iPhone 4 Features: Camera vs iPhone 3GS (Review)

The iPhone 4 camera feature a 5 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom, and an LED flash. This is an upgrade over the iPhone 3GS’s 3 MP camera. The iPhone 4 camera also features a backside illumination sensor, which allows for better shooting in lower lighting situations. The camera also supports 720p video at 30 frames per second, which is an increase of VGA/640×480 at 30 fps on the 3GS. Includes test/demo video and still shots comparing the 3GS. Ricoh’s 10 megapixel, 10x zoom CX4 compact hits Japan next month

Ricoh's 10 megapixel, 10x zoom CX4 compact hits Japan next month

Why, it seems like just yesterday we were talking about the CX3 and now here we are, but a few weeks away from the release of Ricoh’s CX4. The camera is set to hit Japanese retailers on September 3, offering a 10 megapixel backside-illuminated sensor perched behind a 10.7x (28 – 300mm) zoom lens, with a three-inch LCD ’round the back. Ricoh is also talking up an advanced new image stabilization system, five fps burst shooting, 720p video recording, plus all the smile- and scene-detection modes you’d expect out of a modern shooter. MSRP for all this is set at 45,000 Yen in Japan, which equates to about 525 of your American dollars.

Sony’s Ultimate Weapon Gaming headsets are as macho as the name suggests

According to Sony, your Ultimate Weapon when it comes to schooling fools on the FPS battlefield is a 3D surround sound headset. Just like its newly minted DR-GA500 above, what a coincidence! Coming with a separate box to process your computer’s audio into a 7.1-channel surround sound environment, this mic-equipped set of cans is targeted squarely at gamers looking to optimize every last inch of their fragging experience. There’s also a GA-200 model that makes do without the extra audio processing. Both variants share the super special “triple enfolding” padding design, which is intended to make the headgear comfortable for prolonged use. Prices and retail dates aren’t yet available, but just to underline that gaming connection one extra time, Sony will be bundling a free copy of the latest Medal of Honor with these ‘phones starting in mid-October.

Black Ops controllers aren’t stealthy enough to avoid pre-release detection

Another autumn is fast approaching, which to FPS gamers mean only one thing: time to prepare to heed the next Call of Duty. In a repeat of last year’s controller bonanza, Mad Catz is producing a litany of licensed Black Ops peripherals — for the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC — and we’ve now got the first imagery of their appearance. The new gear hasn’t been made official just yet, but what you see here should be a good representation of the final product. Above is the 360 controller, which will share a major new feature with its PS3 brother: precision aiming. It’s a simple lowering of the analog sticks’ sensitivity when you want to do some more precise work and will be toggled by the use of “combat” buttons on the controller’s back. MSRPs are expected to land at just under $50 for the console pads and $100 for a rebadged Cyborg Rat PC mouse and accompanying 2GB USB dog tag. You’ll find a video and more pictures after the break.

Penguin United’s Eagle Eye brings WASD to your PS3 shooters, disrespect to your enemies (video)

Penguin United's Eagle Eye brings WASD to your PS3 shooters, disrespect to your enemies (video)

With the PS3’s plethora of USB ports scattered across the front, you’d think it’d be a no-brainer that all shooters on the console would support keyboard and mouse controls to make the FPS purists happy. Sadly that’s not nearly the case, so it’s up to companies like Penguin United (creators of a fine array of silly Wii peripherals) to fill the void. The Eagle Eye is its attempt, a surprisingly sizable box with an unfortunately short 2-foot USB cable and inputs for mouse and keyboard. Using buttons on that box you assign controller inputs to keys and away you go, hunting the Helgath’s worst in WASD. The cost is a bit steep at $60 when it ships later this month, but nobody said having a (possibly imaginary) unfair advantage over the competition would be cheap.

PSN’s Retro/Grade is progressing, but not coming in 2010

In an interview with PSNStores, 24 Caret Games’ Matt Gilgenbach offered an update on the development of the time-reversing rhythm shmup … thing, Retro/Grade. Most obviously, the PSN release is getting a nice visual boost over what has been shown: “We’ve redone pretty much all the graphics to make the game look really snazzy on your HDTVs,” Gilgenbach said, “especially because Retro/Grade runs at Full HD (1080p) at 60 fps with anti-aliasing.” Power-ups (and power-downs) have also been added, as have “some epic reverse boss fights” that the team isn’t talking about yet.

