Fujitsu announces LifeBook T580 with four-finger multitouch

We haven’t spotted this one at IFA yet, but Fujitsu has taken advantage of the show to announce its new LifeBook T580, which it’s going so far as to call “slate-beating.” That apparently comes from the fact that it’s not only a convertible tablet PC, but one with four-finger multitouch. Unfortunately, that’s done on a 10.1-inch resistive touchscreen (complete with a stylus that can be tucked away), but the rest of the specs aren’t too shabby, and include up to a Core i5 processor, optional 3G and GPS, a promised eight hours of battery life, and plenty of business-minded security measures — all in a three-pound package. No word on pricing just yet, but you can expect this one to roll out in late November. Head on past the break for the complete press release, along with a quick demo of its multitouch capabilities.

Canon’s PowerShot S95 gets reviewed, found to be worthy S90-successor

Canon’s PowerShot S90 managed to attract a considerable fan base with some stellar image quality and professional-level features, but it did have a few drawbacks — most notably a lack of HD video that’s hard to overlook these days. The new and improved PowerShot S95 promises to address that and other complaints, however, and according to PhotographyBlog, it succeeds on most counts. Not only does the camera maintain the same high image quality as its predecessor, but it offers some added flexibility with an improved lens Control Ring, improved image stabilization, a new HDR mode and, last but not least, 720p video recording. Despite those newfound HD capabilities, however, video still seems to be this camera’s main shortcoming, as you’ll have to make do without autofocus or optical zoom during recording. That wasn’t enough to prevent it from getting a 4.5 out of 5 rating from Photography Blog, though — hit up the link below for the site’s full review.

XF105 and XF100: Canon’s smallest professional camcorders yet

Be clear on this, Canon’s XF105 and XF100 camcorders are for professional videographers. Sure, they’re compact enough to temp any new father… just as long as he’s interested in recording his princess’ first steps to hot-swappable Compact Flash cards in either 1080/60i/30p/24p or 720/60p/30p/24p using Canon’s MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps XF codec. Although crowned Canon’s smallest professional camcorders, both manage to feature infrared and stereoscopic 3-D shooting capabilities (using OIS Lens Shift to optically align a pair of XF105 or XF100 shooters), a DIGIC DV III Image Processor, and a Full HD CMOS sensor for native 1920 x 1080 HD video. The two models differ only in support for HD-SDI output: the XF105 has it, the XF100 doesn’t. Look for them at retail sometime in the first quarter of 2011.

Canon develops world’s largest CMOS sensor, shoots 60fps video in moonlight

Did you ever think that you’d see a CMOS sensor measuring 202 x 205 mm? That’s 7.95 x 8.07 inches to our fine imperial friends. Its impressive size — about 40 times larger than Canon’s largest commercial CMOS sensor — translates to staggering light-gathering capabilities, capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional DSLR. Better yet, the sensor is matched by new circuitry allowing for video capture at 60fps in just 0.3 lux of illumination (think full moon on a clear night). Unfortunately, the press release is more concerned with promoting Canon’s engineering prowess than with product launch. Nevertheless, we’re impressed.

Custom Droid X ROMs starting to break loose, eFuse be damned

Despite Motorola’s best intentions to the contrary, the Droid X has been making steady progress toward viable custom ROMs, first with root access, then with a recovery method… and now, at long last, we’re starting to get the first few glimpses at legit cooked firmware. The two options we’re seeing so far are Sapphire — originally designed for the Droid of old — and a so-called “FlyX” ROM from longtime contributor Birdman. In both cases, the benefits of eschewing Motorola’s standard builds are pretty obvious: you get Froyo, root, and a host of apps and capabilities preferred by the superuser crowd like surcharge-free mobile hotspot access. The process is a little involved to get these bad boys installed at this point, but with time, we’re willing to bet it becomes a pretty painless endeavor. Follow the break for a quick video of Sapphire booting into stock Froyo on the X — a tantalizing sight, indeed.

