Get hands-on with Killzone 3 multiplayer at PAX
Killzone 3’s multiplayer is set for its first public hands-on engagement this week at PAX. There will be 16 multiplayer stations set up at the show for players to compete in 8v8 matches. Sony will also have four pods set up for single-player, with an additional three featuring the game in 3D — there’s nothing quite like a reload animation in 3D.
If you don’t care about standing around in line to touch some plague-infested controller (Purell is your friend), the company will have limited supplies of Killzone swag bags at the booth. Also, there’s mention of some “collectible art cards” at the booth that will have instructions on how to “win” a code for entry into the Killzone 3 beta.

Internet Explorer 9 Beta launching September 15th, might enter a beauty pageant
Once again, the whispers were true. Microsoft has proudly announced on this fine day that September 15th will mark the official launch of the Internet Explorer 9 Beta, but details beyond that are scant. We do know that the Big M will hold a gala in San Francisco to celebrate “The Beauty of the Web,” and once it hits the tubes, you’ll need either Vista or Windows 7 to use it (sorry, XP loyalists). ‘Course, it remains to be seen if IE can catch up to Chrome and Firefox in the technical department, but at least you can start preparing your existing squeeze for somewhat of a letdown next month. Let ‘em down easy, okay?

Social Bicycles bike sharing system powered by iPhone app to hit NYC this fall
Social Bicycles is a bike sharing system with a twist. Using an iPhone app, the system allows users to drop off, locate, and borrow a bike nearly anywhere. The bikes are equipped with a GPS device which is locked to one of the wheels, and when the bike is locked, it’s locatable using the app, so that someone can borrow it; when it’s in use and unlocked, it doesn’t appear in the app. The real upside to Social Bicycles is that the regular infrastructure required for bike lending systems — such as docking stations in a lot of convenient locations — are unnecessary with this system, which can get by with regular old bike racks, making it a much cheaper, fly-by-night option. It’s coming to New York City in very limited beta this fall, and we expect it to outperform Segs in the City in no time. Video is below.

Hauppauge officially announces HD PVR support in Windows Media Center
If you’re thinking about going the Media Center DVR route but can’t or won’t get hooked up with a CableCARD don’t forget there’s another option available to pull in those premium channels now that the $199 Hauppauge HD PVR is supported as a TV recorder in Windows 7. There’s been a few updates since the feature was added in beta back in June, which lets users select programs via the Media Center guide to be captured and encoded in MPEG-4 over the device’s component video inputs (HDTV resolutions up to 1080i and 5.1 surround sound are supported) while the PC controls connected satellite or cable TV set-top boxes with an included IR blaster. There’s still a limit of one tuner per PC and a thread over on TheGreenButton reveals the experience can still be a bit glitchy, but if you’ve just got to have Windows Media Center and NFL Sunday Ticket then some compromises will be necessary.

LG’s Application Store launches in places you don’t live for devices you don’t care about
LG’s official Application Store — not to be confused with an App Store, App World, or App Catalog — just went beta is 23 countries with the aim of serving up 4,000 apps to 33 countries (including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain) by the end of the year. Sorry US netizens, you’re seemingly out of luck for 2010. It launches with significantly less than 4,000 apps today (about 3,000) targeting LG feature and smartphones in countries that you, dear reader, likely don’t care about. Oh, did we tell you that it’s launching without any Android apps? Those won’t arrive until sometime later this year.

Firefox Home for iPhone bows in the App Store
Alright, we know that playing with the Firefox 4 beta has been a full-time job for you Mozilla fanboys and girls out there, but let’s try something fresh on for size, shall we? Firefox Home has finally been whisked into the App Store on news that Apple gave it the green light, meaning you can now sync your bookmarks and open tabs between your desktop and your phone. Some of us can go a few minutes without browsing the web in the off chance we’re away from our PCs… aw, who are we kidding? No we can’t — and neither can you, so you may as well grab it if you’re using Firefox and an iPhone.

Swiftkey beta brings new keyboard, world class predictive text to Android
The software and language engineers at Swiftkey have been toiling on this app for the past two years, and at long last, it’s being made available for precisely nothing to anxious Android users. Hot on the heels of Swype’s own beta, the Swiftkey beta is now available to download directly from the App Market, and once installed (along with language packs of your choice), it can be used in place of your stock Android soft keyboard. We’ve never been the biggest fan of Google’s factory keys, and while we still feel that Swiftkey’s letters are a tad on the skinny side, it’s definitely an improvement. But that’s not where the magic’s at — this software has an uncanny ability to guess what your next word will be, and it actually looks at your prior SMS list (if allowed) in order to “learn” how you converse. In our early tests, we’re pretty darn impressed, and yes, it’s definitely worth the $0.00 price tag. Get your download on right now, or hop past the break for a video demonstration if you still need convincing.
[Thanks, Martino]

Android App Inventor lets you be the developer (video)
Google is following in Nokia’s footsteps today by offering its users a simple-to-use DIY app maker. Employing a design scheme that relies on visual blocks rather than oodles of arcane code, the App Inventor — still in Beta, of course — has functions for “just about anything” you can do with an Android handset, including access to GPS and phone functionality. All that’s really missing is the raw creative talent, which we’re sure you’ll be happy to provide. Hit the source link to get involved or skip past the break for an educational video.

Firefox 1.1 hits Maemo in final form, featuring Add-ons, Save to PDF and more
Two months after an impressive beta, Mozilla’s finalized its first full mobile browser for Maemo — beating iPhone, Android and most assuredly Windows Mobile versions to the punch. Though it doesn’t seem to have gained any new features in the interim, what it does bring to the table is sweet indeed: portrait browsing, auto-updating add-ons and the ability to magically convert webpages to PDF right on your phone. If you have a Nokia N900 or N810, do your device a favor and download it right now; if not, you’ll find a handy guide to your burning jealousy at our more coverage link.

Emblaze’s First Else in danger of becoming a smoldering slab of vaporware?
We have word from an industry insider that the First Else handset running the ALP OS is in trouble. Not a surprise since Emblaze, the company behind the handset, has been dead quiet about Else ever since CES where it promised a March beta and Q2 launch. From what we hear, the software simply isn’t ready and Emblaze has been unable to sign on any major carriers as the components continue to age inside a cellphone first demonstrated in November of 2009.
We’ve also been told that Emblaze has instructed its employees not to speak to the press about First Else. And indeed, when we called the number that formerly belonged to the Emblaze Mobile marketing manager we were greeted with a very casual “hello” without any mention of the company or the person with whom we were speaking. After confirming that we were indeed speaking with Emblaze Mobile, we related the news about First Else and were promptly transfered to the voicemail of Emblaze’s legal representation. Curious don’t you think? Your move Emblaze.

Mozilla bundles WebM support into nightly Firefox builds
Google’s new web video standard seems to be gathering a bit of momentum, as today Firefox is following in the ultrafast steps of Chrome by offering built-in support for WebM video. Bugs are still being worked out, but the fundamentals are there, and we’ll hopefully see all kinks ironed out in time for the release of Firefox 4 Beta, which is expected to land later this month. This is now the third big browser to announce compatibility, with Microsoft already promising it for IE 9, provided users download the necessary VP8 codec first. The HTML5-obsessed Apple hasn’t yet decided which way it’s going with the standard while Opera is presumably busy figuring out how to parody the whole thing in video form.
