Stamp $50 Android tablet prototype raises eyebrows in India and beyond (video)

Stamp (no relation to Terence) is an Android-powered tablet that’s making waves mostly for its price: $50. AllGo Embedded Systems has been leaking information out since April, and while there’s nothing incredible revolutionary here (Android 2.1, MPEG-4 / H.264 Video playback, USB mass storage support, WiFi connectivity, FM radio, NAND or SD-card boot), in light of the much-ballyhooed $35 tablet it’s good to see a comparatively priced platform that you won’t need to be either a student in India (or purchase a million units) to get your hands on. Of course, a lot can happen between now and… whenever the thing is released, but don’t let that get you down. It looks like the age of low-powered Android tablets is coming closer every day. And that can only be a good thing, right? Video after the break.

HTC Paradise and Fiesta flipped on Craiglist, AT&T-bound?

Look familiar? We know, it’s tough to keep this endless barrage of Android gear straight, so let us refresh your memory: this phone, allegedly the HTC Paradise, matches up perfectly with a model PC70110 that we spied in the FCC all the way back in April on its way to AT&T. Sure enough, some lucky dude apparently scooped it up as an “AT&T sample” from an eager seller on Craigslist recently — and considering that the only QWERTY Android device that the carrier’s got right now is the Backflip, we’d be delighted to see it come along any day now. That’s not the only unreleased piece of hardware he managed to score, though: turns out he also got the Fiesta, a phone we haven’t heard about in a full year and could very well have fallen on the scrap heap by now. The picture provided of the Fiesta isn’t that great (check the Source link to see it), but from what we see and the fact that it’s got a 3.2 megapixel camera, our guess is that it’s been supplanted at retail by the Aria. At any rate, good to see AT&T seems to be keeping the heat on Android.

Elonex 710EB color e-reader gets cheeky price bump, available for pre-order

Good golly, not another e-reader! Well, for once the Brits may actually be getting something rather affordable here — we were promised a £99 ($152) price point when Elonex announced its 710EB e-reader back in April. Sadly, this 7-inch 800 x 480 color LCD device never materialized in mid-May, but a quick phone call to Elonex just now revealed a new launch date in early August. Before you cast your doubts, this is also semi-confirmed by the availability date on HMV’s pre-order page — we’re just slightly mystified by the slight price bump to £119.99 ($184). Either way, here’s hoping that we actually see something before the autumn rain keeps us indoor.

Bluetooth 4.0 specification gets official, devices expected by Q4 2010

Outside of Samsung’s Wave, we’re having a hard time thinking of a meaningful device that has shipped with Bluetooth 3.0 onboard. Kind of crazy when you think about it, being that the protocol offered some pretty promising stuff when it went official in April of 2009. Fast forward to today, and it looks as if the Bluetooth SIG is storming forward regardless, as the Bluetooth 4.0 core specification has now been adopted with “low energy technology” as the standout feature. This step means that companies can begin to work towards integration of BT 4.0 in actual end-user products, and if the SIG has its way, the tech will begin to show up in minuscule devices that haven’t been able to take advantage of Bluetooth thus far. In fact, they want this stuff in applications “not even possible or imagined today.” Looks like someone better get those imagination gears turning, ’cause Q4 2010 certainly isn’t an eternity from now.

RED says EPIC camera is back on track, Scarlet to follow before end of 2010

RED may have shown off a working EPIC camera at NAB back in April, but a serious bug has prevented the camera from actually going into production — to the point which RED founder Jim Jannard himself says that they’re not just behind schedule anymore, they are “embarrassingly late.” He now says that the company has managed to nail the bug, however, and that the camera is back on track to head into production… sometime. Jannard also assures us that production of the Scarlet camera (also affected by the bug) will then follow, although that depends on “how fast we can get EPIC production rolling and solid” — he did later add that he expects it to be sometime before the end of the year, though.