[Thanks, Clift]

RIM averts BlackBerry ban in India… for now

It was facing an August 31st deadline before India banned BlackBerry service in the country, but it looks like RIM has now managed to avoid that scenario — at least for a little while. According to India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, “RIM have made certain proposals for lawful access by law enforcement agencies and these would be operationalized immediately,” and that “the feasibility of the solutions offered would be assessed thereafter.” Details are still a bit light beyond that, but India’s assessment will apparently come after 60 days, and there’s still no guarantee that we won’t end up back at square one at that point. Interestingly, India is also still raising complaints about Gmail and Skype, with it now saying that it wants Google and Skype to set up servers in the country that would give it greater monitoring capabilities.

Nikon Coolpix P7000, D7000 DSLR rumored to be launching September 8th, 15th

We’ve already heard some rumors for both Nikon’s Coolpix P7000 point-and-shoot and its supposed D90-successor, the D7000, but it looks like things are unexpectedly heating up a bit further ahead of Photokina next month. According to Nikon Rumors, the two announcements will supposedly be split up, with the P7000 set to be announced along with some other Coolpixes on September 8th, while the D7000 will be announced on September 15th alongside at least two new lenses and a new Speedlight. As before, the P7000 is still expected to actually drop in resolution to 10-megapixels, and pack some RAW shooting capabilities, 720p video shooting, a 28-200mm equivalent zoom lens, and a 3-inch LCD. Details are still comparatively light on the D7000, but Nikon Rumors has previously suggested that it would boast 100% viewfinder coverage and dual memory card slots.

New ARM architecture (likely Eagle) better suited for OS virtualization

Looks like that fake Pre with the iOS / BlackBerry OS split personality is a little ahead of its time, but ARM — supplier of the architecture that underpins most of the world’s smartphones — likes the idea. In a recent talk at Stanford, ARM program manager David Brash talked up some of the highlights of new “extensions” to the existing ARMv7-A platform, and though he apparently never mentioned Eagle by name, it seems safe to assume that he was referring to the capabilities that Eagle would bring to the table when it launches in the next couple years. Notably, the extensions will break through ARM’s current 4GB RAM limit by mapping 4GB windows of memory to each virtualized operating system, which dovetails nicely — suspiciously nicely, in fact — with VMware’s recent talk of wanting virtualized phones capable of seamlessly switching between multiple platforms without any hacky bootloader solutions. We’re definitely game for that, but considering that Eagle is still years away from retail reality, we’re not bothering to clear space on our credit limit just yet.

App review: 720tube

Apple loves to tout the HD video recording and editing capabilities of its new iPhone 4. Shoot.Edit.Share, says the slogan. Unfortunately, something nasty happens between the shooting and YouTube sharing: compression. Apple squashes your magical 720p memory into a rather glum looking 360p video just as soon as you select “Send to YouTube.” And there’s no easy way around it. That is, until we stumbled upon a little app called 720tube from Drakfyre’s Software.

Olive Telecom’s OlivePad reviewed, we wish we spoke Hindi (video)

Olive Telecom's OlivePad reviewed, we wish we spoke Hindi (video)

Another contender has entered the fray in the great tablet wars of 2010. It’s the $500 Olive Telecom OlivePad, a seven-inch, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreened device. Announced back in July, Indian television show TechGuru snagged one for review a few weeks back where they, predictably, squared it off against an iPad. The Android 2.1 device looks nice enough, but, according to the translation recently provided by Netbooknews, doesn’t compare to Apple’s device in terms of visual appeal. It is, at least, a licensed version of Android, with access to the Market and the standard Google apps, all of which look to run very well on its 600MHz ARM CPU. 512MB of internal memory is paired with 512MB of ROM, naturally with microSD expansion. There is also a three megapixel camera on the back and a SIM slot not only providing wireless data but also enabling phone calls — though we’d advise taking advantage of the device’s Bluetooth capabilities to avoid holding this chubby slate to your head. The full video is available for you after the break, but don’t blame us if you only understand every third or fourth word.