If you want to try out the odd guitar-controlled PSN game (and there will be a demo!) you’ll have to jump forward in time to next year: “I am confident we will release it sometime in 2011,” Gilgenbach said, “but I can’t really narrow it down too much further.”

Kinect detailed in newly precise tech specs

Sure, you know Kinect, but do you know Kinect? While retailers have backed off publishing $150 pricetags for Kinect in bizarre displays of solidarity, UK shop Play.com has up some new specifics on the technology in its listing for the device. Here are a few of the standouts that were news to us:

  • Field of view is relatively limited, something we could sense when spending time with Kinect at E3. The unit sees 57 degrees of horizontal and 43 degrees of vertical, with a 27 degree physical tilt to keep you in the action.
  • Depth of view is similarly strict, ranging from 4 feet to 11.5 feet.
  • Skeletal tracking is limited to two active players at a time, as we knew, but the system can at least keep its eye on up to six people at once — like that totally optional pair of backup dancers in Dance Central.
  • Resolution, because we know you were wondering, is detailed as well: 320 x 240, 16-bit at 30 fps (we’re guessing this is the depth camera), 640 x 480, 32-bit color at 30 fps (yeah, this is the color one), and 16-bit audio at 16 kHz.

No huge surprises, and we’re sure a few more details will leak out before launch — can’t you just wait to get “off the couch, on your feet and in the fun”?

iPhone OS 4 to include Facebook video uploads?

We already knew that Apple was likely ratcheting up the social networking integration in iOS 4 — that is, if the addition of Linked Contacts and .plist entries referring to Facebook means anything (and it probably does). Adding further flame to the fire, the gang at 9to5Mac.com have dug up a bit of code that appears to handle video exporting to the popular social networking site. As near as we can tell, users will be able to send files at 480 x 480, 30 FPS — and since Facebook is already using HTML5, you won’t have that pesky Steve Jobs / Flash thing to worry about.

Nexus One steps up to 720p HD video thanks to latest hack (video)

Just more evidence that rooting is the only true path of the geek. The indefatigable coders over at xda-developers have just pushed out a download that allows the Nexus One to start shooting video at 720p resolution. You’ll need to have at least CyanogenMod version 5.0.8test3, but once you get your house in order, you’ll be enjoying one of the big touted features of the latest handsets on your five-month old Googlephone. Pretty neat, and what’s even better is that work is already underway to improve audio and the fps rate, as well as making the code compatible with Android Froyo, it all just requires a bit more tinkering. So, hit the source link to get the download or join us after the break for a quick sample video.

How would you change Alienware’s M11x?

Call it the little laptop that could, or just call it Alienware’s most adorable machine ever. Whatever you call it, Alienware’s M11x made all sorts of waves when it splashed down into an essentially empty market segment earlier this year, offering hardcore gamers the opportunity to take their first-person shooters onto cramped buses and coach airline seats with more comfort than ever before. Of course, all that power comes at a price, and while we already expressed our own feelings on the thing, we’re interested in knowing how you feel about seeing triple-digit FPS numbers on an 11-inch display. Is the experience better or worse than you anticipated? Have you ditched your desktop replacement for good? Are you wondering why on Earth you chose this over a netbook? Let us know how you’d overhaul the M11x if you had the chance down in comments below. And make it good.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II 2.0.4 firmware said to fix audio, reputation

Ok, that was fast. We just told you about the audio recording issue with the version 2.0.3 EOS 5D Mark II firmware yesterday and already we have a 2.0.4 release in Japan. Expect this fix of a fix for a fix to go global on the quick and give you that 29.97 FPS and 23.976 FPS 1080p recording you so specifically crave.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II firmware 2.0.3 arrives at last to free us from frame rate hell

It’s been obvious from day one that it was possible, but after a couple of years of oh-so-painful 30 FPS recording on the EOS 5D Mark II, Canon is finally coming through with its long-promised 2.0.3 update that brings 29.97 FPS and 24 FPS (23.976, to be precise) 1080p recording at last. Even the VGA mode has been swapped to a 29.97 actual rate, and PAL mode has a flat 25 FPS and 23.976 FPS as well. Additional tweaks include a manual volume adjustment (as opposed to the automatic gain the cameras usually employ), a brightness or RGB histogram display (this function, like some of these other features, has been available for a while as a hack), shutter and aperture priority modes have been added for movie shooting, and the audio sampling ramp has been bumped from 44.1KHz to 44KHz. The bad news: now you don’t have any excuses for not shooting that heartwrenching mumblecore masterpiece you’ve been telling everyone you’re working on. Hit up the source link for the download instructions.

