’t help but wonder what was at fault: the game, the drums or me.

AT&T makes sweeping changes to data plans, iPhone tethering coming at OS 4 launch
You might think that AT&T would hold off for a national HSPA+ deployment or a full-on LTE launch before tweaking its data pricing strategy, but not so much — the carrier is coming out swinging today with some significant changes that should benefit the overwhelming majority of its smartphone users (and could stand to harm a select few). Let’s break down the major points:
DataPlus / DataPro
- The existing $30 fair-use “unlimited” smartphone data plan is being replaced by two new options: $15 per month for 200MB and $25 for 2GB (called “DataPlus” and “DataPro,” respectively). Customers currently on the $30 plan are welcome to stay on it, but they can switch at any time without extending their contract.
- AT&T’s new overage system is arguably the game changer: on the $15 plan, you’ll pay $15 for each additional 200MB, but on the $25 plan, you’ll pay $10 for each additional GB. It’s simple and straightforward — but most importantly, it won’t bankrupt you if you go over by a gig or three in a month. This compares to $50 per gigabyte of overage on AT&T’s 5GB DataConnect plan for laptops.
- The carrier’s going to be very flexible about changing between the DataPlus and DataPro plans — if you’re on DataPlus, for example, and you discover that you’re blowing past your allotment, you can choose either to start DataPro the following billing cycle, pro-rate it, or apply the higher plan retroactively to the beginning of your current billing cycle. That’s pretty wild.
Tethering
- Tethering will be offered as an add-on to the DataPro plan for an additional $20 per month, which means you’ll pay a total of $45 a month for 2GB of data shared between your phone and your tethered devices. If you’re light on the usage, it’s a sweet deal — but if you scale it up and you’re using the data almost exclusively on your laptop, it compares unfavorably to the traditional DataConnect plan: $60 versus $75 for 5GB (and in the unlikely even you’ve got a webOS device on Verizon, it compares even less favorably). If you’re striking a balance of data use between a smartphone and tethered gear, AT&T’s new setup is still pretty solid considering that you would’ve been paying $60 for the USB stick plus $30 for smartphone data before.
- Yes, it’s finally happening: AT&T’s iPhones will get access to the tethering option, too.
iPad
- iPad users are also affected by the change. The $30 iPad data plan — lauded for being labeled by AT&T as truly unlimited — goes away to be replaced by the same $25 / 2GB plan that smartphone users will see, though current subscribers to the $30 plan can continue unaffected.
Everything launches on June 7, except for iPhone tethering — it’ll launch when OS 4 does. In the meantime, we’re told users can sign up for the $30 plans both on their phones and iPads if they’d like to be grandfathered in. Follow the break for more details along with AT&T’s full press release.

Erick Tseng leaves Google and Android… for Facebook
Looks like Google’s Android team is being shaken up a little: senior product manager Erick Tseng just announced on Twitter that he’s leaving for a new position at Facebook. You might remember Erick from his appearance on The Engadget Show and a brief video we did with him at CES — he was an instrumental part of the Android team, and a pretty great interview to boot. We’ll see how Google decides to fill his shoes, but for now let’s wish Erick luck with the new gig — we’re sure he’s got a million new friend requests coming his way.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3s slims down, retains its old specs sheet
What’s this? A Lenovo product that hasn’t been leaked before its official announcement? Truth is that’s the biggest surprise we’ve got for you here, considering the updates to this S10-3s are fairly minimal — but hey, if you’ve always thought previous Lenovo netbooks were too plus-size, we guess there’s reason to get excited. While the S10-3 that was introduced at CES is an inch thick, the S10-3s seems to have been on that P90X routine that’s making the rounds, as it measures just .6-inches thick and tips the scales at 2.4 pounds. Internally there’s been little renovation — it will be available with Intel’s Atom N450 / N470 processors, a gig of RAM and your choice of 160/250/320GB hard drives. Those impressive measurements, a $379 starting price and a downright luscious chiclet keyboard could really put Lenovo ahead of the other Pine Trailers, but we’ll hold final judgment until it’s available in mid-April and we see it for ourselves. HTC Incredible out in the wild once more, Verizon color scheme alive and well
Android Forums is alight today with fresh HTC Incredible chatter — a phone every Android fan on Verizon is desperately waiting for — and we’ve managed to glean a few more pictures and possible specs out of the mess. It looks like we can expect a half gig of RAM with about 320MB available (roughly the same as what you find on the Nexus One) and an 8 megapixel cam, but interestingly, the phone’s Snapdragon core is apparently underclocked to 768MHz, almost certainly a battery-saving measure on HTC’s part; fortunately, the Sense-powered Android 2.1 firmware is still said to be “blazing fast.” It measures 117.5 x 58.5 x 11.9mm — just a hair narrower, shorter, and thicker than its Nexus One doppelganger, small enough of a difference so that we think it’ll be virtually indistinguishable in person. As shots go, we’re seeing now that HTC has moved from the brightly-colored glossy shell to a soft-touch black one while keeping the strange contours; we think there’s at least a chance that this is final ID, too, since the Verizon logo is silkscreened at the bottom. Inside, the entire thing (including the battery itself) is a shockingly loud shade of red, mirroring an odd design trend first seen on the HD mini. We definitely dig it. If the stats over on the forum hold up, the Incredible’s on track for a launch in April or May, so it’s still a few weeks off — in the meanwhile, we encourage you to check out more of the new shots after the break.