Sigma SD15 DSLR gets reviewed: unique, but not for everybody

Sigma’s certainly managed to get plenty of photographers’ attention with its line of Foveon sensor-equipped digital cameras, but it hasn’t exactly always managed to meet expectations. According to Photography Blog, it looks like that’s also the case for the company’s latest: the SD15. While the camera is described as ‘less of an obvious odd fish than its forebears,” the site says that it’s still best suited for photographers looking for a “challenge,” and that you likely won’t want to have it as your only DSLR. In particularly, Photography Blog found that while images exhibited less of the odd color casts and white balance issues of previous models, they still left quite a bit to be desired, especially at higher ISOs. On the upside, that Foveon sensor does still offer some capabilities that can’t be found elsewhere, and the site says that the camera is unique enough that it can’t bring itself to actively dislike it.

Nikon Coolpix S1100pj projector cam arrives with USB projection and touchscreen telestrator capabilities; S5100 arrives in tow

Looks like those German Coolpix leaks were right on the money — Nikon’s just announced the Coolpix S1100pj and the S5100. The S1100pj is a seriously hot update to the original quirky and lovable Nikon Coolpix S1000pj projector-cam: not only is it thinner and sleeker, but the projector is brighter at 14 lumens and can now beam images off a laptop over USB. The control scheme also looks to have been simplified, with a new three-inch 460,000-dot touchscreen taking over most duties and enabling a wild telestrator-style paint mode which lets you draw right on top of projected images in real-time. Camera-wise, it’s an iterative bump over the previous model: 14 megapixel sensor with 720p movie mode and ISO 6400 sensitivity, 28-140mm 5x optical zoom with five-way stabilizer, and the ability to detect faces, smiles and blinks. Perhaps best of all, MSRP has dropped $100 to $349, which actually makes it a somewhat reasonable consideration if you’re shopping higher-end cams. Yep, we definitely want to play with one — it’ll hit in a bunch of colors next month sometime.

The Coolpix S5100 is a bit less interesting, slotting in between the S6000 and S4000. Nothing too complicated here, just a 12.1 megapixel sensor with ISO 3200 sensitivity and a 720p movie mode, 5x optical zoom with four-way stabilization, and a nifty tripod-detection function that automatically tweaks shutter speed and exposure to produce blur-free images when the camera is handheld. It’ll be $179 in a bunch of colors when it hits in October — check a shot after the break, along with the full PR for both cams.

P.S.- That’s both of the leaked Coolpix models — we’ve got a feeling we’ll be hearing about that D3100 DSLR rather soon as well.

Modu W (a.k.a. T-Phone) scores FCC approval

Modu’s tiny, Android-based T-Phone still hasn’t made much of a public showing outside of a rare in the wild appearance last month, but it has now finally turned up at the FCC, which hopefully means its getting closer to a release. Judging from the manual that the FCC has kindly provided, it looks like the phone is now called the Modu W, but complete specs are otherwise still a bit hard to come by. It is presumably still hanging onto its title of the world’s lightest touchscreen phone, however, and there’s still a curious lack of any mention of 3G capabilities — previous reports have suggested data use would be WiFi-only. Here’s hoping that’s not the case, but it looks like we’re going to have to wait for Modu to get official with this thing to know for sure.

RIM reportedly working with India to avoid BlackBerry ban

There were reports as late as this morning that RIM was remaining “defiant” over the looming (and recurring) BlackBerry ban in India and not willing to cut any “special deals,” but it looks like that may not be the case after all — Reuters is reporting that RIM has assured India that it will provide a “technical solution” sometime next week. That’s presumably similar to the arrangement RIM recently worked out with Saudi Arabia, but India still isn’t making any final decisions just yet, with a government source simply saying that its “technical team will evaluate if it works.” Somewhat curiously, the source also mentioned that India had “concerns” about Gmail and Skype, but didn’t offer any further details.

For its part, RIM has issued a customer update that outlines the four main principles that govern the capabilities it provides to carriers for “lawful access purposes.” Head on past the break for the complete statement.