Unreal Engine 3 up and running on webOS, and we’ve got video!

Palm just showed us the Unreal Engine 3 running on webOS, which apparently took a couple weeks to port over to the platform using that fancy new PDK. It runs at a pretty smooth clip, with just a tiny bit of artifacting in our enemy’s death animation. As an added bit of wow factor, Palm has it currently setup to demonstrate the game at 1 fps when in card view. Like most touchscreen shooters, this doesn’t really solve the problem of simulating dual analog sticks, but it’s still a fun and good looking engine for a mobile device. We’re still unaware of any games that have been built for the mobile engine, which has now been shown for iPhone, Tegra 2, and will be headed to the iPad as well, but we have to assume we’ll be seeing some before too long. Check out the webOS video after the break.

ASUS Cine5 is ‘world’s most compact’ five-channel speaker, doesn’t forget the blue LEDs

Seriously, who told manufacturers that we’re in love with garish LED status lights?ASUS has strapped a glowing orb of unnecessariness around the volume knob of the Cine5 — an otherwise perfectly acceptable and appreciably diminutive PC soundbar. With an array of speaker drivers integrated into that curvy body, ASUS claims the Cine5 produces realistic multidirectional surround sound, but does admit it’s mostly intended for smaller spaces such as study rooms. The announcement also includes a nod to FPS gamers, with claims that the improved positional audio on offer will benefit both gameplay immersion and accuracy when identifying a sound source, though we reckon the biggest boon will still be the elimination of the extra cables and speakers one usually needs to get one’s surround sound on. Price and availability have not yet been made public, but knowing ASUS both should be in the reasonable range of the market.

OnLive Game Service to launch on June 17 in the US for $15 a month

It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like the wait for OnLive is finally coming to an end: the service is now officially slated to launch on June 17 in the 48 contiguous states. The game streaming service will run users $14.95 a month, though buying or renting games is an additional cost (it’s unclear exactly what that cost might be). Luckily there will be lower prices available for multi-month buys, and the first 25,000 people to sign up will get their first three months free. Service includes free instant-play demos, multiplayer and an “instant video-based social network,” whatever that means. At the outset the service will run on Mac and PC as a browser plugin, but the MicroConsole TV adapter will be released later this year, with other devices to be added “over time.” Initially the service will run at 720p, but 1080p / 60 fps will be added once the bandwidth becomes available. Out of the gate there will be somewhere between 12 and 25 titles available, including Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, Assassin’s Creed II, Dragon Age Origins, and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. There are five different data centers set up to serve up the games, strategically placed to reduce lag… let’s hope they work!

Razer and Sixense distribute SDK and FPS shooter utility through Steam

Surely you remember those Sixense motion controls that we caught lounging around at Razer’s CES booth, right? Yeah. Today at the Game Developers Conference, both outfits have teamed up in order to distribute the Ultra-Precise Motion Controller SDK and FPS utility library via Steam, which should give devs the ability to create new games and port existing titles for use with the aforementioned sticks. We’re told that these new tools will require “require virtually no knowledge of the inner workings of the controller,” enabling coders to craft titles that take full advantage of the six degrees of freedom. Will this turn the PC into the next Wii? We kind of doubt it, but at least someone’s looking out for non-console gamers who have a secret obsession with Nintendo’s Wiimote.

Quake 3 ported to Android, shows off Droid’s graphical prowess (video)

You should by now be well aware that there’s no shortage of games one can play on one’s beloved Droid, but just for the FPS old schoolers out there, how’s about a nice Quake 3 port to pass the time with? Yup, the game that defined the term multiplayer before World of Warcraft came around has been enabled on the Android OS, finally finding another mobile home after residing on Nokia handsets for so long. For its short development time, this looks a very well refined translation of the software and offers you customizable controls to go with thoroughly playable frame rates. And if you have an older Android phone, don’t despair — Quake 2 has also been ported over, so once you’ve had an eyeful of the Droid, why not hit the source link to find out how to get in on the action?

[Thanks, Anders]