Seven45 Studios ups the ante for music games, intros fully functional six string controller
We’ve seen “real” guitars made to “work” with existing music-band titles, and we’ve even seen MIDI guitars play nice with Rock Band, but we’ve yet to see a company design a game from the ground-up to work with a legitimate six string. Until now. Here at GDC, Seven45 Studios is making a name for itself by introducing Power Gig: Rise of the SixString (for PS3 and Xbox 360) along with a bona fide axe. The newfangled company is a sister firm to First Act — the same guys who made that guitar sold with your ‘07 Jetta — and the instrument debuting here at the show uses proprietary technology “that can distinguish and recognize gamers’ input all along the guitar.” Better still, the instrument includes all of the innards necessary to make noise through an amp, so you could theoretically use this to rock out in real life as well. If you’re skeptical about the game’s ability to actually recognize complicated inputs, get a load of this: “Power Gig also introduces the option to switch on chording, or chord play; chording presents the added challenge of playing the game using chords that require specific finger placement on the strings.” The tandem is slated to go on sale this fall for an undisclosed amount, and we’ll be snagging some hands-on time with the game and guitar here in just a few hours — stay tuned!

For all your digital guitar playing cheat sheet needs, there’s i-Tab
Admit it, you’re not really working remotely from home on a Friday. We know, you’re sitting at home with your six strings of seduction jamming out to Ryan Adams albums. Well, just in case you need to clear some of that monitor space for actual work — or a memory jolt during that gig you booked at the local cabana — i-Tab’s got you covered with what it’s calling “the world’s first electronic songbook.” The 5-inch touchscreen clips to your guitar’s headstock and serves as a reference guide for your cover song needs. It’s got a built-in speaker, headphone jack, stylus, USB port, TV out for pseudo-karaoke stylings, and 4GB storage. Thirty songs are available from the get go, with more tabs (and audio backing tracks) available via its online store. Just the thing you need to kick up the jams? Word on the street it’s coming in April for $199.

Meizu CEO teases M9 specs, vaporware threat level: orange
Meizu’s irrepressible CEO J. Wong is up to his teasing ways again with more details on the M8’s successor, the aptly-named M9 — and actually, there’s nothing about the list that doesn’t sound doable for a 2010 release (famous last words, we know). Specifically, the dude’s saying that we can expect a 1GHz Cortex A8-based Samsung S5PC110 core, half a gig of RAM and ROM, a 5 megapixel cam, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, TV-out, microSD expansion, and a 3.6-inch screen clocking in at 720 x 480 resolution. Interestingly, he’s holding the line on committing to deliver WCDMA, CDMA, and TD-SCDMA versions simultaneously — theoretically good enough to deliver 3G on China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile, respectively — with a price in the range of 2,500 yuan (about $366). Possible? Yes — but with as checkered a past as the good ol’ M8 has, we’ll believe this one when it’s in our hands and not a moment sooner.

AT&T’s new DataConnect Pass plans serve up data a la carte
AT&T is following Verizon’s lead today with the introduction of new prepaid broadband plans targeted directly at netbook and laptop users who find themselves out of WiFi range (and in desperate need of email) every once in a while. The so-called DataConnect Pass plans exactly mirror Verizon’s pricing, which means you can get 75MB as a “day pass” for $15, 250MB as a weekly deal for $30, or a half gig per month for $50. Like Verizon, you’re far better off getting the 5GB postpaid plan if you’re a heavy user here — but if you find yourself needing wireless once in a blue moon, this may very well be the way to go. Airis Praxis Slim Air is one-inch thick, KIRFtastic
Airis is no stranger to the fine art of imitating without getting sued out of existence, and its latest effort — the shamelessly titled Praxis Slim Air — is no exception. It sports a 12-inch display spanning 1366 x 768 pixels, a gig of memory and a 160GB hard drive, and if you think this is the usual prelude to a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, well, you’d be spot on. To be fair, with two USB ports, WiFi, HDMI, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and a choice of Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Linux, this isn’t a terrible proposition in its own right. The big downfall comes with a rated battery runtime of just three hours, but if you’re unfazed by the tethered life, you can grab one in Europe for €399 ($586) this October.
