Borders’ Kobo-powered eBook Store now live with 1.5 million titles, Android and BlackBerry apps coming soon
Exactly how many eBook stores do we need? Depends. If you own a dedicated e-reader then one is all you get. Own a tablet or smartphone and the world of eBook stores is pretty much yours for the taking through competing apps. Borders looks to be taking a hybrid approach with its $150 Kobo, $120 Aluratek Libre (available July 20th), $170 Sony Touch, and $150 Sony Pocket eReaders and today’s launch of a self-branded eBook store powered by Kobo’s catalog of more than 1.5 million titles — “thousands” of which are free and available in a variety of formats including ePub (primarily) and PDF. Borders also has a few desktop PC and Mac apps ready for download in addition to a few “coming soon” apps for both Android and BlackBerry devices, joining the apps already released for iOS. It just went live so why not hit the source and have a browse.
P.S. Funny enough, there’s not a single mention of Spring Design’s Alex on Border’s new site.

Motorola expects Android 2.2 update to hit Droid ‘in the near future’
Hearing Google say that Android 2.2 would be filtering out to the Nexus One in short order was no huge shock — after all, it’s Google’s first smartphone. But for those who purchased Motorola’s first heavy-hitter since the RAZR, it looks as if they’ll be close behind in enjoying the spoils. According to a Motorola spokesperson quoted at Slashgear (full statement is past the break), the company is expecting the original Droid to get Android 2.2 “in the near future,” though he / she wouldn’t go so far as to provide specifics beyond that. Better still, the same person stated that Motorola is excited about Froyo in general, and it’s “looking forward to integrating it on [the firm's] Android-based devices as [the software] is made available.” We hate to read too deeply into anything, but “devices” sure gets our digits tingling.

Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community ‘in the coming weeks’
Why, thanks Google! Just a day after wrapping up a rather monumental Google I/O event in Northern California, the company’s official show Twitter account has belted out a tidbit that just about every attendee was wondering about. According to the outfit, Android 2.2 (yeah, that’s Froyo for the inexperienced) will be “made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks,” and it’ll be hitting up the HTC-built Nexus One in the “next few weeks.” That’s music to our ears, and if you’re unsure what kind of impact this will have on your own life, feel free to take a deep dive into this right here.

Spring Design Alex starts shipping tomorrow
We’d gripe about the wait, but given all the e-book readers we saw at CES that’ve fallen off the radar or been delayed to oblivion, we’re actually pretty proud of Spring Design for shipping the Alex at last. Orders will start going out tomorrow for the $399 dual screen reader. Not sure it’s worth the price? Well, we’re not positive either. Check out our review for a bit of help deciding.

Hypersonic-PC powers down for the last time
In 1997, Hypersonic joined the likes of Voodoo, AlienWare and Falcon Northwest in the gamble that gamers would buy what were then gut-wrenchingly expensive (think $10,000) custom PCs. Ten years later, it was gobbled up by memory manufacturer OCZ, and soon came to our attention for selling a chic, tiny, but somehow nicely specced 12.1-inch laptop. Today, the company is no more. The Hypersonic website reads that the firm is no longer accepting orders, and Techgage – speaking to OCZ’s chief marketing office Alex Mei — reports that while OCZ will honor all warranties, the company is ceasing marketing and sales support for the Hypersonic brand. Sad, yes, but at least it’s one fewer temptation to lure us extreme gamers into bankruptcy.

Spring Design Alex review
We realize that the e-reader market is about as crowded (not to mention overwhelming) as a Walmart on Black Friday, but ever since the dual-screen Spring Design Alex surfaced and we mistook it as the Barnes & Noble Nook, we’ve been incredibly intrigued by it. Though its 6-inch E-Ink display and 3.5-inch Android LCD form factor may seem like a riff on the Nook, the Alex has quite a few more tricks up its sleeve, including a full Android browser and the ability to extend what appears on the LCD to the E-Ink screen. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the unorthodox extras baked into the $399 Alex. Still, games and gimmicks only get you so far, and you’re probably wondering if it has what it takes to pull up next to the the majors like the Kindle or Nook and knock them from the top. We’ve got that answer and lots more details on what it’s like to use two screens rather than one just after the break in our full review. Join us, won’t you?