Chrome to Phone now available in Android Market

Chrome to Phone isn’t a new product — we’ve been using it since May, in fact — but Google’s second mobile announcement today (behind Voice Actions) is that its continuous client app is now “official” and available to all users (with Android 2.2 Froyo) via Android Market. As it was before, websites can be pushed from the Chrome browser to your Android device, with certain apps (Maps, YouTube) taking over for the browser when contextually appropriate. Additionally, the code is open, which we’re hoping means this Chrome extension will find its way to other browsers. The team is “looking into” bringing the capabilities to other mobile OSs (the iPhone was specifically asked), but don’t get your hopes up: nothing’s been submitted, and we didn’t get the feeling it was an active push. Incredibly useful? Yes, yes indeed.

Exclusive: Dell Thunder prototype rumbles into the wild (video)

Did it get hot in here all of a sudden or is it just this extremely sexy prototype we’re looking at? Yes, the Dell Thunder that boomed onto your internet screens back in April is back, and this time we’ve got video of it too. Our tipster reports an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash on the back — which includes 720p video capture capabilities — along with a removable 1,400mAh battery. His prototype’s running vanilla Android 2.1 at present, though the final units can probably be expected to ship with Dell’s custom skin on top. Screen resolution is purportedly 800 x 480, though judging by that 7 x 4 icon grid up there and our tipster’s own experience, it could be even higher; the 4.1-inch display looks to indeed be of the OLED variety, as our earlier leak had indicated. All that and it has the looks of a pocket-sized supercar. Enough teasing, skip past the break for the video.

[Thanks, Fahad]

Infinitec opens pre-orders for ‘infinite’ USB memory drive, touts dual-WiFi

We’re guessing that the past six months have dragged on (or zipped by, depending on viewpoint) for the folks at Infinitec as they waited for this day, but the device we first spotted at the Engadget trailer during CES 2010 is finally up for pre-order. Hailed as the world’s first “infinite USB flash drive,” this ad hoc streaming device enables any two locally networked devices to send content to one another, and as of today, those who have longed for just this thing can get in line. The startup’s also taking this opportunity to gloat about the “dual-WiFi” capabilities included (a video explanation awaits you past the break), which essentially enables an IUM-equipped laptop to connect to another device while retaining its live connection to the web. Hit the source link to part ways with your $129, and if you buy in early, you’ll be gifted with gratis worldwide shipping come August 31st. And you can’t beat that deal with a stick, USB or otherwise.

Samsung unveils WiFi-enabled ST80 camera, swiveling-lens HMX-E10 pocket camcorder

Camera releases are somewhat a by-the-numbers thing with so many different variations being released by numerous companies throughout the year. Samsung’s pair here does have some interesting standout features, but one at a time. The 14.2 megapixel ST80 point-and-shoot boasts WiFi capabilities for email / direct upload of images (DLNA supported, to boot). It’s also got 3x optical zoom, a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, 720p 30fps H.264 video recording, and Sammy’s “Smart Crop” feature for taking angled shots and “straightening them up” (i.e. a banner that is fixed to look straight on). This one’s due out September 2010 for a penny under $250. Then there’s the HMX-E10 pocket camcorder with an impressive 270-degree swiveling lens and 1920 x 1080 30p H.264 HD video recording. That touchscreen you see is a 2.7-inch LCD, the lens has 2x digital zoom, connectivity is HDMI and USB (also used for charging), and release details are September as well, for $199.99. You know the drill: product shots are below, press releases after the break.

Citrix enlists iPhone 4 in its quest for ‘Nirvana phone’ portable desktop client (video)

Critix has been touting its “Nirvana phone” concept — a handheld device that can be paired with a monitor / keyboard for remote desktop use — for quite some time now. Back in February, the minimum hardware specs were nothing to challenging, and as it turns out, Apple’s iPhone 4 pretty much exceeds ‘em by a long shot. And it has VGA out capabilities and Bluetooth keyboard support. So, you can imagine where this is going. The company is back in what looks like the same depressing cubicle space to show off what looks to be a mature demo of the Receiver 4.0 virtual desktop client on an iDevice, pushing 1024 x 768 resolution and some gesture integration as a mouse replacement. There’s definitely some noticeable lag, but hey, you gotta start somewhere. Video after the break.