HTC quarterly profits improve by a third, beat even its own lofty expectations

We were impressed with HTC back in April when it forecast a record $1.6 billion revenue for itself over the second quarter, but lo and behold, the Taiwanese superphone maker has gone and outdone that with a $1.88 billion income over the period between April and June. Reporting a very solid 33 percent improvement in profits year-on-year — $268 million versus $202 million 12 months ago — the company points to strong sales (no doubt catalyzed by Android’s growing popularity) as the chief culprit for its newly increased tax bill. Guess that shows that having a wide catalog of high-end devices doesn’t preclude raking in the cash, provided they’re all desirable enough to garner mind and market share.

Plastic Logic delays QUE proReader ‘a bit longer,’ cancels pre-orders

Plastic Logic delays QUE proReader 'a bit longer,' cancels pre-orders

Not good news for those looking for a different e-reader. Back in April, Plastic Logic told those who pre-ordered its QUE proReader that they’d have to wait until June 24 — after already having been delayed to April. Now that device is being delayed again, and while the company has wizened up and not actually given a new estimated date this time, it also took the unfortunate and ominous move of canceling all pre-orders. In the e-mail sent to those affected (which is after the break) the company says it has “decided that delaying the device a bit longer will result in a better product for you.” Hopefully it results in a cheaper product, too, as we’re not sure how a $800 reader is going to fare in a world where both the Kindle and nook are available for less than $200.

Google Places’ camera exposed in the convenience store wilds

That right there friends, is a real life Google employee and his trusty camera capturing the internals of a fine New York City bodega. It’s all part of a pilot launched back in April to photograph the insides of businesses for Google Places. The idea here is that by seeing the actual facilities, merchandise, layout, and decor Google can help consumers make a better decision about which businesses might best suit their particular needs. First our WiFi data and now the fetid bowels of our snack shops… oh Google, is there no data left that’s sacred?

AT&T 3G MicroCell now available in all markets

Completing a phased roll-out that kicked off back in April, AT&T has finally gotten around to launching its 3G MicroCell in all of its markets, giving the entire customer base some flexibility when “more bars in more places” doesn’t happen to include your place. Interestingly, the announcement was made in passing during comments by AT&T director Gordon Mansfield at the Femtocells World Summit in London this week, where he spent much of his time trying to quell a minor furor over the carrier’s continued application of data caps when using the MicroCell. He makes some pretty strong arguments: even though all MicroCell voice and data traffic starts off traveling over your own internet connection, it ultimately ends up within AT&T’s core infrastructure — and a legal requirement that the carrier be able to intercept traffic for law enforcement use prevents it from diverting that traffic elsewhere. More importantly, though, if you’re within range of a MicroCell, odds are very good that you’re also within range of a WiFi connection — and since all of AT&T’s data-heavy handsets offer WiFi, the whole complaint is kinda moot. So just get one if you need one and don’t worry about it, okay?

Nokia X5 square slider gets official in Singapore (update: video!)

Well, hey, Nokia just officially launched the X5 in Singapore, apparently as a followup to the Twist and the latest chubby square slider to hit in the past few months after the the Motorola Flipout and Kin One. No, we’re not sure why this form factor is suddenly a Thing either. This guy is actually Nokia’s second X5 –a China-only X5 with a totally different design was announced in April, so that’s nice and confusing. We don’t have an official spec sheet on this new X5 yet, but we’re told it runs Symbian S60, and has a five megapixel camera, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube integration, as well as some sort of shake-based notification feature we don’t really understand. It comes in black, hot pink, bright blue, and, um, unattractive yellow, and it’s pretty thick, if the hands-on photos are to be believed. That’s all we know for now — hit the source links for a bunch more photos, and we’ll let you know if we hear anything else.

[Thanks, Gabriel]

Kindle going nationwide in Target stores on June 6

Still waiting to see a Kindle in the wild before you pull the trigger? Hate shopping online? Need to pick up some toilet paper and a huge barrel of pretzels? You’re in luck, because Amazon’s finally going to be spreading Kindles out in retail nationwide through Target stores. After a trial run in April that got the e-reader into Target’s flagship store and 102 brightly lit retail paradises in south Florida, the $259 e-ink device will be available all over as of June 6th. The press release points out that the Kindle is still Amazon’s bestselling product, and we can’t see a retail push like this hurting its prospects — though with rumors flying about an imminent Kindle update, it might not be the absolute best time to buy. PR is after the break.