Keepin’ it real fake: Teclast’s dual-screened K9 e-reader looks like Alex and Kindle made a baby
We almost hate to throw the KIRF moniker on a product we wouldn’t mind owning, but this e-reader that popped up at the EREXPO in Shenzhen certainly bears more than a passing resemblance to the Spring Design Alex e-reader — and the button layout on the right is a dead ringer for the Kindle. It’s called the K9, the latest reader from Teclast, and it follows a growing trend of Android-powered devices with a color LCD on the bottom and an E-Ink screen on top. The screens measure 3.6- and 6-inches respectively and, while we don’t know anything else about it at this point, we wouldn’t be surprised it inherits its father’s tardiness.

Spring Design Alex finally up for pre-order, Borders eBook store launching in June
Well it’s about time, Spring Design! After missing its February ship date, the company is finally ready for you to whip out the plastic and pre-order its Alex — that dual-screen, Android-based ereader we liked so much at CES. While you can shell out the $399 today, you’ll still have to wait until mid-April for the mailman to drop off the package. We’d like to say the wait stops there, but we’ve also learned that early buyers won’t have access to the promised Borders eBook store until June. When we chatted with Spring Design CEO Priscilla Lu last week she confirmed that Borders will officially launch its store in the “June time frame,” which will be around the very same time that the 3G version of the Alex will be ready to hit the market — at least there’s access to Google Books and an micro-SD card slot for sideloading in the meantime. With so much coming down the pike it may be worth waiting a bit more time for this one, but our own Alex arrived just last night so no matter what it’d behoove you to wait a few days for our review before you hit the source link to pre-order.
Update: Well, this is odd. Even though this news hit the wires today, the shop page on Spring Design’s website is definitely non-functional right now. Instead, you’ll see a message to check back soon. We’ll keep doing just that until we see signs of life… or hear otherwise.

1Cross Tech MIDhybrid is the Android-powered e-reader that looks like a book (video)
It’s debatable whether the act of reading on a Kindle or the like is actually preferable to perusing something bound and printed on paper, but regardless 1Cross Tech’s MIDhybrid helps to bring bring the two experiences closer together. It’s an e-reader with an E-Ink screen on the left and a small LCD plus keypad on the right, with a hinge in the middle that allows it to fold in half either way. It’s Marvell-powered and running Android 1.6 that, much like the tardy Alex, allows you to render content from the LCD over to the E-Ink screen. This could mean browsing PDFs, looking at spreadsheets, or maybe even playing Robo Defense at 1fps (probably not). The device also packs 3G, Bluetooth, and a front-facing webcam, making it sound like a very usable little thing, and while we do have a 15 minute video exploring the thing embedded below, we sadly don’t have a price or release date for you just yet.

Freescale’s new i.MX508 processor could mean cheaper, faster e-readers
E-readers are getting better without a doubt. But cheaper? Not so much. The upcoming Spring Design Alex will sell for $359 — way out of reach for those who cruise the used book store scene. Freescale’s i.MX508 processor might finally make these things more of a smart buy, an 800MHz ARM-based chip that includes, among other things, USB host functionality and dedicated circuitry for controlling E-Ink panels. It’s effectively a system on a chip for the next-generation of would-be Kindle killers and it’ll sell for just $10 at volume, resulting in more advanced readers that could, according to Freescale, retail for $150. That’s the kind of price point that might just make Grandma stop digging through piles of dog-eared Stephen King books and get with the times.

Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 upgrades will be possible, up to OEMs to make them happen
Alright, keep your socks on here, this is as noncommittal a statement as Redmond can make on the matter, but when asked directly about the likelihood and possibility of Windows Mobile 6.5 phones being transitioned to the new hotness that is Windows Phone 7 Series, Microsoft’s Alex Reeve had this to say:
It’s early days yet, and that’s really for our hardware partners to think about.
As the Director of the company’s UK Mobile Business Group, he’s well positioned to know what’s going to happen after said early days, and it’s encouraging to hear that at least Microsoft won’t be putting up any barriers to that HD2 upgrade we’re all dreaming about. After all, the Chassis 1 specs we keep hearing about tend to sound an awful lot like HTC’s 1GHz Snapdragon-powered bad self, so let’s keep our fingers crossed and our minds open.