Shanzai shocker! VIA processors in $100 Android tablets later this year

Brace for a storm of craptablets: this week, Taiwanese semiconductor firm VIA said its processors will appear in a new slate of cheap Android tablets destined for the US in the second half of this year. Speaking to Bloomberg, VIA marketing head Richard Brown said the company’s Chinese customers will ship around five tablets, that they’ll appear at $100 to $150 price points, and that “the tablet market has been legitimized by Apple” — that last likely in an attempt to make Bloomberg utter the words “VIA” and “iPad” in the same breath. (It worked.) Mind you, the iPad certainly isn’t the be-all, end-all of tablet computing, but we wouldn’t expect to get a legitimate iPad killer for $100, either. We think we said it best in April: you get what you pay for.

Archos 7 Home Tablet up for pre-order on Amazon for $199

The Archos 7 Home Tablet already went up for pre-order overseas last month, but it’s now finally available to order over here as well courtesy of Amazon, with more retailers undoubtedly set to follow soon. While there’s still no word on an exact release date (Archos has only said the “end of April”), the 7-inch tablet can now be ordered for $199.99, which is one of the more inexpensive ways to get a taste of Android without having to sign a contract. Still not sure what you might be getting into? Then be sure to check out our hands-on for a quick overview of the device.

Droid Incredible arrives early for a few lucky, smug pre-orderers

While the new Verizon Droid Incredible isn’t supposed to arrive until April 29th, a few blessed pre-orderers are getting their units early. From the sound of it, there was a glitch in Verizon’s system that was allowing some phone orders to be shipped right away — sadly, that apparently has since been plugged. Interestingly, the boxes these are being shipped in so far just say “HTC Incredible,” not that it’s any surprise that the Droid Incredible moniker was a late-in-game addition. Of course, cries of “fake!” rang out in the forums, so one of the recipients (appropriately self-dubbed “SoSmarmy”) posted a video of the phone booting up for all to see. Check it out after the break. Not seething with envy yet? Perhaps you should re-read our review of the new flagship Android handset.

[Thanks, Aaron]

Nintendo ships Wii Classic Controller Pro to sweaty-palmed Americans

Nothing like coming through on a promise, right? You bet. If you’ll recall, the Big N assured us all back in January that the jumbo-sized Wii Classic Controller Pro would begin shipping to America in April, and sure enough, that’s exactly what it has done. After giving the Japanese a few months head-start, both the white and black accessories are now shipping from none other than Amazon for the tidy sum of $19.99 apiece. And yes, gift wrapping is available for a nominal fee.

Apple names April 30th, 5PM as date and time for 3G iPad retail launch

There was a bit of confusion with Apple’s online store update yesterday as to when the 3G version of its iPad will actually make its retail debut. Let that fog of ignorance be no more, as Cupertino has today named April 30th, a Friday, as the day the WiFi + 3G slate will arrive in stores. In American stores, that is, don’t get all excited if you live outside the 50 states. That’s also the date when early (read: before yesterday) pre-orders will be fulfilled. Deliveries for those were promised for “late April,” though clearly this date has more of the late and less of the April to it.

HTC Droid Incredible shows up on official Verizon preview page — coming April 29th (updated)

Official announcements be damned — Verizon’s just thrown up a “coming soon” preview page for the HTC Incredible. While we didn’t necessarily need any more evidence this guy was real — we’ve read its user’s manual, we’ve spied shots of it in Verizon’s system, and we’ve seen it in the wild enough times to sketch it quickly from memory with our eyes closed — it’s still exciting news to know that the inevitable unleashing of this beast is nearly upon us.

Update: They’ve changed up this page already (as you can see from our updated image) — giving us the date of April 29th. And yes, they’re calling it the Droid Incredible.

[Thanks, Ryan and James]
